The post-60’s, particularly the 90’s and early 2000’s, definition of “queer” as a political movement against assimilation and for radical redistribution is dead and faggot fills the same niche for me but with the added benefit of never having the potential to be normalized by straight allies.
Neoliberal Gay Inc and their straight allies really went out of their way to remove the previous utility of the term queer and to sap it of any meaning by normalizing the fuck out of that word. The power of queer was that it was a slur, but now that it’s a combination of slur, something enthusiastic allies call people unprompted, and a depoliticized personal statement that doesn’t even imply a connection to revolutionary ideals it’s lost in a cavern of competing mostly annoying definitions. The ambiguity that once defined it now is strict rigid normalcy. It’s really sad to see.
