“Oh..well please try to stay safe?”
She frowned when Katniss got a little closer with a more determined look on her face as she nodded slowly feeling her shoulders fall a little.
“I wasn’t planning on telling anyone, not even Finnick either way but just to assure you, your plan is safe with me.”
“I’ll try my best.”
Quickly she moved back, realizing that getting that close to Annie might have been making her a little uncomfortable. Katniss could admit to herself that she was a little abrasive at times. Well, most of the time.
“Thank you, Annie.”
Effie had been about to stand when she realized that Katniss hadn’t moved and instead had simply lean closer almost as if she would be about to tell her a secret, they were face to face so obviously anything that the girl was about to tell her would just be heard by Effie. As the words were spoken, the escort smiled. It had been a rough path but she had gained Katniss’ trust.
“And I will be here whenever you need to talk; you always know where to find me my dear. At any hour, any moment, I will be here.”
Katniss smiled at the woman and turned to walk away, though something stopped her. Dealing with Coin and Heavensbee duting the propos was almost too much to handle and she might just snap at them all. So, she looked back at the woman that had become such a support for the young archer and smiled a bit.
“Would you like to come with me?”
“I have a feeling the downworlders aren’t going to be too happy with increased numbers of nephilim roaming the city.”
“Of course they won’t, but they’ll have to deal with it. This is war.”

“Don’t think for one second that just because I’m on your side that I’ll be your little bitch. I just want the demons gone. That’s the end.”
“Never asked you to be my slave. The moment these demons are gone, I’m going back to Idris.”
“That would be greatly appreciated, Katniss. We need to work on that as soon as possible. We can’t let the Demons keep getting control over things around the city. I’m sure it won’t take long for the Council to set foot here and take care of it themselves.” If the Council made its way here, or sent one of their members, they were going to be doomed. Mostly because they would rethink how capable they are of handling things.
“Do we know if the demons are gathering anywhere? If there’s a large group, we could send a few hunters in to exterminate them. That could make it easier by decreasing their numbers.” Katniss began to plan, picking up her bow to the string and make sure it was still strong as ever.
“I guess we’re all glad we had Nuts and Bolts in the arena,” Johanna said. She felt a little bad about calling Wiress “Nuts” after what had happened to her. “Exploding arrows? I’m not sure I would trust you with them either.”
“They’ll be good to use against the Capitol. It’s something that they probably aren’t expecting.”
Then again, they weren’t really expecting Katniss to up and start fighting against them. The world was just full of surprises.
“Effie. Haymitch. Johanna. Annie. Maybe Cressida and Pollux. Then you.”
Peeta counted with his fingers, holding them up to show her. Seven. Seven people he had left. Seven people he knew he could trust. Seven out of thousands and thousands. Seven out of what used to be more before. Katniss had the same, probably. Maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less. So could anyone really blame him for wanting to stop her from taking her life? From pushing down the count by another one?
“Seven, and I can’t let that turn to six. Especially not when it’s you. Come here.”
He urged softly, moving closer and pulling her gently to his arms. The only sense of comfort he can truly give her right now.
“It won’t be six.”
She promised him, trying to give a small smile. Carefully Katniss moved to his side so they were pressed to one another and it didn’t take her long to feel comforted and calmed the moment his arms enveloped her. It was odd how after everything they had been through, he was still the only one who knew how to make her feel peace.
“I won’t do it again.”
Katniss replied in a light voice, though she could not promise she would never think of it again. Next time, though, she’d talk to him instead.
Effie winced a bit when Katniss suddenly stood up and spoke with a louder voice, yet she stood as well, walking to her and carefully placing her hands on her shoulders. “Listen to me, it would have happened anyway. Everything that- it would have happened. It is not your fault.“ Katniss had just been a lucky coincidence for the rebels, and she should know that.
She could not believe that what Effie was saying was true as it all just seemed to be on her. The damn berries, volunteering for her sister, refusing to kill Peeta. Every action that Katniss had taken caused this to happen. How would it have happened without her? But she didn’t say anything. Instead, her eyes simply lowered to the ground.
‘ surviving a WAR, dear, ’ effie replies to katniss with a sigh, and her attention stays on the girl. this is perhaps for the best, knowing if she dwells on her time spent in the capitol’s cells, effie’s thoughts would turn dark.
she feels her eyes go to katniss’ chest, hoping it doesn’t hurt TOO much. ‘ thank the HEAVENS for cinna’s design … ’ it’s HIM they must thank for katniss’ life being spared ;; had her outfit not been bulletproof, the GIRL ON FIRE’S flames would have been extinguished.
she looked down to where effie was gazing. though the woman could not see the nasty bruise underneath, katniss knew that she was aware of her injuries. it was all thanks to cinna’s design that they were less extensive and simply surface marks, besides the bruised ribs underneath.
“even when he’s gone he’s betting on me.” katniss whispered, remembering the many times he would tell her. it always brought a small smile to her face and a burst of courage.
“I don’t know if I’m in shape for that yet, but it’s good to know I have the option. I’d like to check out what he has though. He’s actually pretty brilliant.”
“He made a really nice bow for me, and some really cool arrows. I’ve yet to shoot some of them yet since they apparently explode.”
“I lost everything too.”
Most of them did. What happened, it left scars that would never heal, not just to Katniss, not just to Peeta, but to Annie, Johanna, everybody too. It would be hard to recover, and it seemed impossible, even, but people lose a lot and there should be no way but back up. What Katniss tried to do, it was the easy way out, and it was selfish of Peeta, but he knew he couldn’t let her do that.
“But I can’t lose you too.”
“Well you won’t. Not anymore.”
Even though a small part of her resented Peeta for not allowing her to go through with it, she was beginning to see the error of her ways. He was right in saying that they had all suffered and he was completely right to stop her. Everyone else was fighting through it while she’d simply tried to take the easy way out.
“I’m sorry.”
Her eyes automatically widened as she shook her head a little at the thought.
“Wait what? You would have to get into the Capitol and considering it’s Snow, who knows what he would try to do plus you would have to go with someone, you are going with someone right?”
“Haven’t thought that far.”
And then Katniss took a step towards Annie, getting a little close to the girl with an extremely serious look on her face. The words that the brunette was to say next were of the utmost importance:
“You cannot tell anyone what I just told you. Not even Finnick.”
Effie knew that probably she was getting on Katniss nerves something that she didn’t wanted to do. Maybe she should drop the conversation, maybe she shouldn’t push it, and instead she simply nodded to let the girl know that she understood.
“Very well my dear, I will not steal you more time then. I am sorry if I made you uncomfortable.”
Immediately the girl shook her head. How could Effie think that? She leaned down a bit to look at the woman, eye-to-eye, whispering in a low voice. It wasn’t a secret but she found whispering to be more personal:
“You’re one of the very people here I can talk to and feel comfortable.”
is there anyone who can help me with a theme background? i’ve tried and failed miserably. sos??
The girl before her really had no idea the effect that she could have, when she was acting on her own, when no one was telling her what to do, what to say, she was a force to the reckon with, that was what people reacted to, that’s what created the strength between the districts to finally fight back, to say enough and fight back.
“I know, but even if they do get hurt is not your fault. Everyone is well aware what can happen, everyone knows the risks. Never take that as your fault.”
She gave a small nod, though in her head Katniss knew that anyone else getting hurt would be her fault. But if Effie knew she was thinking that then she would probably go off on one of her speeches- which the Mockingjay was not in the mood to hear. Instead she stood up from the table and sighed.
“I think they want to shoot more propos.”
