Oh I forget that some of y'all are too young to remember when a pretty large subset of people were just totally against seatbelts, especially in conservative and libertarian circles.
A conservative group named Ralph Nader’s “Dangerous At Any Speed” - which highlighted the need for automotive safety features - as “one of the most harmful books of the 20th century” because of that activism around those feature, especially seatbelts.
The Reagan Administration tried to recind a law mandating them.
This shit continued into the 90’s and even later, tbh.

I used to make a joke about how if you put up a sign saying Dangerous Acid Pit! Do Not Swim! a solid percentage of americans would do a double backflip into the pit while screaming profanity at you and giving you the double middle finger
then some people did actually in fact go swimming in a deadly acid pit in Yellowstone, despite all of the warning signs and fences trying to prevent them from doing so, and literally dissolved so fast that rescuers could not even retrieve their bones, and i felt bad enough to stop making the joke
