As you can see, i’ve almost never post these kinds of thing on my blog, and although 90% of you won’t really care but this is a big deal to us. The Indonesian government is trying to block Tumblr because they think the only things we post here is porn. Now this isn’t the first time they’ve done this, we’ve had Vimeo blocked since a while back, Netflix this month and now they’re trying to take away Tumblr from us.

Please, please, please reblog this and get the word out. I really hope the Tumblr staffs would read this too. No you won’t get 600000 followers from reblogging this, neither will a killer from the 1800s jump out of your closet if you don’t reblog. It’s just a plea for help from a tumblr to another.

We are a part of this big community, we are fandoms bloggers, aesthetic bloggers, random bloggers, social justice bloggers, personal bloggers, literary bloggers just like you.

We need YOUR help to get the words heard of what our government is trying to do.

I hope OP doesn’t mind me taking liberties to add this link to a petition that was made for this exact issue. Please, it doesn’t take much effort to sign and it really doesn’t hurt to spread more awareness of this issue.

this is actually a big deal, a considerable percentage of the indonesian govt is made up of religious fundamentalists who aren’t exactly too keen on lgbtq+ people or bodily autonomy (tw for sexual assault in that link) for anyone who’s not a cishet man

tumblr may be a major online safe space for a lot of women and girls and and lgbtq people in the country, and it is important that they are able to preserve it

as a person whose father is Indonesian and who spent 4 years growing up there, this isn’t sensationalism in the slightest. Indonesia in particular has had issues with religious fundamentalism along with huge amounts of government corruption.

the state of lgbt in general in Indonesia is far far away from the freedom of expression the west affords people. South East Asia in general is not fantastic in terms Governments not condemning LGBT people.

Just so this doesn’t become a slippery slope, please let Indonesians and people who have lived there talk about this issue. There is so much western centrism on this site that people actually think a ‘petition’ is going to work against a Government that has been fundamental and explicit in its hatred against LGBT individuals - Petitions may have ground in America, but this is laughable as governments in SEAsia have no law that forces them to take any petition seriously. There’s probably a reason OP didn’t put the petition in there - it is a lost cause for governments like Indonesia.

While this is clearly fucking awful, it’s also a very classic Western idea that petitions are the be all and end all of Government activism, especially when the Indonesian government is not at all comparable to say, the U.S.

So yes, please spread this and let people know, make it a big enough thing that maybe there’s a news report about it. The Indo Government is more likely to react at looking foolish then they are in terms of listening to people.
