Tim pet the dog’s head and watched as he stopped barking. He smiled as the German Shepard sat down at his feet and sighed. He looked up at the woman with a smile.

“I’m sorry about that. My name’s Tim and this is Jethro.”

Tim tapped his fingers on the desk, waiting for something, anything from Gibbs. His green eyes scanned Agent Navabi, she looked a little familiar, but he wasn’t sure from where.

“You should be happy about having an unusual middle name.”

She would have killed to have a name that was a little less unusual when she was in school. Sure, it wasn’t the most unusual, but it was bad enough.

“My middle name is as boring as your normal name. Jessica. Everyone was Jessica in school.”

“You know I purposely hid my middle name. Now Tony won’t stop teasing me. At least you can’t get teased for your middle name.”

He remembered knowing several Jessicas in high school and Sarah was a common name so his sister never had an issue in school.

“I need to take a better look, but this could be the work of a serial killer I’ve been trying to track down for a decade.”

No use beating around the bush after all. Still, she couldn’t help but add,

“And if I had to stay in that office filing papers for another minute, I would have just lit the whole stack on fire.”

Not really, but she certainly felt like that some days.

McGee nodded and put the cap back on. He took off his camera and held it to his side, letting out a sigh.

“So you’re not an Officer. Sorry about that. You’re a detective.”

“Maldonado. Special Agent McGee, yes?”

She didn’t bother to correct him and tell him that she was a police captain. After all, captains were normally supposed to be in their offices filing paperwork, but since this was possibly related to a cold case from her days in the field, she’d decided to come up and take a look.

He shook her hand and looked at the crime scene. He took off the cap and smoother the brown hair underneath, the heat of the day making the sweat on his head stick to his cap.

“So what are you doing behind the crime scene tape, if you don’t mind me asking?”

Not likely. She thought, but didn’t say. Why make things more tense than they already were. “Sorry. It’s protocol.” She told him bluntly. “If you are telling the truth, a simple confirmation from Special Agent Gibbs should clear all of this up.”

Tim snorted and threw his head back in impatience as he let out a sigh. He knew that with the call Gibbs would be down here demanding his release and questioning why the FBI didn’t believe Tim.

Sandra chuckled and shook her head.

“No, I’m not. I think one Tony is enough for anyone.” She motioned to a woman sitting at the back of an ambulance. “I just found her wandering around the woods. She’s injured, but the paramedics say she should be ready for any questions you have.”

“Thank you Officer, uh...”

He realized he hadn’t caught her name before. He looked to the back of the ambulance and nodded, knowing she would probably be questioned by someone more approachable or more versed with people like Ellie or Gibbs.

Her brow rose. Gibbs was his superior? She’d never met the man, the Post Office was isolated for a reason, but she’d heard plenty of stories. She accepted the slip of paper from him and then handed it off to Ressler.

“You can call him. I’ll stay here.” If Gibbs really was going to get angry, she would much rather Ressler take the fall for it than her.

Kens rested her head into his shoulder, closing since it was the two of them only in the room. “You know he went.. to get away from me. It just really makes me wonder if…” she said in a hushed whisper, her eyes glazed over with unshed tears.
