Recap: LeBron Air Zoom Generation SVSM Retro

Xhibition was honored with the opportunity to be a part of the long-anticipated LeBron Nike Air Zoom Generation “SVSM” Retro launch. As LeBron is one of our own here in Northeast Ohio, we felt it was important to make the event meaningful for local customers. Towards this end, we reached out to St. Vincent St. Mary with a special request to launch the coveted sneaker where it all began: LeBron James Arena in Akron, OH. Based on the significance of the launch, the school and coach Dru Joyce graciously granted access to the arena.

At the event, customers were allotted a special raffle ticket created by the Xhibition design team for a chance to purchase a LeBron Nike Air Zoom Generation “SVSM” Retro. While waiting for their number to be called, entrants also had the opportunity to tour the locker room and see where LeBron prepped for games. Stories shared by teammates with whom he played, as well as memorabilia that filled his former locker, allowed customers a rare chance to learn more about LeBron, ask questions and hear never before revealed tidbits about his formative years. As an extra treat, one of LeBron’s local favorites, Swenson’s, was catered in to feed the appetites of the hundreds that attended.

Thank you, Nike and St. Vincent St. Mary for helping to make this event a reality!

The Air Jordan Season of Her collection is here now!

Since 1985 people around the world have been coveting, collecting and lusting after the Air Jordan moniker. However, never before has Jordan designed a collection exclusively for women... Outfitted in premium leathers, satin fabrics and pastel color ways, the Air Jordan 1 Season of Her is an all new take on one of the most classic shoe silhouettes of all time.

Most recently, Xhibition was lucky enough to be the exclusive Ohio Launch store for this new Air Jordan collection.

In order to capture the essence of this new collection, as well as the feeling of an early spring afternoon; we transformed the store into a paradise of flowers and green space, while incorporating the SOH color palette throughout. Our motive was to create a complete sensory experience from the ground up, specifically for women. To this end, the store was infused with the scent of white gardenia while moss and flower covered display tables created an indoor “rolling hillside. All of this was brought together with our Air Jordan SOH ad campaign playing through out the store.

Check out the pictures and recap video below to experience the event in your own way, and don’t forget to peep the Air Jordan 1 Season of Her both in store and online!

Xhibition x adidas Consortium Terrex Tracefinder and Capsule Collection.

The winters in Northeast Ohio are hard: sometimes even brutal. Lake-effect snow and sub-zero temperatures create the need for footwear with serious durability. Whether it’s trudging to your car through two-feet of snow, or braving the elements for an outdoor excursion, you’re not getting very far in knit runners. When Xhibition was approached by adidas Consortium to work on their first joint project the choice was easy: Create a piece that combined fashion with rugged function.

The Xhibition x adidas Consortium Terrex Tracefinder is the amalgam of two realms. The durable winter ready materials are rugged, yet elegant. The pop color laces and three stripes branded velcro strap give the boot a look that functions far beyond its utilitarian genesis by adding modern stylish details. Protection is key, but so is style. Xhibition, is known throughout the midwest for its premium collection of footwear and apparel, and the collaboration had to represent the region as well as Xhibition’s brand and ethos.

To celebrate the launch of their first adidas Consortium product, Xhibition created a capsule collection that ties in the boot’s design, while furthering the connection to Northeast Ohio.  Specifically, Xhibition partnered with New Era to create a unique hat featuring ripstop nylon and a wrap around strap alluding back to the boot’s design. Additionally, they commissioned Cleveland’s Cha-O-Ha Design to create an exclusive EDC Card Multi-Tool.

The Xhibiton x adidas Consortium Terrex Tracefinder is available online and in-store at Xhibition.co and launches at at all adidas Consortium accounts on Saturday 10/28.

Behind the Xhibition x adidas Terrex Tracefinder design process.

The following interview with Robert Rosenthal, who is one of the owners of Xhibition, delves into the Xhibition x adidas Terrex Tracefinder Boot design, as well as what it is like collaborating with adidas. The interview was conducted by Jay, who works on the technology side of Xhbition.co.

Jay: “What was the inspiration behind the design of the Xhibition x Adidas Terrex Tracefinder?”

Robert: “We (Xhibition and adidas) wanted to design a boot to address the harshness of Cleveland and Midwest winters. Utilizing the performance features of the Tracefinder, which is a great product,  we also wanted to put it in a fashion space. For years this boot has been very utilitarian. The task for us at Xhibition was to figure how to maintain the essence of the boot for harsh environs, and at the same time give it a fashion bent. They (adidas) really wanted us to give our spin on how we could reinvent this boot for a fashion consumer.”

Jay: “So Terrex expresses more of the performance and outdoors arm of adidas and they wanted to blend the ruggedness of the boot with lifestyle fashion?”

Robert: Correct.

Jay: “Is this the first time they put boost in a boot?”

Robert: “I don’t think so. But I think its the first time that they viewed it as something different from its original intended use outdoors. They wanted to have the consumer experience it in the fashion space. And part of the process that we went through was looking at a lot of luxury boots that inspired us. We really tried to incorporate some of those design elements in the boot, marrying them with high performance. Importantly, we wanted to relate it to sneakerheads, which is why we designed it to be very wearable.”

Robert: “Another way of putting it is that we wanted to interpret what we were seeing in luxury and bring it down to the rugged space. And it was really important to relate to sneaker heads. And that's why it had to be very wearable. It's light, has boost technology, and the strap serves the boot in terms of fashion and function. We felt the whole design had to relate to that kid who's buying sneakers as well. So when you put it on, the boot feels more like you are wearing a big sneaker and not a boot.”

Jay: “And what was the idea behind the strap?”

