I’m 45 years old, female and I ship Bethyl. 

I am an adult survivor of seven years of childhood sexual abuse and I do not see pedophilia involved in the Bethyl relationship.  Consenting adults people.  I have a sister who had my niece when she was seventeen.  That was a bad choice, but she quickly became a strong, responsible adult before the baby was born, going to school to become a nurse.  Not all teens are immature.  Some are even emancipated and hold down jobs and apartments on their own.

Within my church there is a wonderful couple that married when HE was 22 and SHE was 42.  That was 20 years ago and they are still happily married and have a 17 year old daughter and a 15 year old son.  Age is just a number when a relationship with consenting adults is involved.  17 year olds join the military and fight for us.  I dare you to look a 17 or 18 year old soldier who has seen combat that they are immature children.

This whole thing about attacking those who ship differently than you *IS* immature.  At the end of the day this is a television show.  It is fiction.  As much as we adore the show, love the characters and read and write fanfic this is still fiction.  What does it matter if someone ships Carol and Daryl or the Governor and Hershel or Buttons and Nelly?  Let those who enjoy their preferred ships enjoy them.  It harms no one.  I am, personally, a Bethyl shipper.  But Caryl shippers don’t offend or threaten me.  Ill defend their right to enjoy what they want. 

If you are attacking someone for their shipping preference… grow up.  You’ll find not everyone will agree with your opinions in life.  It would be boring if they did.  Division in a fandom helps no one.  Least of all the show you all enjoy.  If you don’t like something, skip it.  Don’t read it and scroll on.  (I do that.with almost anything that involves FOX so–called-news.)

I am 45 and I ship Bethyl. I would hug any Caryl shipper and sit down to watch a great TV show, glad to have found a fellow fan.

I love how the haters like to say that all Bethylers are teenage girls. Bitch, please I’m 34. I ship Bethyl because it’s beautiful to watch two people fall in love for the first time in the damn apocalypse. It’s beautiful to watch someone who grew up in a hopeless situation and deemed himself worthless find the light in his life from someone who once thought she should just give up on life. It’s beautiful to watch him bring out her inner toughness. I also ship them because TPTB troped the crap out of their story and made it impossible not to ship it unless you are willfully trying not to. My husband ships Bethyl and he’s never shipped a single thing in his life.

‘The Walking Dead’: Why Daryl & Beth Hooking Up Would Be Totally Okay.....

In a shocking move for many ‘Walking Dead’ fans, the show decided to stick 40-something grumpy redneck (with a heart of gold) Daryl with the 19-ish eternal optimist Beth after the Prison Incident of 2013; leading to some icky but totally understandable romantic chemistry. Is it uncomfortable? Absolutely. But it’s also a pretty good idea.

Beth (Emily Kinney) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) might not be The Walking Dead‘s most obvious or age-appropriate couple, but I applaud the show for not shying away from exploring their chemistry.

‘Walking Dead”s Daryl & Beth — Why It Isn’t The Very Worst Thing

I feel like I should start this post with a disclaimer, since saying that a 40-ish man should hook up with a 19-year-old isn’t exactly the least controversial viewpoint round these parts — I normallyhate age-inappropriate relationships like this on television. One of my biggest problems with the show Pretty Little Liars is how it romanticizes the relationship between a teen girl and her teacher, essentially telling the young and easily-influenced fans of that show that statutory rape is not only okay, but that the laws against it are unfair and constricting when it comes to lovvveee.

But this is The Walking Dead we’re talking about here, people. And while Beth may look young…ish (actress Emily Kinney is 28 in real life), age — and of course, law and order as we know it — was thrown out the window a long time ago on TWD. Carl (Chandler Riggs) killed his own mother. Beth witnessed the deaths of her mother, her father, her boyfriend, some siblings… you get the point. She’s killed. She’s considered suicide. She’s lost her entire universe, but shown a vast amount of maturity by never losing hope. Heck, she even sings! Daryl could do far, far worse.

But let’s back up for a second, here.The Walking Dead has been experiencing a renaissance of sorts ever since its lead characters scattered; shedding its typical Grimes Gang Vs. Zombie format for some pretty inspired narrow-focus episodes. These episodes have brought ‘B’ characters to the front-and-center; allowing for an increase in characterization and the exploration of some previously nonexistent relationships. And the most interesting of these relationships — mostly due to its unlikely and potentially “controversial” nature — is Daryl and Beth’s.

Should Beth & Daryl Hook Up? Absolutely, it makes sense, No way, you’re gross.

You often hear the idiom “I wouldn’t sleep with you if you were the last man/woman on Earth,” but in Daryl and Beth’s unfortunate universe (well, until this past week), they are living this idiom each and every day. And, surprisingly, they’ve each helped the other grow — Daryl has learned to open up and trust people through Beth, and she has learned to stop feeling sorry for herself and, ultimately, survive.

Plus they’re both extremely good-looking, so it comes as no surprise that some sexual chemistry emerged amidst all of this personal growth and bonding. Did Daryl initially look at Beth as a kid sister of sorts? Sure, but he kind of looks at everyone as a non-essential until they prove themselves otherwise. Beth has become a true source of inspiration and support for Daryl — and she’s really pretty — so he could do far, far worse when it comes to the post-apocalyptic dating scene. And while the thought of them hooking up might be “icky” for longtime fans of the show who are used to seeing a different relationship dynamic, someone who was just tuning in last night for the first time probably looked at them and said, “I’d ship it.”

