@plantagenetdynasty-blog / plantagenetdynasty-blog.tumblr.com

Dawn here - INFP-T/INFJ, a Filipino high school student, aspiring writer, bookworm/fangirl, supporter of intersectional feminism, and history lover. Current URL is now in honor of the House of Plantagenet which ruled England from 1154 to 1485. Icon is Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Dido Elizabeth Belle and Sarah Gadon as Lady Elizabeth Murray in the 2013 film "Belle". Sidebar image is the joint portrait of Charles I of England and Henrietta Maria of France, an all-time favorite OTP. Sidebar background is Marie Therese of France, Madame Royale and future Duchess of Angouleme. Header is a painting of Charlotte Corday. Title is the motto of Mary I of England. This blog was formerly dedicated to history, historical and period dramas, and historical fiction, but now it's just a multifandom mess with history-related posts every now and then. Main (but currently inactive) blog is @promptdreamer. Sideblog is @pocinperioddramas. Semi-hiatus ATM. This blog will probably get a full redo or become archived soon. Warning: Not a fully spoiler-free and trigger-free blog. If you want me to tag spoilers and triggers, don't be afraid to let me know. Tracking the tag(s): elizabethxhenry

To quote my bio - “Dawn, she/her. Virgo, INFP-T/INFJ. Filipino, high school student, frustrated writer and aspiring published author, history lover, bookworm and fan involved in multiple fandoms, supporter of intersectional feminism and leftism, advocate for social justice. Introverted and socially anxious.”

So I’m moving blogs now, from @plantagenetdynasty to @joanofkent - which is more of a multi-fandom blog than this blog used to be. I haven’t been active on this blog for a while now, so I understand if people haven’t been keeping up-to-date with me or if they’ve even unfollowed me. As of now, this blog’s status is still semi-active - I might go back here from time to time, but I’ll never be as active as before, and if I decide so, this blog might become archived soon. While there will be memories from this blog that I’ll always treasure and look back on with fondness, I consider it a part of my past and teenage years that was generally cringey and awkward. I enjoyed my time in the history fandom back then, but in hindsight, I’ve realized how much toxicity there was that implicitly affected me. So now I’ve decided to move on for the most part, and l apologize for my past behavior that may have hurt anyone. There was still so much I had to learn and which I’m still learning until now, and it’s enough for me to want a fresh start. So if you still want to follow me, you can do it with my new blog, and thank you :)

Also, I’m more active (though not totally) on the sideblog @pocinperioddramas. If any of my followers from either of those two blogs wish to follow me on my new blog, feel free :)

Does anybody have any suggestions for good Period-Era movies? (preferably ones that are not book to movie adaptations. I like to read books before I see the movie, but if you could give me the version of movie you like best, I’ll take it) So far I’m sure I want to see Marie Antoinette (2006) and The Young Victoria.

So, if what you’re looking for is general historical fiction I’ve got a ton of them to offer but I’ll divide them by era so that you can jump straight to which era you like best. I don’t really do World Wars films so don’t expect to see many of those. If you want period drama tv shows, I’ve got a ton of suggestions outside of just Victoria and Downton Abbey ranging from mini-series to multi-seasonal.

Prehistoric

  • 10,000 BC (2008)
  • Year One (2009) [it’s a comedy with Jack Black but really good]

Antiquity

  • 300 (2007) [I mean, very exaggerated version of the Battle of Thermopylae but, hey, definitely a guilty pleasure]
  • The Secret Under the Rose (2006)
  • The Passion of the Christ (2004) [I know, I know, it’s about Jesus, but it’s only one of the better and more accurate films based on Christ’s life]
  • Imperium: Augustus (2003)
  • The Nativity Story (2006) [also biblical but actually really good]
  • Ben-Hur (1959)
  • Risen (2016) [lol, also a biblical film about Jesus except it’s about his resurrection but in the eyes of the Romans which we don’t usually see]
  • Imperium: Nero (2004)
  • Centurion (2010) [kind of a bloody mess like 300 but it’s cool seeing the Roman invasion of Britain so if you can get past the lackluster storytelling and the bloodshed it’s pretty good]
  • The Eagle (2011)
  • Gladiator (2000) [not the best rep of gladiators in Rome, but not entirely bad]
  • Red Cliff (2008)
  • Decline of an Empire (2012) [or Katherine of Alexandria in some countries]
  • Agora (2009)
  • The Last Legion (2007)
  • Muhammad: The Messenger of God (2015)

Middle Ages

  • Pope Joan (2009)
  • Valhalla Rising (2009)
  • Brave (2012) [it’s a Disney animated film but like, c’mon, it’s cute]
  • Severed Ways (2007)
  • Viking (2016) [it’s a Russian film but you can find it with subtitles or dubbed in English]
  • Lady Godiva of Coventry (1955)
  • The Physician (2013)
  • Destiny (1997)
  • Barbarossa (2009) [or Sword of War in other countries]
  • The Lion in Winter (2003)
  • Kingdom of Heaven (2005) [I recommend looking for the director’s cut which is a lot better than the cinematic release version]
  • Gates to Paradise (1968)
  • Ironclad (2011)
  • Ironclad: Battle for Blood (2014)
  • The Bruce (1996)
  • Black Death (2010)
  • A Knight’s Tale (2001)
  • The Reckoning (2003) [or Morality Play in some countries]
  • The Silence of Joan (2011)
  • Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula (2000)
  • Fetih 1453 (2012) [or The Conquest 1453 in English]

