Learning From Experience

@vetschoolcool / vetschoolcool.tumblr.com

I'm a fourth year vet student in the United States, with a particular interest in wildlife/exotic medicine. I keep crested geckos, Trans-Pecos rat snakes, a boa constrictor, and a handsome young feline named Sterling. This is my personal blog for everything from random thoughts and photos to vet school tales and lessons learned.

I'd like to ask for a bit of professional advice. My cat is 13 and completely healthy (aside from a touch of arthritis in her back), but she hasn't had her teeth cleaned in several years. I want to take her to our local vet and get them cleaned while she's healthy, but my mom says she won't put our elderly cat under anesthesia. Do you think it's more risk than it's worth to have an old but otherwise healthy cat knocked out in order to perform preventative care?

If her heart, thyroid and kidneys are up to scratch, I say do it (pending blood results).

We know that dental pain is often undiagnosed. We know (in several species including humans) that peridontal disease and chronic gingival inflammation predispose to earlier onset kidney disease and can worsen valvular heart disease.

Plus cleaned teeth is better for quality of life.

Old age isn’t a disease, and shouldn’t preclude an animal (or human) getting good care. Thirteen isn’t geriatric anyway, she could still be an old cat in six years time!

The most dangerous flightless bird in Australia is sitting under a beach umbrella stealing grapes.

rabbits only flop over like that if they feel completely safe btw

to elaborate: bunnies are prey animals and almost never have their guard down– even when they’re resting they’ll usually have their back legs in a position that allows them to quickly run away. if they’re jumping around it means they’re extremely happy!! and if they flop down w/o a care that means they feel very very comfortable and safe to the point of not having to worry about their surroundings. ^__^