Robert: “The strap is purely a fashion element that repeats itself in the luxury space, and we wanted to bring it into this space as well. So it's original intent was to be a fashion component. But when you wear the boot, it certainly gives you the feeling that it's not so bulky. So it also serves as function; it doesn't leave people feeling like they are wearing a big, clunky hiking boot.”

Jay: ”So it feels like you’re strapped in?”

Robert: “You feel like you are in a sneaker. But when you wear a boot, sometimes you feel like your foot wiggles around and is in all parts of the boot. The Xhibition x adidas Terrex boot really feels like you're wearing sneakers.”

Jay: “That's awesome. So what different colorations did you consider when you were going through the design process? Did you originally think of wool and a grey scale?“

Robert: “When working with adidas' design team, wool was brought in. I think on the second go around. We wanted to make the booth rich. We wanted to make our boot feel different than a typical boot. Honestly, the first go round with the wool component didn't work at all. It took us a long time to source the right (wool) fabric.“

Jay: “Where was it sourced? Was it anything special?”

Robert: “The adidas design team sourced it. So I do not know exactly where is came from. And it was the second time around that they found something that made sense. Originally, the boot was wool with rubber on the upper. But we felt that it needed a more natural look to give it a luxury feel, and substituted leather. The rubber just felt way too utilitarian.”

Jay: “Were there other colors? Did you experiment with black?

Robert: “We looked at other colors. We actually looked at like 30 colors. And our original concepts was to go very, very sneakerhead; bright and loud. And as we went through the process, we thought that it would have to be geared toward a very, very specific customer. However, upon taking a more thorough review of our approach, we felt that it made more sense to put it in a color you can wear it every day.”

Jay: “Do you think that there there’s some movement in the convergence of luxury and function?”

Robert: “I think so, based on what some players in the outdoor space are doing at the moment. But we really wanted to move it out of that space and felt it was much more important to create a luxury item at an attainable price. That was the idea. Create fashion luxury at a great price.”

Jay: “Where is the boot going to be sold?”

Robert: “We will be selling it at Xhibition in Cleveland, and it will be sold throughout all adidas Consortium doors throughout the world, as well."

Jay: “Is there anything you would like to say about working with adidas? How was the process?”

Robert: “adidas was a wonderful partner. We were particular about what we wanted to create and their design teams were very patient with us. We spent hours with them deciding on fabric, saying how the strap would look, and the like… The strap in particular took a long time as we wanted it to have adidas trademark three strikes without screaming their trefoil. They loved the fact that we were able to do some authentic adidas branding while staying true to our goal.”

Jay: “In working with adidas is there anything that surprised you about the process?”

Robert: “Time. Things just really, really take time to develop. You just get an appreciation for how the process of building a product works and the stuff just doesn't happen overnight. In working with a collaborator, we both had a vision of what we wanted to create. It took some time for both design teams to get aligned.”

Jay: “I’m sure that there was probably this piece of ‘here's what we'd like to do,’ and then there was ‘here are some of the limitations we have to work around.’

Robert: “Yes. But they really wanted this to come from us, and they were there to facilitate the blocking and tackling of the whole design process. Like getting samples made, and going back and forth on how it should fit and look. The boot went through three sampling processes to get everything right.”.

Jay: “So will you get another chance to work on another shoe?”

Robert: “I do not know, to be honest? We are just really focused on this collaboration right now and thank adidas for the opportunity… “

Air Jordan x KAWS Launch Event

Renowned for his visual pop art style, the artist KAWS has become one of the 21st century’s most prominent artists. His paintings, sculptures, and figurines are sought after by fine art collectors and casual fan alike with any iteration of his art selling for considerable amounts of money.

Not unfamiliar with the realm of high-priced collectibles, the Air Jordan line has continuously set the benchmark for fusing the world of art, design, and sport. Because of this lineage, a collaboration with KAWS - while at first glance seemingly contradictory - was a venture that instantly drew the attention of both sneaker enthusiasts and KAWS fans. Using the Air Jordan IV as the perfect medium, initial images of the limited collaboration generated such a response that we at Xhibition knew the only way to release the collection was to create something truly memorable.

With an insatiable demand for the shoes and matching apparel, we knew that there would have to be a drawing component to the release. However, we also wanted to create a release that would celebrate both the art of Kaws and the greatness of the Air Jordan line. After researching numerous venues, we realized the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) was the only choice. The MOCA’s world-class contemporary art galleries and modern aesthetic created the perfect backdrop for what proved to be an unforgettable experience.

Despite wanting to make this launch as unique as possible, we also wanted our store to be a part of it. To do so, we created invitations that would be free of charge and available in-store on a first come first serve basis. These invitations granted each customer entry into the event, as well as one raffle ticket for a chance to purchase the shoe or an apparel item. Within two hours of announcing that the tickets were available, they had all been claimed. At this point, we knew it was going to be a special night.

Because the KAWS x Air Jordan collaboration is just as much a work of art as it is a sneaker, we wanted to bring the work of KAWS and the gallery opening experience to our customers. During the event, we created a dimmed atmosphere with UV black lights that simultaneously highlighted the shoe’s unique glow-in-the-dark outsole. To bring KAWS’ work to life, we utilized several virtual reality headsets that allowed users to visit KAWS, and view his artwork as if they were there. Finally, we created a special film that juxtaposed some of Michael Jordan’s greatest moments with some of KAWS’ most famous works. In conjunction, these elements worked to bring the attendees closer to the theme and story of this generational collaboration.

Utilizing a live raffle for both the shoes and apparel gave as many of our customers a chance to purchase a piece of this collection. While the demand far exceeded what we were able to offer, the feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive. We would like to thank you, the customer, as well as Jordan for helping to create an especially memorable night for Xhibition and the city of Cleveland.
