Episode 126
Pictured: Walt Disney, aged 16, posing for a photograph alongside a Red Cross Ambulance during WWI. With an alteration on his passport application and permission from his mother, Disney successfully joined the Red Cross Ambulance Corps. He learned how to drive and repair ambulances and aspired to become an official driver for the Red Cross. Unfortunately, Disney would not realize this dream. They shipped him out on November 12th, 1918, one day after the world ended, alongside 49 other men to aid in the occupation. While in training, Disney spent his sparse free time drawing sketches on the canteen menu and canvas flaps of the ambulances. You can see one of his custom designs on the ambulance in this picture.