‘Walking Dead’ — Sex In The Age Of Zombies

Before Daryl and Beth, the only real “icky” relationship issue we had on this show was the Lori/Shane/Rick mess, but that was really only icky because it was so damn soapy, melodramatic, and unpleasant to watch. A hook up between Daryl and Beth, however, would bring up some interesting issues on right and wrong in this upside-down universe. We’ve explored the new state of law and order season after season when it comes to violence, but the show has never tackled the issue of sex in the age of zombies. The rules have changed — if they’re even there at all — and it could potentially be thrilling to watch some characters navigate those treacherous waters.

Unfortunately, the powers-that-be realized that Beth and Daryl might not fly with many fans, so they had her kidnapped right before the good stuff was about to happen. I still have faith, however, that they can pull a Glenn and Maggie and find each other before one or both of them gets eaten by a ferocious tribe of cannibals.

Alright, so here’s my thing and why I’m not buying the bullshit, “Well it doesn’t matter what Nicotero, Gimple, Norman, Emily, and even LC and Sonequa say, because that doesn’t equal canon.” Because I’ve watched this entire war between Bethylers and C@rylers unfold from the jump–the very beginning. And let’s be real, this is what it ultimately boils down to. I was one of the first main Bethylers on here along with bethylforever and a very selective handful of other girls who can attest to this, because they were there for the whole thing too. So newer shippers might not be aware of the entirety of what fans have had to endure from the C@ryl side, and how hypocritical they can be when it comes to “shipping rules”. Whatever the fuck that actually means, considering these “rules” somehow managed to just pop up out of nowhere. Surprise, surprise. When all of this first happened, and even now– what constitutes as canon to C@rylers has been extremely double standardized. Considering one of their prevalent shippers who writes the long metas based on her interpretations of what’s going on between these characters, while simultaneously trying to present them as “facts” and “evidence” as to how everything is going to lead up to canon. This was especially true during/around the time that Beth was first kidnapped and she was writing metas on Beth as well and how Beth “wouldn’t be coming back”. But during that timeline whenever a lot of interviews and articles were coming out, C@rylers were using all of the pro-C@ryl material, and once again, presenting it as evidence that C@ryl would be heading into/already was “canon”, and whenever our tags (and the general twd ones) were being bombarded with these things, Bethylers attempted the same thing by saying, “An article doesn’t mean it’s canon.” And for that, many Bethylers were ridiculed, anonymously hassled day in and day out about saying that. So the double standards have got to stop. There’s a vast difference between practicing what you preach and crossing your fingers at the alter. Because really, what it’s sounding like at this point is that it doesn’t matter what anyone says, not even the Executive Producer, The Showrunner, majority of the cast or even a good chunk of the general viewers think, the only thing that can constitute as evidence, proof or otherwise is only specifically things that cater to the C@ryl ship. Because saying Bethyl isn’t canon over and over, or screeching at us that Beth is dead still doesn’t change the fact that canon things have gone on on-screen as well that constitutes as “canon” ▫ Daryl carrying Beth bridal style through the doorway; canon. ▫ Daryl telling Beth that she’s what changed his mind about good people being left in the world; canon ▫ Daryl watching Beth play piano and sing intently; canon. ▫ Daryl making the decision to try and stay and make a life with Beth at the funeral home even though the rest of Team Family was still out there; canon ▫ Daryl and Beth holding hands and intertwining their fingers; canon ▫ The “serious piggyback”; canon ▫ Daryl nearly shanking that guy for talking about Beth and saying she wouldn’t last long; canon ▫ Daryl being extremely depressed after losing Beth, self harming, isolating himself because of her; canon ▫ Rick saying, “I know you lost something back there.”; canon. ▫ Carol recognizing that before the fall of the Prison, he was like a boy, but after he and Beth escaped together and once he was back, now he’s a man; canon. Among many others, but the point is that you can’t sit there and spout out old interviews from back before Alone had even aired yet, using them as a weapon against a ship if you’re going to say interviews don’t count for that ship. Because essentially what you’re literally saying is, it doesn’t count unless it’s about C@ryl. And it has been that way for a long, long time. All I’m saying is, you can’t discount the fact that in several more interviews, not even articles, but interviews–with people who run the show, see the scripts, all the outtakes, gain the final footage and that the people who literally play these characters have seen Bethyl as a thing and then turn around when you get ones catering to your ship and use those as irrefutable proof/evidence. That’s not how it works. Not to mention trying to say that AMC Official is just mistakes is a bit of a stretch too considering how much and how often Bethylers and cstans alike have been freaking out over those character bios for quite a bit now. Surely they would of fixed it, had it been an error. And not only that, but it’s a bit naive to discount things that the Executive Producer, The Showrunner say in regards to these stories, and all three actors involved who play the characters of these ships say about the characters they play and know. That’s a bit presumptuous and honestly silly. MMB has said that C@ryl was a fanmade ship. Norman said on multiple occasions, especially more recently (Post 4B) that Carol is like Daryl’s sister. Emily said that the way she interpreted it was that Daryl cared about her in a very special way, that they wee kind of together but Beth didn’t know because he never really said it. So when I say “canon”, I’m speaking in terms of what I’ve seen ONSCREEN and what the perceptions of the people who’ve helped create, shape and play these characters have to say about it, and what their takes on what is going on with them, because really, when it comes down to it, TPTB have the ultimate say and as far as Bethyl goes, it’s already a done thing. That’s why I’m saying, even though Beth is dead, they were still saying Daryl was ready for romance and that supposedly never happened (or it did, and it just wasn’t with Carol, so a lot of folks are refusing to acknowledge it.) That’s not to say C@ryl can’t still happen down the road or something, it’s just saying that with what we were shown on screen, what we were told off screen and behind the scenes of it all, yeah, technically in a lot of ways, Bethyl is canon.
