7: Romantic Kiss

He’s tired of watching her walk away from him, of saying nothing and holding it all back, all because he thinks he doesn’t deserve that second chance he wants so badly. And maybe he doesn’t, but Fenris sit back and do nothing any more. So when she turns from him this time, he reaches out, fingers curling around her wrist to keep her there. He pulls Marian to him, his other hand cradling her waist, his fingers brushing down the seam of her tunic, over her hip as he catches her gaze.

Fenris doesn’t expect her to melt against him, all warmth and perfection, as if she had been made just for him. Fingers slip from her wrist, interlacing with her own and he can’t help but watch as her tongue licks at her lower lip, the smallest hint of pick. That’s what breaks him and in that moment, lips brush, everything else forgotten. The guilt of leaving, the anger at himself for acting the way he did, the sorrow of never seeing her again. All he can think of is Hawke, pressed molded so tightly against him, one hand in his, her other on his shoulder before they trail up the back of his neck, into snow white locks. She tilts her head, lips parting, and it’s just enough to deepen the kiss..

He knows he might just be out of his depth, always had been when it comes to her. For once, it doesn’t bother him.

If it were up to him, Fenris would find another way to get the information needed. But it wasn’t up to him and though he’s loathe to admit it, attending the ball is really the best way to get what they want.

Of course, he would never have gotten in himself. No, that’s due to Hawke’s influence and whatever power she might still hold in Thedas. She is who he waits for now, stood in the foyer of a rather grand building, watching various other couples come through the doors in a steady stream.

He feels ridiculous, and perhaps he looks it too. Formal clothes have never been something he sees as comfortable. Not like heavy armor does.

It's a long while before she spots him, skulking in the corner. Whilst Hawke has never enjoyed parties (especially not in the manner Leandra had once thought she would), Hawke is by no means bad at the socialising aspect. After all, her wit and her tongue have saved her neck on more than one occasion. And so the poor champion had thus been drawn into conversation for the better part of an hour.

It has apparently left her 'plus one' devoid of the comfort of company.

It's little wonder as to why with the scowl he's sporting. A pity and a shame. He's a handsome thing when done up in the latest fashions - a leather doublet here, a clean shirt there, and an honest to Maker haircut. The scowl rather ruins the effect.

As genteel-y as the Champion of Kirkwall can manage, Hawke disentangles herself from some Orleasian noble or another (Astor? Arold?... bugger it.). Her apologies sound hollow even to her own ears, bending and scraping as she totters across the room in shoes that are beginning to hurt.

Admittedly Fenris has found himself a rather... nice corner to brood in. Close to the alcohol. Walking distance to the food. Nice view. Dark. What more could broody-mc-broody want for?

"Maker forbid a gust of wind go by, Fenris - your face would stick like that." The wall is cold against her back, but he's warm and she can she can feel it from two paces away. It's horrifyingly hypnotic. "Have you spoken to anyone at all tonight? Or just frightened the children with your world class glowering?"

"I do like being the center of attention, after all." Hardly dampened by the woman’s words, he was brief in the way he looked at the side of her face. "So. Before we were rudely interrupted, you were going to tell me something?" Bracing an arm against the door to the tavern in question he’d let her in.

"Tell me something I don't know." With a hum she stepped through the door, ducking around his hulking form to make way to the alcohol. Several coppers on the counter got the bar man's attention. "I've heard some rumours drifting up from the docks about illegal Lyrium, being siphoned off from the templar's stash. But several of the people buying have encountered.... lethal side effects.

"I thought you might want to check it out?"

"Snippy, snippy." The remark leaves him with ease while following after the other. Given such, he’d gladly tease right back. Baiting him tended to promote as such. "I can live with aghast, on the other hand. You are having drinks with me. So if there’s anyone who should be more aghast, its me toward you. I could think of a million better choices off the top of my head—granted most aren’t as funny as I am though.Pity."

"Oh yes - you and your absolutely side splitting jokes - you should be the jester to Andraste herself." It was sheer luck that the bar of the hanged man wasn't far. And Marian turned onto it's road with a step that was far too jaunty given her supposed displeasure. "Life would be dull and boring without you."

"You’re right. Feel free to go back and listen to them rant on for a bit while I go find something to drink. I’ll pass."

"No thank you - I think I've had quite enough of listening on to their incessant tawatter do last me a life time." With an awkward roll of their shoulders - muscles stiff beneath their armour, they passed him, grinning. "But that's the oldest trick in the book. I don't know who I'm more aghast at - you for using it, or them for falling for it."

"A friend's loyalty goes a long way, and Varric is one of the closest I have. His discretion does him credit beyond measure, I do hope he won't get into too much trouble over this? Cassandra seemed.... quite incensed."
