I cannot stress this enough the fact that Rebecca Black overcame the absolute inundation of internet harassment and bullying after she released a kind of bad song that she didn’t even want to make, because people love to hate teenage girls, and NOW just dropped a new single with a killer mv about being wlw is SUCH an iconic plot point of 2021

sorry wait i know i'm reblogging this twice and with a comment but this information changed my entire worldview on particularly teenage girls in music when i first found it out which was at a thing called "music fridays" at my high school, where we'd spend 5-10 minutes at the beginning of every friday going over pop culture or even obscure music things Friday came out and after like a month of resisting, my teacher just walked up to the board and wrote "is Friday a bad song?" we concluded, after listening, dissecting, and discussing the song, that yes, it is. and then my teacher pulled up information about the company behind the whole thing. "any of you could have sung this song. Rebecca Black did not write this. It was a gift. and her gift, from well-meaning parents trying to give a girl a taste of her dream, went viral." lots of "oh fuck"s went around the classroom. not out loud, bc the teacher would have given us Looks at that, but like. he talked about how often young people are eviscerated for decisions that might not be their own. how often that happens particularly in the arts, and how that can destroy the essence of a person, because at that young, you ARE your art, even if you didn't WRITE your art. he talked about justin bieber, britney spears, hilary duff. it definitely went over that 5-10 minutes, but goddamn, it changed my mind about a LOT of things.

Inclusive language is for everyone!!

It's a good one for non-standard relationship styles too. You don't have to split hairs trying to explain "well, it's more serious than 'boyfriend' or 'girlfriend', but we don't have any intention of getting married ever. Or "we live together and are planning our lives together to some extent but it's not a romantic thing" and so on.

i think popular media culture is poisoned in the following ways:

  • if you like something, people will make fun of you because you have admitted to experiencing a sincere emotion. this makes people defensive about what they like.
  • if you don’t like something, people will take your opinion personally and attack you. this makes people feel like they have to have a very good reason to dislike something.
  • people reach for reasons to like vs dislike things that are serious and often politically relevant so they can defend themselves from other opinion-havers.
  • these positions mutually reinforce each other until it is assumed that any declaration of liking or disliking something is both personally and politically relevant by default.
  • i am forced to look at this every time one of my fandom posts blows up.

Bugs Bunny could singlehandedly defeat Thanos by dressing up as a TSA agent and setting up a metal detector in the middle of the battlefield saying that all metal objects must be removed if you want to pass on through now stick around for my 2,000 word essay on just how effectively he would convince The Mad Titan to comply

“For shame, doc! Dontcha know we got other folks waiting?”

(Thanos looks behind him and sees dozens of Bugs Bunnies dressed as angry yelling travelers with huge bags of luggage. Thanos rubs his neck guiltily and begins sliding off the gauntlet)

I felt compelled

I don’t think I’ve seen such a finely crafted Looney Toons joke in over two decades. Bravo.

Two identical infants lay in the cradle. “One you bore, the other is a Changeling. Choose wisely,” the Fae’s voice echoed from the shadows. “I’m taking both my children,” the mother said defiantly.

Once upon a time there was a peasant woman who was unhappy because she had no children. She was happy in all other things – her husband was kind and loving, and they owned their farm and had food and money enough. But she longed for children.

She went to church and prayed for a child every Sunday, but no child came. She went to every midwife and wise woman for miles around, and followed all their advice, but no child came.

So at last, though she knew of the dangers, she drew her brown woolen shawl over her head and on Midsummer’s Eve she went out to the forest, to a certain clearing, and dropped a copper penny and a lock of her hair into the old well there, and she wished for a child.

“You know,” a voice said behind her, a low and cunning voice, a voice that had a coax and a wheedle and a sly laugh all mixed up in it together, “that there will be a price to pay later.”

She did not turn to look at the creature. She knew better. “I know it,” she said, still staring into the well. “And I also know that I may set conditions.”

“That is true,” the creature said, after a moment, and there was less laugh in its voice now. It wasn’t pleased that she knew that. “What condition do you set? A boy child? A lucky one?”

“That the child will come to no harm,” she said, lifting her head to stare into the woods. “Whether I succeed in paying your price, or passing your test, or not, the child will not suffer. It will not die, or be hurt, or cursed with ill luck or any other thing. No harm of any kind.”

“Ahhhhh.” The sound was long and low, between a sigh and a hum. “Yes. That is a fair condition. Whatever price there is, whatever test there is, it will be for you and you alone.” A long, slender hand extended into her sight, almost human save for the skin, as pale a green as a new leaf. The hand held a pear, ripe and sweet, though the pears were nowhere ripe yet. “Eat this,” the voice said, and she trembled with the effort of keeping her eyes straight ahead. “All of it, on your way home. Before you enter your own gate, plant the core of it beside the gate, where the ground is soft and rich. You will have what you ask for.”

I think it's always important to be reminded that the worst video you have seen from Gaza is in fact a drop in an ocean of atrocities committed by Israel every single minute of every day. Think about it, for that video to reach you, the horrific moment had to happen with someone who has a camera to be around and for that person to have a functioning phone service to upload it and for the video to circulate enough in order to reach you. Always remember that what you're seeing is what is happening to a single person out of over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza trying to survive this genocide, each one of them with a heartbreaking story of their own that probably will never manage to reach your feed. Things are infinitely worse than what we can even fathom.

[Video Description: a lynx casually walks down a snow covered bank, onto a log and reaches a frozen river. The lynx takes two steps; the ice cracks loudly. Instantly the lynx stands still. It then looks around and then leaps. The lynx makes a landing on the other side of the river, a faint crack can be heard. It continues on its way unfazed. /End VD.]
