You will not believe the amount of times I’ve read an English word and thought of a pronunciation and then continued to pronounce the word that way in my head for years only to discover that it has a completely different pronunciation and I would’ve made a fool of myself if I had ever pronounced that word out loud

it’s okay native speakers have exactly the same experience

It’s a phenomenon unofficially known as “reader’s accent” and it’s very common! Because English has so many words (in fact considered to be the language with the greatest number of words) lots of people, and in particular those who read a lot as children, will encounter a word in writing long before they hear it spoken. They’ll develop the idea of what the word will sound like in their head, and only realize when they hear it spoken that their idea was different than the common pronunciation. 

I’ve even had it where I’ve known words as spoken words, and I’ve known words as written words, and it’s taken me a significant amount of time to realize that they were the same word. One example I can think of is the word indictment. I always thought “indictment” was pronounced “in-dict-ment,” and it was only when all these police indictments started happening on the news (with the news crawls below the words being spoken) that I realized it was “in-DITE-ment.” 

So yeah, never feel bad for discovering that a word in English is pronounced differently than you would’ve expected. English has had influence from SO many other languages over the centuries as it developed, and as a result, many of our pronunciation “guidelines” are borrowed from the languages the words originally came from. It’s massively inconsistent, and it’s one of the reasons that learning English as a second language is so difficult. 

As my favorite poster in the campus writing center used to proclaim: 

“English: A language that lurks in dark alleyways, beats up other languages, and rifles through their pockets for spare vocabulary.”

I know it’s originally French so it doesn’t really count but I thought there were two different words for the exact same concept and that I had only ever heard one spoken and only seen the other written.

I seriously thought there were two synonyms for fancy underwear and one was just was more popular in writing and that it was pronounced Lynn-gear-ee and no one said it because it didn’t sound as nice as the French word for the same concept.

No I have no idea how I expect lingerie to be spelled. Probably with at least one A and at least one J. Maybe a W. An accent mark somewhere (which is why no one typed it, obviously. This made perfect sense to little me ok? We say the French word because it sounds nice but type the English one because it’s easy with our keyboards! Duh! My logic was completely sound!)

And tbh I still read it like that cause it’s just muscle memory now and it sounds right in my head

Honestly I tho I learned the Colonel thing from IronMan when I was watching it with English subs and I was like uuum excuse me?? THAT’S the Kernel word??

Conscience should sound like science. It just should.

I'm older than the average bear on this site, and I only recently learned that diaspora is pronounced dee-ass-pora, not die-ya-spora. Cause ya know, diameter is die-a-mehter, not dee-a-mehter.

Don't create a separate blog. That would imply that Elsanna is something that needs to be segregated into its own virtual red light district, and sets a bad precedent. As you said there are tools for people to curate their online experiences.

Why does Anna's face look so much more sad and afraid, in oppose to Elsa's pained and desperate expression?

Because Anna knew, however much she didn’t want to die or to disappoint Kristoff or Elsa or anyone, she was there to stop Hans - at least that once. 

Elsa, however much she didn’t want to die or to disappoint and hurt Anna, knew she had important information that could save the Northuldra and the Arendellans but she could only send her message; she couldn’t know if it would arrive, or if it would be understood, or if Anna could do whatever needed to be done. It was urgent, and she did what she could, but she could only hope.

Anna looked sad because she was sad. Elsa looked desperate because she was desperate.

Ya know.. Anna rolled a natural 20 on that perception check while wielding a Wand of Wisdom +5. She concluded from that one scene that her grandfather assassinated the Northuldra leader. But it could just as easily have been an execution in response to an unprovoked attack on the Arendellians. Suppose it was?

But never mind that.. how did Anna also conclude that breaking the dam was the key to lifting the fog, since the fog didn’t result from the building of the dam?

On Iran. Or is it Iraq? It's hard to tell ...

On behalf of those of us who spent much of 2002-03 explaining why war with Iraq would be a disaster and wasn't going to go anywhere near the way the Bush administration promised it was going to go -- BEFORE we got into that stupid, stupid war -- let me just say that war with Iran will be a disaster and it will go nowhere near the way Trump and his enablers (of both parties) will claim it will go.

Feel free to begin ignoring us now.

A war with Iran would be much worse. Not only is Iran like 3x the size and twice the population with a better military than Iraq had, it’s a stone’s throw away from a major chokepoint in the world’s energy supply. It also sponsors militia groups all over the region so any conflict will not be limited to Iran. There was a reason previous presidents didn’t push tensions with Iran past a simmer.

I can’t stop thinking about Elsa having immense amounts of engineering knowledge. She’s a nerd nerd. Also, yes, Ryder is a slacker.

Is there anyone here who had read a fic called ‘背包里的红茶’ or ‘Earl Grey In The Bag’ ??

It is an AU Elsanna fic written by Taiwanese author. The old one back in 2014 but I just found it. I read 4 ep of it and I can’t find the rest. Did the author finish this fic or it is just that 4 ep without an ending?

If anyone here has some clues then please help me, especially the Chinese or Taiwanese fans.

I took inspiration from this fic Stolen Kisses

That was wonderful read, romance/humor was my type :) I saw that the author had a tumblr, but I couldn’t find it. If anyone know the author page, please let me know so I can properly credit them.

I’m thinking whatever Elsa creates out of ice is just ice and melts normally. So all the stuff she made for those kids would eventually melt regardless. But the sentient beings she creates like Olaf, Marshmallow and the snowgies would not survive her death and would revert to their inanimate forms.

So as long as the temperature on the north mountain remains below the freezing point, the ice castle remains.

Exm, I ship elsanna, I dont think anyone has the right to prevent me from shipping them, elsanna is very popular in China, Japan and Korea, and tumblr is not just belongs to people who doesn't ship that 2 girls, OK?
