Spring Showers

Levi stares when Eren grabs his wrist and his immediate reaction is to take a step back. The action is negated when Eren pulls him forward, proving to Levi that he’s stronger than he’s been letting on. His lips thin into a flat line and he tries to pull his hand back a second time. “What the hell are you trying to get me to say?” Does Eren want him to admit that his skin is smoother than he’s ever felt before? That he didn’t actually mind the warmth it left on his skin, even if he did say Eren was cold to the touch? He meets Eren’s gaze and hope that maybe those admittances won’t be easy to read in his eyes. “Your pants are wet too, Jaeger.”

Eren’s grip doesn’t loosen, but he his gaze does fall only to see that Levi is right. He doesn’t know if Levi’s intention is to distract him from what he’s suddenly realized is a pretty awkward position, though the way Levi is looking at him is more distracting than the damp clothing sticking to him. “What do you think I’m trying to get you to say?” he asks, chancing moving just a little closer to see if Levi would inch back. He chuckles, the sound sheepish and somewhat embarrassed. “I thought it’d be kinda obvious.” Standing, he shakes his head, and shrugs on the shirt Levi had given him. “On second thought, you know what? I actually have some studying to do. Maybe I should go. But thanks for the, uh, shirt. I’ll get it washed before I give it back.”

“Quite literally messing around, because you’re leaving a mess all over the place.” He doesn’t move back when Eren dips for the shirt and his palm remains firm against the bare skin of Eren’s shoulder as he snatches the shirt from his grasp with his free hand. “Besides, my dryer needs a kick every now and again and I’m not gonna have you breaking my appliances over a goddamn shirt that should have been replaced with the one I gave you by now.” His fingers absently trail down Eren’s chest and over his abdomen before he realizes what he’s doing and he jerks his hand back. “Your skin is all chilled from the rain, brat,” he adds as an afterthought. Or maybe it’s an excuse.

Okay, that definitely wasn’t an accident... Eren gulps at the prolonged contact and his brain doesn’t register what’s happening until Levi has already pulled back. Instinctively, he reaches out and grabs the hand that had previously trailed over his own skin, now warmer with the heat that floods through him. “Is that all it is?” he asks, tugging Levi forward a fraction, his eyes trained on Levi’s face.

Levi’s eyes narrow. He doesn’t like the smug grin spreading across Eren’s face, like he knows he’s got the advantage when Levi is certain he’s stronger than Eren and faster. “Give it,” he deadpans, whipping his hand forward. He knows he touched the fabric before Eren pulled it out of reach again. “Jaeger, so help me…” He leans forward, bracing a hand against Eren’s chest as it’s pulled higher and higher before he finally catches the edge of the shirt between his thumb and forefinger. He gives an experimental tug, but, as he expects, Eren isn’t loosening his hold. “Let go,” he demands, trying to at as though he’s not hyper aware of their proximity and Eren’s half nudity.

What would you do for the shirt, Levi?” Eren asks, pulling the shirt away just shy of Levi’s grasp. The action causes Levi to breach the space between them, his palm pressing and fingers brushing across Eren’s bare torso. In his surprise, Eren takes a step back, the rhythm of his heartbeat jumping up a notch. Again, he laughs, debating whether to give in or to see how much more teasing Levi can take before he really does do something as bold as try to take it by force. “You should really learn to lighten up.” He tries to hand the shirt over and accidentally drops it before he dives down after the sopping garment. “I’m just messing around.”

“Total accident my ass.” Levi crosses his arms over his chest and eyes the stain again. It’s just water, he tries to remind himself. The last time Hanji spilled water on his couch she laughed at him for days about his reaction to it. At least Eren isn’t laughing. He might have to knock him out if he did. He drags his eyes away from the couch and tries to focus on the shirt in Eren’s hands. “Just hand it over. I have to do a load of my own laundry anyway. I might as well throw your shirt in there too.” He reaches forward, but the shirt keeps getting further away from him and closer to Eren’s chest and it takes him a second to realize that Eren is probably doing that on purpose. “I said give me the goddamn shirt, Jaeger.”

Eren chuckles and raises a brow. Things are starting to get interesting. “You want the shirt?” he asks, unable to keep the teasing grin from materializing. He presses the shirt against him and tilts his head, wondering how far he can push Levi, if Levi has a fun side he’s been keeping cooped up all this time. “I bet you can’t take it from me.” Taking a step back, he drops his gaze before lifting it up just a fraction like a baiting challenge.

