Not smoking weed before I use my forearm crutches so I'm not operating machinery under the influence
I know this is a joke post but some places write actual laws around mobility aids, treating them as separate from other pedestrians
like for example a friend of mine was hit by a car in a wheelchair, and the person driving was not charged or even warned because they “technically” didn’t hit a “pedestrian” , they hit their wheelchair (?????)
that friend is ok (thank god) but this just reminded me of how ableism is written into law, so treating mobility aid users (specifically wheelchair or powerchair) like they’re operating machinery isn’t that far off from the reality in car-centric places
this also reminded me that some OTs and ATPs will also deny blind people wheelchairs (usually powerchairs but sometimes manual wheelchairs as well) therefore denying them independent mobility because they believe that using a wheelchair blind is a "safety hazard" because they, theoretically, might run into someone. it's appalling.
