•Adding butter or cheese or salt or whatever to your veggies so that you like them doesn’t change the nutritional content you get from said veggies.

•Additional calories eaten don’t negate the healthy benefits of food. And, stay with me here, low calorie foods are not more morally pure than high calorie foods.

•If making a food more palatable by adding butter (or whatever) is the make-or-break for someone to actually eat the vegetable, then the Brussel sprouts with butter are FUCKING HEALTHIER for you than the Brussel sprouts you don’t eat. A salad with ranch dressing is healthier for you than the dry greens you don’t eat. A sandwich with cheese and mayo is more healthy than the plain sandwich you don’t eat. The strawberry with whipped cream is more healthy than the strawberry you don’t eat.

•We actually don’t have to buy the bullshit that food that makes us happy or tastes good is less healthy.

“nothing you add actually removes the healthy nutrition in the food” applies to everything by the way. Your body will still use all the good protein and things in “junk food,” and the only “junky” thing is that those foods may give you far more sodium or sugar than your body can use if you aren’t balancing them right.

I haven’t forgotten the specific Tumblr dudes who tried to give me shit for saying this in the past and want them to know they’re still extremely fucking stupid, hope that keto diet hasn’t given you guys a deadly liver disease yet!

Me, a grocery store employee that literally watched a guy stuff 10 steaks into a stolen reusable bag at the checkout counter and watched him leave without paying, and without anybody being fired or getting into trouble at all: "You sure?"

I once lost my entire paycheck to Loss Prevention when some clothes were stolen from a shop where I worked. I couldn't pay rent, I was in a huge situation over it, almost lost my fucking apartment / became homeless for a second time. Fuck all of you who think this way.

Friend, I say this as someone who has worked in hellscapes like that - it is 100% illegal for them to dock your pay, and unlike say, being fired for racial discrimination or sexism, you can prove it happened. There is a paper trail. And the wrongful dismissal case for them firing you over demanding your pay back would give you such an incredible case that you could make THOUSANDS through litigation. In my state, I know at least 10 firms that would do that pro bono. I know this shit is hard and employers are trash, but you absolutely DID and DO have recourse. Getting salty at fellow workers for pointing this out to you does not help anyone, including you. It's not "pollyanna entitlement" to tell you you have the right to fight for your wages. It is the store's job to account for and prevent shrinkage. Not the employees.

This will make a simple casein plastic similar to Play-doh that will harden after a day. It’s basically super cheese.

The buttons in the original image are made from galalith, a more refined and stable form of casein plastic. To get galalith, you need to soak your casein in a solution of 5% formaldehyde in water for a very long time- if you’re making a sheet that’s an inch thick, it needs to soak for a year. At that point you have a lovely hardened plastic that you can’t really mold, but you can carve and dye it, and it has all the cool properties listed above.

GOOD NEWS: the homegrown commie internet is in the works! Across the world, people fighting against censorship and for a more democratic internet are building mesh networks (meshnets) of long-range wifi (LoRa)

Since wifi is just a standard for sending data through radio waves, and radio waves can go a pretty long way if you use ‘em right, it’s not that difficult to connect two computers by wifi from across town. Then you just keep adding more computers to the network and you’ve got internet!

Small antennae, like for connecting across the neighborhood, can literally be built out of trash

And a larger, more accurate one can be built pretty cheap too

(You can also reuse an old satellite TV dish, or really anything else that’s roughly parabolic)

There are LoRa meshnets in places like New York, India, and all over Europe: Spain (pictured below), Greece, Austria, Germany, etc

As for sharing fresh mëmês, the network to go to is Scuttlebutt. Unlike most social media, Scuttlebutt posts are stored on your computer and sent directly to your friends’ computers (rather than being stored on the cloud and sent to a central server). It works just fine over traditional internet, but you can also view and interact with it offline, and it has protocols for connecting over any means that two computers can share information - that includes LoRa, as well as hardwired connections, sneakernet (basically mailing a USB stick back and forth), etc

What that means is you always know that your info is just as safe as the network it’s sent on and the computer that receives it - no one even theoretically has the ability to collect and sell it all. And, since it’s all run on your computer, there’s no servers to go down or companies to go out of business that could destroy the whole thing

there’s also the work being done by the DCPT, left-behind Detroiters meshing together their neighborhoods to share overpriced high-speed connections among the community and producing these good good educational documents, especially this rad resource page. building meshnets to share a global uplink is very similar to building meshnets for the purpose of intracommunication and these resources are useful in both cases

The best list of active projects I know of is here, though you should also do a search online if you don’t see one in your area in case they missed it. Sad update everyone, Tama recently passed away… An estimated 3,000 people, including railway officials, attended Tama the cat’s funeral on Sunday, days after she died of heart failure aged 16. [x]

For those who haven’t read articles about it, the local shrine elevated her to a god. She’s now the Eternal Stationmaster and patron god of the station.

Important things to keep in mind!

- never take from ‘mom and pop’ type store. Its likely you’ll actually harm them, whereas taking from a walmart wont effect much.

- never take items that a worker is assigned to monitor (usually super expensive items), theyll be in trouble for it. and its usually a minimum wage worker and usually they lose hours or pay, or they even get fired.

- similar to the above, never take things that are usually locked up for the above reason

- if its a store you know gives their near-expiration products to workers/charity, try to avoid taking the near expiration products.

- if youre taking clothing, avoid leaving hangers. it sounds weird, but itll make it seem like it was more likely an error in the computer than a theft, since the empty hanger sitting there will seem suspicious. 

- also for clothing, try not to take more than one item at once, as it will look suspicious if theres 10 medium shirts missing, and it won’t be written off as just a stocking error. and it will lead to workers being penalized

- basically just always consider ‘will this harm a worker’ and if the answer is yes then dont do it

like i was homeless for a while when i was younger and i tried to follow those guidelines to avoid doing harm to people who were probably not much better off than me while trying to get food for myself.

it’s a thing. I won’t even lie. I watched someone slip a nursing exam book in their bag at the store I worked at. She made eye contact with me and the blood drained from her face. I simply gave her a sympathetic nod and walked away.

I live in a small town and I knew she was a waitress at a hotel my sister works at, and people at that hotel don’t tip well during off season. Nursing exam books are 50+ bucks. Being a med student myself, I didn’t even breathe a word, and when inventory came up later and the book was missing, I suggested it was likely a mislabel, and the manager wrote it off.

Sometimes, thievery is a necessity. Don’t send people to jail over petty things.
