a sentinel of justice

I used to lie and kill in a service of liars and killers. They beat us at our own game. The thing is, though, I don't like losing...

The voice simply jolts her awake, cerulean orbs alive with power before the relic      allows a breath to escape her.❝-Yes…I’m fine…just a nightmare is all… ❞

She fishes out some Prosecco for herself. Nothing in her life currently merits champagne, but that matters quite little to her.

❛         well, it’s like the good general phillips once said –                             let’s go find ourselves two more heads. ❜
the building is silent, save for the faint buzz, an undercurrent of noise originating from the massive machines down in the labs in the base. machines that needed to be destroyed - by their own hands, and after they made sure it wasn’t used for anything so secretive that hydra would deep six it before SHIELD could find out what it was used for. and with HYDRA — that was usually the case.
but evelyn’s words STICK on his mind, and steve’s gaze flickers across the hall that they’re in. he was thinking the same thing and somehow, steve is getting the feeling that whatever HYDRA has planned, it isn’t a security measure.  it has to do with whatever they were doing here in the base. HYDRA doesn’t CARE about casualties on either side. if death was necessary they would die for HYDRA. numbers were never a worry for them. so the fact that there weren’t any HYDRA goons coming at them … it meant that there wasn’t any NEED for HYDRA goons to come after them. something - or someone - else would take care of them.
steve narrows his eyes, knowing that this no longer a typical HYDRA base raiding.

❛         then let’s find out why and stop whatever it is they’re planning.            it’s likely they’re keeping it where we need to go, so keep close. ❜

WRONG day to leave the suit at home, it seems. The sum of Evelyn’s alias lays in a security-padded drawer back in her Manhattan apartment. Not that she ever leaves home unguarded. She has a few useful trinkets with her for certain. But she didn’t wake up this morning with the intent to invade a HYDRA base. This turn of events is unprecedented. She wonders what will find her first -- freedom or FAILURE?

She heeds the Captain’s orders, staying close with her gun cocked to watch his six. Ears strain for the slightest hint of movement -- footsteps, chatter, anything to signal other life in the area -- but they are decidedly alone.

❝They’ve got a lot of FAITH in whatever it is.❞

And if that isn’t unnerving, nothing is.

Their movements carry them through the corridor and out to a new, forked passage. The two equally sized tunnels boast minimal discrepancies. One seems slightly more illuminated, though they’re both fairly dim. For a foolish second, she wonders if this is a 50/50 -- as if one path is safe and the other doomed. Odds are they’re BOTH traps.

❝I’m not playing Let’s Make a Deal with this shit. YOU choose.❞

the med lab at avengers’ tower is pretty high tech, even if it’s small. the hospital hadn’t been an option. as pepper had flown home with her precious cargo in tow, J.A.R.V.I.S. had helpfully pulled up newsfeeds after matching the image of the purple- haired vigilante. pepper’s not mad, of course not. but the irony of evelyn lecturing her on her duties as rescue is not lost on her. in a way, they’re lucky     ——–    had evelyn not known about pepper’s identity as rescue, she wouldn’t have been able to call her for help tonight.

after being instructed by the doctor on call that ms phoenix just needed to rest quietly for a few days and take medication to prevent any swelling in her brain from the hit, pepper had made sure her friend was kept comfortable while she slept off what had to be the worst headache possible.

twelve hours later, after being notified by J.A.R.V.I.S. that the patient had woken, pepper nudges her way back into the med bay, a laptop and e-reader tucked under her arm.

      ‘ i guess we’re even now, huh? ‘

Perhaps KARMA is exacting itself through pain. A migraine without rival has its claws in her cortex. The lights are too bright; the noises too loud. Nausea laps within her like an uneasy ocean against the shore, a constant reminder of her shortcomings yesterday. (Or is it longer past than that? Lord knows she hasn’t a clue.) Through all the aches and throbs, one thing remains clear -- she is undoubtedly taking a break from the night shift.        ❝Even?❞        She knows where the sentiment comes from, but she DISAGREES. The scale has tipped the other way. While their secret lives are now anything but, Evelyn has never rescued Pepper. The trauma alone tells a grisly tale -- she’d be DEAD without Rescue. But what has Sentinela ever offered in return? Not lies, per se, but evasion from truth.

  Matt’s laugh sounded painful.
“Congratulations, that almost makes me trust you LESS.”
He remembered when certain files were leaked to the public. SHIELD, a previously unknown organization, theoretically should have been shut down by now and its agents dispersed. But Matt knew disbanded organizations could still be threats.
“I’m not—I have no interest in being recruited by whatever’s left of your—your trainers.”
Matt wrapped his hand around the back of his head, where his mask was soaked in blood. She was right; he had no time for this. He grit his teeth and rolled his shoulders back.
“Give me your NAME. I have to be sure we–we’re getting in equally deep.”

The notion of RECRUITMENT makes her stomach turn. Her former loyalties are just that -- past. S.H.I.E.L.D. is nothing but another obstacle now; another organization filled with threats pretending to be heroes. Bunch of time bombs, the lot of them.

❝It’s EVELYN PHOENIX. You can Google me later if you’re not dead. That DEEP enough for you, Wonder Boy?❞

Wrapping an arm around him, she allows him to shift as much of his weight as he pleases onto her. Her strength training is up to par -- she could carry him threshold-style, but she has the distinct feeling that won’t fly so well with him.

Pressing forward, she’s relieved at how near the safe house is. Much further and it would be Bad News Bears for this mystery man.

❝If there’s only one other thing you get to know about me, remember THIS: I hate S.H.I.E.L.D. They fucked me outta FIFTEEN years of my life. Last thing I’m gonna do is drop you off on their doorstep. But their training’s real damn helpful -- gotta give ‘em that.❞

I'm 100% okay with your muse having a history with mine.

You want their families to be rivals? I’m down. They dated the same person? Cool. They have the same classes together? Neat. Our first interaction doesn’t need to be our muses first interaction. I like having already developed relationships, adds a little something. Plus, gives the opportunity for a “how did they meet” thread later on.