Renaissance

  • A Field in England (2013)
  • Lady Jane (1986)
  • The Conclave (2006)
  • The Crucible (1996)
  • The Red Violin (1998)
  • To Kill a King (2003)
  • Tsar (2009)
  • Alatrise (2006) [one of my favorite Spanish films]
  • El Greco (2007)
  • Apocalypto (2006)
  • Cromwell (1970)
  • Vatel (2000)
  • The Other Conquest (2000)
  • The Libertine (2004)
  • The Other Boleyn Girl (2008) [I’m still kind of iffy about it but it’s not a bad film and I love seeing more about Anne Boleyn’s sister so]

18th Century

  • Belle (2013)
  • Mozart’s Sister (2010)
  • The Duchess (2008) [my mom’s favorite]
  • The Sovereign’s Servant (2007)
  • Bajirao Mastani (2015)
  • King of the Wind (1990)
  • Young Catherine (1991)
  • Mein Name ist Bach (2003) [or My Name is Bach]
  • Horseman (2003)
  • Adesuwa (2012) [or A Waster Lust in Enlgish]
  • The Remains of Nothing (2004)
  • Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
  • A Royal Affair (2012)
  • The Affair of the Necklace (2001)
  • Charlotte Corday (2008)
  • Legendary Warrior Sangolli Rayanna (2012)
  • Sleepy Hollow (1999) [it’s about the headless horseman and also considered a slasher film but it’s good]

19th Century

  • Vanity Fair (2004)
  • The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
  • Bright Star (2009)
  • El Santo de la Espada (1970) [or The Saint of the Sword in English]
  • 12 Years a Slave (2013) [literally, watch this one, just watch it, you’ll cry so much but it’s absolutely fantastic]
  • Gangs of New York (2002) [watch it because of Leonardo DiCaprio]
  • Dances with Wolves (1990)
  • Tommy’s Honour (2016)
  • Burry My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007)
  • El Presidente (2012) [or The President in English]
  • Heneral Luna (2015) [super super good]

20th Century

  • Schindler’s List (1993)

  • The Black Dahlia (2006)
  • A Dangerous Method (2011)
  • Iron Jawed Angels (2004)

Hope you enjoy any you decide to watch! I most likely missed a couple of period films I’ve watched but those are the ones that I remembered and enjoyed most.

Check out my new blog about POC in period and period fantasy dramas!

I’d really appreciate it if you all checked out my blog @pocinperioddramas and if you don’t mind, even giving it a follow.

To quote the blog description, it is “a resource blog focusing on characters played by actors of color (whitewashed roles - as in characters of color played by white actors - are not counted) in period dramas and pseudo-historical fantasy dramas or historical fantasies, especially in Western media (particularly movies and TV series, but characters of color in historical fiction and period fantasy books and other media are also included to a lesser extent). Non-Western media is also counted, though there is definitely a greater focus on media in the Western world.”

So for my followers who are interested in this kind of stuff, please give it a go! :)

I keep seeing tweets like “okay so america is a dystopian novel now wheres the 16 year old girl to save us” and other condescending shit like that and i just….

where are the girls who are saving us you ask?

oh i don’t know, they are at the Oceti Sakowin camp fighting for the right to clean water and treaty rights. They are protecting their land and water against heavily militarized police forces.

They are and have been at many Black Lives Matter protests. Girls have fought against police brutality in black communities. Women, in fact, are among the top leaders of that movement.

They are the muslim girls who continue to fearlessly wear their hijabs in public despite rampant islamophobia.

And there were plenty of teenage girls at the women’s marches across the country.

So while a single Katniss Everdeen figure has yet to emerge, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t exist. Because young women are protesting every day. They are the Katnisses and the Laia of Serras and the Aelins and the Mare Barrows and the Nehemia Ytgers and the Lihn Cinders that you’ve all read about. These girls exist.

Realize that the fallacy of most dystopians, and many books, is that they often presents a single cohesive narrative of revolt and change. And in our huge, wide world, that is not how change works. But the books themselves are not incorrect in assuming that young women will be the arbiters of change. They are spot fucking on.

Thank you for this.

your opinion on what got spinoffs you'd like to see?

ooooooh. i’d love to see the epic aegon’s conquest and how they’d pull that off. i’d love to see torrhen stark battle with himself about giving up the north’s independence. and visenya would be fuckin incredible. and just the poly dynamics of aegon, rhaeneys and visenya could be very interesting to explore. orys and the storm queen!!!!! so much potential.

obv the blackfyre rebellion would be amazing but idk i don’t feel like i neeeeeeed to see that. it would be very game of thrones-esque with the backstabbing and politics and dragons. what i’d like to see is brandon the builder. so all magic and mythology and tradition and greatly different societal values and way of life. going more into the old gods and just how clever he was architecturally.

roberts rebellion i’d love to see. like love love love. i’m too invested in elia, lyanna, ashara, arthur, rhaegar, and all the young versions of the characters we know. but grrm has already said that’s not going to be one of the spin offs so :(

i’d love to see a spinoff of nymeria and dorne. look i just need dorne done right. got fucked it up so bad so they need to redeem themselves. just give me one tv show based in dorne with amazing poc, lgbt, feminist characters.

you: snape had the most tragic death
me, an intellectual: fred weasley had his whole life ahead of him. hedwig was the lost of harry's innocence and childhood, and dobby was a free slave that was murdered by those who thought they were above him. sirius black spent 12 years in prison for a crime he didnt commit, and yet still blamed himself for the deaths of his best friends, and then died after living his time in freedom in a house he hated, barely seeing the one person he loved more than anything in the world. remus and tonks had finally found happiness, and were going to have a child and won't live to see that child grow up. the creevey brothers were underage and shouldnt have been fighting in such a terrible war to begin with but they did anyway. cedric diggory was not meant to be in a war, but he was the bravest of them all, he was kind and good, and he was thrown aside like he was nothing, but spent his last moment standing beside harry potter, ready to face an unknown enemy.
