some friends of mine have the most un-cat-ish cat i have ever met

my quintessential example of this:

i was holding him in my arms petting him while we were picking out what games to play that night. when we’d decided on a few, i needed to put the cat down in order to, you know, carry boxes. so i started letting him down, expecting that he’d eventually do the cat hop thing… but he never did.

i ended up lowering him all the way to the floor. and even then he never got his feet under him. i just sort of… plopped him down on his side as he stared up at me like a betrayed sack of flour.

I saw this so clearly in my mind and I’m never going to stop laughing at betrayed sack of flour.

In what world is this not just straight up robbery? And you have to prove your money isn’t connected to a crime? How the fuck is that not blocked by the whole “innocent until proven guilty” part of the fifth amendment?

[ID: A twitter thread by @/equalityalec reading:

A few years ago, when I was at the public defender's office, my very poor clients kept telling me the same story: they would be walking down the street and DC police would stop them, search them at gunpoint, tell them to open their wallets, and take all the cash they had. (2)

The wildest part? The DC police would then send them a letter saying that, if they wanted to challenge the police taking of their cash, they would need to pay either $250 or 10% of the amount taken, whichever was more! (3)

So, if police took $10 or $20 from someone, the person would need to pay $250 to even have the right to challenge the cops in court. If you couldn't pay, the cops kept your money.  (4)

If you challenged them in court, you'd have to prove that your property was *not* somehow connected to a crime. Think about how hard that is. (5)

If you still wanted to challenge the DC police, they'd send a lawyer to litigate an entire civil asset forfeiture case against you, and you aren't entitled to a lawyer if you're poor because the cops call it a civil case not a criminal case. You have to fight them alone. (6)

Sure enough, when I examined the DC records, the cops had taken cash from thousands of people, almost entirely Black people. They'd also taken hundreds of cars from people, mostly older women of color. I couldn't find a single example of a person successfully challenging it. (7) .End ID]

And people still think it's possible to support the police and also support freedom and the constitution.

This happens regularly and they're not at all afraid of consequences. If good cops existed, this would be impossible.

To answer the question: it is absolutely robbery. When people say "cops are a gang" they're not being dramatic, that's literally what they are and how they operate.

"average cat owner spends 3 years in prison" factoid actualy just statistical error. average owner spends 0 years in prison. Miette's mother, who kicked her body like the football and went to jail for One Thousand Years is an outlier adn should not have been counted

I love how every single Georg post observes the original's typo

Couldn't resist a bit of Valentine's fun with the birds at work! This is one of our ambassador red-tailed hawks, Jesse, trying to get at her snack! Jesse is a non-releasable ambassador, not a pet, and she had been at our facility for 25 years this year, so she deserves some love! (She is not very good at enrichment, so sometimes she needs 'help!')

I just LOVE Jesse!

i am not happy with our choices this election. But you should know that the reason he's the first president to "refuse" a cognitive test is because one isn't included in the presidential physical exam in the first place.

There was a petition of doctors who wanted Trump's cognitive function tested during his physical exam, and everybody involved on the republican side said no, and then Trump himself actually insisted he did take one in a fit of ego. He was, as far as i can tell, the first president to ever take one while in office.

At his request for the cognitive testing, Trump's doctor administered the Montreal Cognitive Assessment which is like 5 questions and has not been proven to be an accurate test of much at all. It's a lot like when you hit your head and they ask you the date and your name and stuff -- answering correctly in no way means you don't have a head injury or concussion or whatever, it's just a couple of first step questions. Then Trump said a lot of lies and bullshit about his "cognitive test"

Now republicans and right leaning publications are spreading shit like this. Biden didn't "refuse" a cognitive test, his aides confirmed that, as usual, a cognitive test is not included during the president's doctor visit.

again, i think our choices are shit this election, i don't like how old Biden is, and i think the way our first-past-the-poll voting system automatically results in an extremist two party system fronting candidates that the majority of the country doesn't like is some fucked up bullshit

but our house is on fire and one candidate is a bucket of water that won't help much and the other is a bucket of gasoline, and, y'know, angry as i am about it all i am still going to vote for the bucket of water while we look for other solutions

Don't let them trick you into letting gasoline get thrown on this fire please

At this point I’m not even posting this for politics reasons, I’m posting it because my GOD you gullible bitches need to learn how extremely basic propaganda works. Jesus christ.

October 14, 1977, Anita Bryant is pied for her antigay bigotry at a press conference in Des Moines, IA.

bandit1a

It was 40 years ago today…

Never gets old.

