Adam 2
149 in x of animated feature film history Release: Dec. 23rd, 1968 Country: Germany Director: Jan Lenica
Adam 2 is the first feature film by Polish illustrator and animator Jan Lenica, described by Lenica as being “a sort of an intellectual comic strip.” Lenica and a small crew, based in Paris and Munich, created the film for 650,000 marks (approximately $1.4 million) over the span of 3 years.
Adam, the biblical first man, uses a time machine to journey to a variety of different lands, including space, ancient Egypt, revolutionary France, a universe where everything is square, and hell itself.
With only scant dialogue and subtitles, Adam 2 relies on visuals to impart its satirical messages about politics, religion, and the meaning of individuality
“Some call my movies pessimistic parables,” said Lenica, “but I’m not any more pessimistic than most people of our time.”
Adam 2 is available online.

This is another bit of animation practice, in preparation for my 2D animated series called: The Sundial of Shadows, a story inspired by The Legend of Zelda. You can learn more about the project over on my Patreon <3 It’s a hella big project and I’ll need all the help I can get while working on it, so please consider pledging $1 a month to my Patreon. Often I am too shy to ask, but your help would truly make a difference to what I can accomplish outside of commissions and adoptables; which tend to consume most of my time and energy. In exchange for your support, you’ll of course have exclusive access to patron-only content, including WIPs and sneak peeks to do with this project, and everything else I’m working on. We’re still in our infant stage animation-wise, but I have managed to begin the storyboarding for episode 1, which is six pages worth of Link, on my Patreon, waiting to be viewed! I hope you enjoy this little sample of animation, and thank you guys for your patience, encouragement and support! xxx PATREON | DEVIANTART | TWITTER | PICARTO | SOCIETY6

Of Stars and Men
107 in x of animated feature film history Release: Apr. 28th, 1964 Country: USA Director: John Hubley
“Of Stars and Men is a film from the Hubley family of animators, John and Faith Hubley. It is based on the 1959 book of the same name by astronomer Harlow Shapley, who also narrates. Made in the style of a documentary, it tells of humankind’s quest (in the form of a child) to find its place in the universe, through themes such as outer space, physical matter, the meaning of life and the periodic table. It has been cited as an example of an ‘animated documentary’.
When it was finished, the film was first screened during a conference at MIT’s Visual Department. The film’s public premiere was on April 28, 1964 at New York’s Beekman Theater. The critical reception was uniformly positive.
Its genre was a matter of contention among festival curators. At the Venice Film Festival, Of Stars and Men was placed in the live-action feature category, while at the San Francisco Film Festival, it competed in the documentary category and won an award.” (source)
