As an adult in love with my buddy, knowing we aren’t a thing, knowing we hooked up once and are now “just” friends who text every day, knowing he might get engaged again, knowing that if I love him I’ll love his choices, even if I’m nowhere near a part of them—I can attest how accurate and finely acted Dean/Cas is and how specifically it captured being in love with another guy over years and years. Jensen doesn’t act a guy who is besotted, he acts a guy whose beloved is a presence of total peace. Even when they’re pissing each other off, they seem simply relaxed in each other’s company. They are on the same wavelength. Even when animated or angry, someone whose presence makes you completely in tune with life as it happens. Someone you could quite literally talk to forever. On some level, these guys get that, the way these two characters feel completely safe in each other’s company, even when they don’t feel safe with each other at all. They’re something more than enamored or obsessed; as in Hannibal, they’re co-creating something as precious as life, company of people who are being real and make you more alive with them. The most precious gift, the opposite of obfuscation and abuse: clarity.