40 years on and it still is gratifying

Anita’s still alive and kicking and being anti-gay. Thom Higgins, who threw the pie when he was 27 – and was poetically from Beaver Dam – passed away 17 years later at 44. Info on his life is here. The pie throwing was a big deal. In an age before the internet let gays feel connected, and long before ACT UP, the pie showed small pockets of gays that we could fight back.

it showed that gays were human beings, who might be in the room with you, that you had been accepting as being equals and treating as people. you didnt suspect them as bieng gay, why should you treat them different after? do they become less human after finding out? i mean, its almost like you just found out they have an oppinion on your bullshit

She was “pied” on TV.  All across the country, people got to see proof that the LGBT community weren’t going to just sit there and take it.  People who thought they had no choice but to stay silent saw a horrible woman get humiliated on live TV.

One of the best moments in television history.

Voting for Democrats is the "leaving the house, getting some exercise, and drinking more water is good for your mental health" of societal change. Everyone keeps telling you to do it, worst of all your mom keeps telling you to do it, and it's not a magical cure-all, but it actually works and rotting in your room shitposting does not help in either scenario.

Also like mental health, voting doesn't solve the whole problem! But if you aren't doing this bare minimum thing, the other tools you have aren't going to work as well as they should either. If you get medicine and continue rotting in your room shitposting, you will probably still be miserable. If you get a union at work but don't vote for politicians who support unions, the union won't be able to advocate for its members as effectively and work will still be miserable.

Voting is maintenance. It's like doing the dishes or cleaning the leaves out of the gutters. You're never going to get to a point where you are Done and Never Have To Do It Again (alas,) because time will continue to pass and you will continue to eat meals and the trees will continue to drop leaves into your gutters and right wingers will continue to submit bad bills to every session of congress.

You'll never be done with maintenance. But if you don't do that maintenance, your situation can and definitely will get Worse

This is the hot coffee case all over again isn’t it

No it isn't. The hot coffee case involved an elderly woman getting 3rd degree burns (where your skin is cooked off of your body) because a McDonalds served coffee at just about boiling, despite having many complaints about burns in the past. Also, the woman suing only asked for medical costs, the jury slapped a huge punitive judgement on top of that.

Yeah that’s what I mean. Like is this case really what’s happening in this headline or a corporate smear campaign

The TL;DR (i read the the thing on classaction.org)

  • Kraft says their single serve cups are ready in 3.5 minutes total. True, it take 3.5 minutes to microwave the cup, but there's more prep time and the instructions call for more ingredients, such as water. There's also the additional time it take to stir in the cheese powder. So in actuality, it could take closer to 5-6 minutes (estimating here).
  • Because Kraft is selling the speed and convenience of the single serve, it's sold at a premium (11 bucks for an 8 pack, excluding tax, which yowza!), which is much higher than similar products that, in reality, would take as much time to prepare as the Velveeta.
  • Like I can't speak for everyone but I see those Velveeta cups at the grocery store and they're more expensive than even the other Kraft single serves, and you just know it's not because of the Velveeta powder.
  • This is a class action lawsuit. The plaintiff isn't getting all 5 million, it'll go to everyone who is *COPD with chronic bronchitis ad voice* entitled to financial compensation.
  • The firm representing the plaintiff specializes in cases like this, which also includes cases such as Frito-Lay lying about not using real lime in their "hint of lime" Tostito chips (so they can charge more), Kellogg lying about how much fruit they (don't) put in their fruit pop-tarts in spite of the advertising (so they can charge more), the use of synthetic vanilla in premium goods claiming to have real vanilla (so they can charge more), and, oh yeah, arsenic in baby food.
  • If you're wondering why this matters, consider that this isn't a MRE. It needs prep, not just in time but in additional ingredients, which would be damned inconvenient at best if, say, you didn't have access to water. This, and the time issue, is, in a very real sense, false advertising. It stands to reason that Kraft made a decent profit off this false advertising.
  • In a similar vein (see: "hint of lime" chips not having lime but a vaguely defined "natural flavoring"), it's about truth in the advertised product, and that the company knew it was lying to its customers. Like if Special K isn't putting real blueberries in its cereal (just pineapple and blue dye), but advertising the cereal as having those blueberries, what happens if a kid allergic to pineapple, or allergic to the dye used, eats the cereal and has a reaction? What if there's no water to make the damn macaroni and cheese?
  • Cases like this give the more serious cases (ARSENIC. BABY FOOD.) more of a legal foothold.
  • You can't really say "burn corporations to the ground" or "lol kill jeff bezos" and in that same breath call the plaintiff a stupid Karen or whatever for calling out the obvious bullshit Kraft is pulling here. Those single serve cups are freaking expensive for what you get and are sold at a markup because they promise a convenience that they don't actually deliver on.

Even without some of this deeper significance, we should all cheer these things on; we should really sue over each and every dubious claim that any brand makes to push more sales, no matter how small. Sue over every microscopic corner they cut that sacrifices an atom quality to save them one penny in fact. No mercy! These are the people who decide what the poor get to eat; hold them accountable for their every last word!
