I don’t have enough brain cells to understand who/what fortnight is about… the neighbor and husband references?

okay, so like taylor said, fortnight is sort of a prologue to the entire album. it references a lot of other songs (down bad, florida!!!, peter, guilty as sin?) there are a few different ways that it could be read, and i may not stick to this interpretation, but the below is where i landed.

fortnight sets the scene for the entire album and the events that are about to unfold by telling a story about an alternate reality about the future she was headed to in which she and joe ignore their problems, stay together, and build the life they're planning. she's in need of psychiatric help, she's drinking, she's depressed. but the other guy has re-entered her orbit. they're going to keep crossing paths. she feels insane. he's right there. she is insane. her husband cheats on her; she's enraged at him. the other guy is married to someone great; she's enraged at her too. she feels insane. she is insane, because she's fully consumed with the anger of following the bad path instead of taking the risk.

so at the end of the song, she decides she has to run for it. she has to move to america. she has to go to florida and start over. she has to buy the car and let him touch her instead of just daydreaming about it. because if she doesn't scratch the itch, if she doesn't see what happens, if she doesn't chase the guy that's been her "what else?" then well, how will she ever know? and the rest of the record is her realizing that maybe she wishes she hadn't.

"everybody hates me" factoid actually just a statistical error. The average person doesn't hate you, especially not your friends. You, a person who sits in your room experiencing self loathing every day, are an outlier adn should not have been counted.

Imagine being Bob and Helen from the Incredibles. You have a daughter and you decided to name her violet. No reason, you just think it’s a nice name. Then suddenly you find out that she can turn invisible. You laugh at the coincidence of her name being similar to ultra violet, but you don’t think much of it.

You then have a boy, and you both came up with the name Dashiell, but you call him Dash for short. Again, no reason for this either. You just find the name nice. This kid then develops super speed. This one kept you both up at night. That’s 2 kids with names corresponding to their super powers; surely this can’t happen again, right?

Then you pop out a 3rd kid, and you decided to name him Jack-Jack. A very simple yet silly name that can’t really mean anything at all. There’s no way his powers can correspond to his name, right? Correct, cause he didn’t develop any powers at all, so that means it was all some sort of coincidence, and you naming your kids didn’t have anything to do with their powers.

Then a fucking carrot top lookin’ punk ass bitch decided to kidnap Jack-Jack, and this causes your baby to use his powers. And what are his powers? A bunch of random shit that ranges from turning his skin to metal, to teleporting around places. Basically a Jack of all Trades…..

Hey all, you know how internet searches suck now? When the results are awful, full-of-AI, death-of-the-internet levels of bad?

Start appending date constraints to your searches - "before:2023".

My results have gone from 90% AI bullshit to ~60% usable - which frankly at this point is a huge improvement.

One of the saddest things about Syndrome in the Incredibles is that he is genuinely talented in his own area of expertise. And he could have used that for good! He could have easily been the Edna Mode of superhero gadgets, because superheroes "need" (or at least use) cool gadgets all the time! He could have been loved and respected for his own brilliance! And ironically, that would have made him more like a real superhero, because what makes a Real Superhero is someone who is motivated to use their extraordinary gifts to help others. But Syndrome didn't really care about helping others; what he wanted was the Fame, the Glory, the Adoration of being the center of attention, so he never would have been content with a "power behind the throne" kind of position. But he COULD have been loved and respected for who he already was, and that's part of the tragedy of it.
