Remnant’s moon is suspiciously convenient...and familiar.

In a world where the creatures of Grimm come out most often at night, we have a constant and consistent source of nighttime light. The moon seems to rise as the sun sets, and presumably sets as the sun rises:

There are no moonless nights (or at least, there are none that we have seen in the entire run of RWBY), and lunar phases exist only because the moon is shattered–the whole moon must have once lit the sky without variation each night, thanks to its even radiance.

What a source of comfort the moon must be, even now, for those who would otherwise be completely defenseless in the pitch black of night!

In this same world, there are magical forces invested in protecting the people from death, destruction, and despair. The convenience of the moon as a nightlight, and the effectiveness it likely has in protecting and comforting the people of Remnant (thereby working twofold to stave off the Grimm), suggest that it is either a manifestation or a product of these same magical forces.

Perhaps this moon is being controlled by, or was created by, one of the figures of legend we have already learned about, or by someone who has inherited their power. After all, we have now seen magic depicted as orbs of light:

And while we know that Dust cannot leave Remnant’s atmosphere, no such restriction has been placed on magic.

But in order to maintain the consistency of the moon’s orbit against the forces that would otherwise cause it to slow and spiral either out or in, and to hold its now-shattered form in formation (seemingly against the normal action of gravity), the moon likely needs to be regularly monitored and controlled–even held together–by this same magic.

In other words, as the moon watches over Remnant, someone has to stay up and watch it. Controlling a shattered orb of magic as it races around Remnant in 24-hour circuits is probably like a second full-time job.

This person must not get a lot of sleep.

I wonder if they drink coffee.

On a related note, I wonder what will happen to the moon if the person controlling it is no longer able to do so…if, for instance, this person happens to be severely injured or killed while protecting a new and somewhat experimental Maiden.

Perhaps the moon will fall, and when it falls, the newly-dark and moonless night will be fully claimed by Grimm.
