Sometimes, you just gotta be self-indulgent with your writing, even if other people say it’s “cliche” or “overused”.

Write that masquerade ball with the lush gowns and the breathtaking stranger with the tempting smile peeking out from a trickster’s mask. Even if people say it’s been done a thousand times before and they don’t want to read it.

Write it because you like it

Write that happy ending that is so sweet, it’ll rot your teeth right out of your head. Even if people say happy endings that sweet aren’t realistic or whatever

Write it because you like it.

Write that heart-wrenching death scene just so you can write something decadently comforting afterward. Even if people complain that death scenes are only for the DramaTM.

Write it because you like it.

Yesterday my dad told me something that I think maybe more people need to hear.

You’re allowed to just do things for fun.

He told me that in this modern society, especially the United States, we seem to have this attitude that we shouldn’t do something unless we’re aiming to be the best at it. If we can’t sing like Beyonce or Frank Sinatra or something there’s no point to singing. If we can’t make the next big breakthrough there’s no point in looking into mechanics and engineering.

But, he tells me, it took him a long time to figure out that life doesn’t have to be a race. If you want to take up the piano when you’re a teenager or later you’re not going to master it. You’re not going to be able to play to huge concert halls, but that also shouldn’t stop you. You can study a language out of curiosity and then drop the ball if you want. You can just get okay at something or even be terrible at it. You can drop it for days or years and then pick it up again and it doesn’t have to be a shameful thing.

I’m really glad he told me that because today I opened my sketchpad for the first time in months and just started drawing. And it looks terrible. But I don’t care. I don’t have the talent or patience or spacial awareness to get anywhere near good at drawing, but it’s fun. It helps me focus my mind and nobody has to see it.

And because of what he told me, I’m thinking maybe someday soon I will take up the bass guitar. And I won’t worry about how well I do, or how fast I learn, or that I haven’t played an instrument since sixth grade, or that I don’t have that much time to practice. I’m just gonna enjoy the experience. Maybe I’ll try swing dancing again and take a class because I’m not the best dancer but damn if it isn’t fun.

Yeah, you don’t have to be good at things. It’s not a requirement. Maybe that seems obvious but it had never occurred to me before. You’re allowed to just enjoy what you’re doing. For me, that feels like a life changing revelation. I don’t have to be good at something to like it. I don’t have to put 100% effort into everything I do. It’s kind of amazing.

I'm with you, even if it hurts to recognize, bbc Sherlock would still existing without JL fandom or tjlcers. But, my question is... does it mean that we misunderstood everything in the show and JL will never happen? Because casual viewers are millions and millions and we are a minority...

(in reply to this ask: (x))

Short answer: As for “will Johnlock happen”, I don’t know. Personally, I still believe that Johnlock is endgame, but only time will tell.

However, and this is what I’m quite certain about: Moftiss are making the show they want to make. (Hey, even S4 was “insane wish-fulfilment” for them, and no one stopped them from going –apparently– completely bonkers.)

Hence, as much as Moftiss aren’t making the show for “us”, they are also not making it for the casuals either.

what is your opinion on mary?

Hey friend, I think Mary was a character who played a very background role in the original ACD canon stories, and then became oddly central to BBC Sherlock. Through s 3 and into s 4, she started to take a pivotal role that oddly edged out the other main characters. I think it was a strange choice for a show called “Sherlock” and not “Mary.” I think Mary was quite fascinating in some ways, they worked to add some depth to her character, but I felt they handled her badly on the show, and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth when all is said and done.

In fanfic, I enjoy seeing a variety of takes on Mary, and she remains a meaty person to portray a variety of ways, but yeah, in the show, it makes me furious how much she derailed a really good narrative set up in s1 and s2, and the way she obliterated the Holmes and Watson dynamic that has sustained just about every other version of this crime-solving duo.

Sherlock Fandom Post Series 4 - AO3 snapshot

If you are thinking the BBC Sherlock fandom has evaporated since series 4, or is about to die off from the drama of the day, I here to tell you that this network of fans are not so easy taken down.

On AO3, our most popular fanwork archive, works are going up at a rate of a 900 to 1000 per month. That’s like 30 new works per day! (sorry haters!

And all this activity? It’s not just long time fans holding on to times past. We are still getting lots of new creators contributing their first works to this fandom tag. More than 150 creators per month are coming in, inspired by the show, or other fanworks, or the opportunities to connect with a thriving fandom community. Because we are here, making cool shit and loving it!

People do leave fandom communities. They always do, for many many reasons. And new canon is disruptive to fandoms built in long gaps between content. But plenty of long time fans are still here.

These Sherlock Fandom creator waves (1,2) show how many creators from different years are still producing works and posting them for everyone to enjoy. Turn to them, if you are worries, and trust that if they can weather the storms of media controversies with TPTB, so will many others.

We got this.

Yes we do! Thanks for sharing this!

I love these stats posts, especially when they tell me cool stuff like I’m one of only about 100 people who have been consistently posting Sherlock fic since 2011. It feels like an accomplishment.

Rest assured, I will outlast most, if not all. I have had moments where I’ve come thisclose to it, but I just don’t really see myself leaving. I have too much more to do.
