The Legend of Wonder Woman #1: Mythology done right

I’ve talked before about some of the problems with Wonder Woman’s New 52 origin — about how, contrary to what is often argued, the New 52 portrayal of the Amazons is not more mythically accurate compared to what came before, and in any case it’s utterly antithetical to the essence of the Wonder Woman story and character.

Now, with the release of The Legend of Wonder Woman #1, I get to talk about what it can look like when both these things are done right. Renae De Liz and Ray Dillon have created a story that both explicitly draws upon Greek mythology and Amazon legends, and incorporates them in a way that supports Wonder Woman’s long-established origin as a powerful and compassionate heroine from a loving, utopian society of women.

In this post, I’ll talk more in depth about the mythological references in the first issue and how they work to support Diana’s origin story.

Confirmation! Renae De Liz’s upcoming The Legend of Wonder Woman miniseries is outside of n52 continuity!!! AND IT LOOKS AMAZING.

Her Amazons aren’t rapists! Diana has no father! FUCK YES. (I was so worried when this book was announced that we were gonna get a comic about tiny-Zeus-spawn growing up on an island of militant man-hating straw-feminists.)

“Strong, fun, adventurous [and] (most) ages”?? YES PLZ.

WHY YES THAT IS ETTA CANDY IN ALL HER GLORY.

SISTERSSSSS. Penthesilea, Melanippe, Glauce and Antiope were all described as Hippolyta’s sisters in various mythological sources, and I love that De Liz is using that. AND PHILLIPUS IS BACK!!

WHAT. WHAT. Okay, we have to buy ALL THE COMICS and make this successful, because I need young Polly and the Amazons adventures in my life.

The first issue is out in digital form next month, and the first print issue will be published in January.
