I worry that this election is going to be a lot like when Harper got booted out - "anyone BUT", without people really thinking it through or researching things. Don't vote with the mentality of "anyone BUT Trudeau", because that's how we got here - "anyone BUT Harper". And Trudeau was the farthest from.

When we lower our standards so that that anyone who seems marginally better than Conservatives is acceptable, we all lose. This is how the overton window gets shifted more and more to the right.

Centrism enables apathy and status-quo non-solutions to problems that need immediate action.

We can’t keep doing this dance between Liberals and Conservatives and be surprised when barely anything actually changes.

I have like a vague memory of you posting abt the issues with Justin trudeau, if you don't mind could you give like a rundown?

I… am not in a headspace for Serious Writing rn, but a couple quick bullet points:

  • Campaigned on a platform of equality for First Nations and respect for their treaty rights; has yet to see an oil pipe he didn’t immediately want to suck off
  • Campaigned on electoral reform, as many Canadians were unhappy with recent minority-vote majority governments; realized that the existing system favours his party and scrapped the whole thing on flimsy pretexts
  • Shows up to pride parades for photo ops, mysteriously absent when queer people are being murdered and asking for help
  • Has yet to meet a Native person he didn’t pay off or talk over
  • Makes decisions on environmentally devastating projects before impact studies are even done
  • Is trying to increase Canada’s dependence on and extraction of petrochemicals in the opening act of the fucking Apocalypse
  • Did you know Canada has enough oil reserves to push us past the point of no return on its own?

In short, he’s polite, kind imperialist genocide.

I am so scared there’s going to be a split vote. I’m NDP in my heart and soul but I’m nervous that if i, and people like me, vote NDP and liberal-leaning people vote liberal, our vote will be split. And sch**r will win a majority... which is the one thing we (NDP and liberal) shouldn’t want. It’s what happened in ON with premiership. I just don’t know what to do.

If it makes you feel better the situation in Ontario is not currently the situation in Canada federally.

Currently no party is polling near a majority government, where as in Ontario the PC’s were polling consistently at a majority the entire election.

That means that if we get a minority parliament it won’t matter if the NDP only wins 20-40 seats, they could act as the balance of power and force the Liberals/Conservatives to compromise and adopt NDP policies. This is why its so important to give a progressive party like the NDP your votes.

But we’ll see what happens. A lot can change in a campaign, and nobody has to decide how they’ll vote now. I disagree with strategic voting, but its up to you how you vote.

Also to add onto this.

Lets say that the Conservatives are elected.

Wouldn’t you prefer having as many NDP MP’s in parliament as possible to hold them to account?

Do you really think the Ontario Liberals would have held Doug Ford to account as well as the NDP has been if it was they that had won the 2nd more seats?

While the Liberals will condemn the Conservatives on blatant abuses towards social issues, they’re not likely to hold the Conservatives to account to the extent the NDP would on these same issues, and on some issues where the Liberals and Conservatives see eye to high (corporatism, oil pipelines, etc), the Liberals will be useless in opposing the Conservatives because they actually like what they’re doing.

Elections are about more than electing government, they’re about what kind of local representative you want, and they’re about who you want in office to defend your values.

I’m just done caring. I voted strategically in the last election and look where it got us. Even if we loose this election we get better numbers for next time if we just keep voting NDP. They worked for years with little to show for it and then became the official opposition. They never accepted that the liberals are the best we can do and why should we. We need to do something or the world will go to shit, and excepting mediocre leaders isn’t working. We need to try and effect change, all of us. Tbh I hope that you will join me in volunteering if you can but please at least vote for them, we need to build momentum.

Some people in our time have an impression that having a cool and ‘perfect Islamic’ marriage equals taking selfies in some grand mosque in the Muslim world, or going to a halal restaurant 2 times a week and eating Arabic food, or splashing out life savings on jilbabs, matching thobes and hijama sessions, or uploading tutorial videos on makeup and how to tie the Hijab together on Instagram, or going Live on Facebook whilst standing in salah, or going to the Ka'bah and taking cat and dog photos of yourselves whilst making tawaf so you can show the world how much you love each other.

Having a marriage which is Islamic and resembles the way of Rasūlullāh ﷺ is living a relationship solely to please Allāh. It is loving each other unconditionally even if you have nothing and no one. It’s respecting each other enough to be patient with faults and imperfections. It’s about possessing the treasure of ghayra and the self-dignity to keep certain things private. It’s about caring about each other through ups, downs, sun, rain, storms, and rollercoasters. It’s about being loyal in hardship and in ease. And it’s about being real with each other - not living a charade and a fake act just to fit in, to look good on social media, or feel accepted by others.
