kaylee had been all too excited for the opportunity to get a good look at a leviathan, and she had, perhaps, forgone certain precautions that people in her line of work ( crime, not mechanics ) ought to follow when visiting a new planet. namely, she had boarded an unfamiliar ship with an unfamiliar crew. in fairness, it wasn’t as if she had wandered blindly after a complete stranger -- they had spoken for a time ( certainly longer than the discussion she’d had with mal that earned her a place on serenity, ) and her own crew had scattered. three days in one place was enough to make most of them stir crazy. just a quick look couldn’t hurt, right?
only ‘a quick look’ had turned into a guided tour, and long before she’d realized how much time she’d spent marveling at the miracle of a living ship, her footing surrendered to moya’s sudden rumbling, and she could do little more than heed john’s warning, pressing herself back into the wall and clinging for dear life. by the time all was calm, kaylee found herself on the floor without remembering exactly how she’d sunk there, and she slowly turned her head to look at john, unwilling to accept the situation in which she found herself.
"that don’t mean... we ain’t moved, right?” she asked, her voice soft and hesitant. in that moment, she wished for a crash, maybe even hoped that the ship had been captured by peacekeepers. anything, if it meant she hadn’t just shot halfway across the gorram universe with a ship full of strangers. “let me off -- i gotta get back t’ serenity.”