He’s going to have to steam clean the couch, he notes as he pointedly stares at the wet stain that colors the cushion. “You just had to leave a mark, didn’t you, Jaeger?” When Levi pulls his eyes away from the couch he finds a different view of Eren than he’s used to seeing. Eren’s bare upper body is nothing to scoff at. He’s slender, yes, but there’s potential beneath his skin, muscles that are developing into something appealing. Levi is staring before he can stop himself and he clears his throat as he pulls his eyes away to glance down the hall. “Just hand it over.” He’s more than capable of keeping his eyes off a student when they’re standing shirtless in his living room, or so he tells himself.

Wait, did he just...? Eren reels back a fraction as he tries to put together what he thinks he’s just seen. While a part of him thinks he’s probably imagined it because there’s no way, there’s just no way that glance is what it looks like. But Levi seems a little more awkward than he seemed a minute ago and the other part of him, the part that’s been trying to get in Levi’s good graces since the start of the semester, is more than a little amused by the new development. “And here I thought I’d have to take you out to a few more lunches,” he jokes. “I can dry my own shirt, though. I really don’t mind. Let me make it up to you for leaving a mark, which by the way was a total accident.”

Levi ignores Eren as he briskly walks into his room to grab a clean, dry shirt to slip over his head. He tosses the wet on in the hamper and debates for only a second before changing his pants as well. He searches his drawers for a slightly larger shirt and steps back into the living area to find Eren running his fingers over the couch. He’s about to protest when Eren takes a seat. Levi scowls. “Yeah, no mud. But then you decide to sit your sopping wet ass on my couch.” He tosses the shirt in Eren’s direction. “Get up and put that on and give me yours. I’ll throw it in the dryer.”

It takes Eren a total of two seconds to realize why Levi is scowling at him when he comes out of his bedroom. With a yelp of surprise, he jumps up off the couch and catches the shirt mid-air. “Sorry about that,” he says, offering an apologetic grin. He figures he should probably get out of his wet clothes before Levi’s eyebrows permanently meld together, so without giving it much thought, lifts the hem of his shirt up and over his head before handing the garment over. “I can put it in the dryer myself if you’d show me where it is. I feel bad enough having you stuck with me without you going off and doing my laundry, too.”

Of course Eren just has to comment and his laughter follows Levi all the way up to the door of his apartment building. The awning is barely wide enough to cover them both and Levi pulls Eren closer, their bodies nearly pressed against one another, to keep them as dry as possible as he tugs his key out of his pocket to shove it into the door. “We should’ve just headed straight here,” he grumbles as he shoulders the door open, tugging Eren in behind him. “Now we’re soaked.” He grimaces as they reach his apartment and unlocks the door. “Remember what I said about the mud? Look at your damn shoes. They come off at the door,” he demands, kicking his off before stepping inside.

Following Levi’s cue, Eren kicks off his own shoes and pauses before bending down to straighten them up and place them next to where Levi has left his. It’s a different kind of feeling, being in Levi’s house when it isn’t all business, and Eren finds himself running his hand over the back of the couch to dispel the odd excitement churning in his gut. “You worry too much,” he quips before he takes a seat on the couch. “See? No mud.” He sticks his foot out and wiggles it for emphasis.

Levi’s eyes narrow as he turns his gaze skyward. Perhaps he did jinx it. The light rain is harmless, he tells himself. It’s the downpour he’s expecting to follow that will sour his mood. “It’s not gonna stay drizzle, brat.” He scowls and grabs ahold of Eren’s sleeve to tug him forward. “Let’s head to my place before––” Another clap of thunder echoes in the distance and before Levi can finish his sentence the rain really starts coming down, slanting into sheets as Levi grabs Eren’s hand without thinking and jerks him forward into a run. “Dammit, now there really will be mud in my house,” he grumbles, barely audible over the rain hitting the pavement.

Levi is faster than Eren would have given him credit for considering his smaller stature. The slight drizzle has now turned into a full fledged downpour and even the way he holds his jacket over his head doesn’t do much to stop the water from drenching him. “Now I know you’ve really jinxed it!” Eren says with a laugh as he follows behind Levi, too caught up in trying to keep his pace to really let it fully sink in that Levi is now dragging him back to his place. As they near the building, he slows down, slightly out of breath when they finally reach the entrance. “So much for a walk in the park, huh?”
