he nods quietly. his smile is gone and replaced with something more serious; grave even knowing the implication of what she said.
“ … i understand. ” after meeting many bad family members of friends and foes alike he thinks sometimes it’s perfect he stays with his own. only that kind of blood can he trust.
“ you don’t have to explain me with that face. ” his hands reach out to hers and he’d silently ask with his eyes for permission to intertwine them. “ i know that type of bullshit the previous generation… and the one before that tries to pull on us. ”
image
She knew what he was asking.

Carefully, she laced her fingers between his, sat her elbow on the table, and then sat her head on her hand. Head tilted to the side, she stared for a moment. Just let silence hang as she tried to pack this away immediately. It wasn’t something she wanted to discuss. Too much heart break and pain to begin to unpack today.

Yet, she spared him that.

It pulled a smile to her face, a sad one, but a smile none the less.

“You wouldn’t like them anyway.” Hell, had been American, and the Phantom Thieves rocking about New York, he would have been a prime target. “Well, my father, you’ve come along too late to meet my mother.” A small blessing, though, she’d canonised her mother once. Clung on the idea that her mother was…well, not the women who had married her father, but what kind of person married someone like her father? Someone just as guilty.

“Thankfully he’s no very fond of Tokyo.”

Her stammering was endearing. An attribute that he often picked up with people who were pushed into his presence. Though it was her words that made him continue that diminutive smile on his face.
“Ah, that’s just it. You see, you’re already exhibiting the prime example of what a ‘hero’ should look like. You’re humbling the deeds that you commit. They may appear small to you, but they are the entire world to others.” He raised his finger and waggled it back and forth.
“To address your other question.. well, you’re here simply because the world needs those types of heroes. ShinRa .. does not carry the same weight in the name as it used to. We need to aspire people. There’s a lot of talent out there that can help rebuild the city. We need to find them and rouse up the population so that they want to do good as well.”
It all sounded so easy when he spoke it—but he knew of the complications that surrounded the blueprints he laid out for the city. He was working behind the scenes, with the help of an ex-employer of ShinRa.
His hand came to brace the frame of the door and it was Elena that witnessed this change in body language first. “Sir! Please..” She grasped him lightly by the arm and guided him to a chair. He would have fussed, especially in the presence of a guest, but Elena wouldn’t have it any other way.
With a nod of his head, he gave a soft shrug of his shoulders. “These days have been very taxing, forgive my moment of weakness.”

“You’re only human…” Kate offered gently, humans got to be weak, they got to be sick, they got to need things. Even the most bigger than life figureheads, were simply human. “Illness isn’t an indulgence you should pay for, nor is it a crime for which you should be punished.” It was a horrible, random, happenstance that could strike anyone at any moment.  It wasn’t part of some great plan, or great test, it was just the awful randomness of the universe. “There’s nothing to forgive.” She was squashing that notion right at the start.

An intake of air, she thought about how to broach the next subject, “companies like yours, imploded for smaller things on my world.” It was an implied; ‘you got lucky.’ “I mean, you should have seen what Enron did, one of the biggest companies on the planet, a sixty billion dollar energy company, they bankrolled the presidents elections, could manipulate entire governments. Went bankrupt in less than a month.” It occurred to her, after she’d started the story they weren’t actually that interested. Though, maybe it would demonstrate that she wasn’t so far removed from this world as she appeared. “Turned out, it was a fraud on a scale the world had never seen before…largest scandal in history.”

A pause. She glanced around the room, “sorry I – ramble, anyway, point I’m getting to. You’re not the first fall from grace and you wont be the last, the only thing that will make you different is if you learn from it.” At least she hoped they had. “The world doesn’t need a corporation right now.” Kate frowned slightly, no it was a statement she would stand by right now. “It needs a government. Someone that will bring structure and care.” She expanded. “And fast, or everything you’re working on, is going to fall apart.”

ren awoke from a very peaceful slumber. unlike the previous day the white is more a welcoming sight as he stretches himself out. he sees kate and gives her a gentle wave. that wouldn’t last long because a moment later he finds himself in a hug. his girlfriend goes on a rant (?) and talks about things like communication.
“ hey, did something happen while i was asleep - ” and that he couldn’t finish since he’s now being shaken around a bit. “ kate, i love you too, but what happened? i’m kind of getting worried. is there a hit out on me or something akin to it? ”

Dreaming wasn’t something she did a lot of, it had never struck her as strange, most days she awoke with only blank space where, whatever her brain had been doing had just been deleted from her memory. Yet, every so often, it was so distressing it broke through, and it ripped emotion out of her chest.

Image

They were normally of loss, of losing something else that was close to her heart. This time it was him. It had shaken her. “No…sorry.” Great, not she had over reacted, she would rather the ground just swallowed her up right there and then. “Just…weird dream…that’s all.” She’s trying, to play it down how much it had upset her. The fact it did upset her scared her. Love was frightening in ways she didn’t understand.

“I just –“ Kate stammered. “It freaked me out.”

“In my defense, there are a lot of great bands I haven’t heard of…!” He chuckled, holding up his hands as a playful sign of his innocence.  Truth be told, he hadn’t listened to music very much except for when he was working out.  He was only just now beginning to really discover music for himself.
“That sounds good to me! Will you tell me about the meaning of the lyrics? My English still isn’t that good,” He admitted sheepishly, unsure if he was making an impossible request.  “Or maybe it doesn’t really matter - music is music, yeah? Either way, I’ll be looking forward to whatever you give me!”
“Those are some interesting band names,” He was particularly intrigued by the one called ‘The Misfits’.  Maybe it was just a superficial name but it couldn’t help but remind him of his own group of friends, also misfits in a sense.  He was already beginning to feel a small kinship with this band.  “A listening party sounds fun! Let’s get some snacks and do this!”
Image

“I am so down for this.” Yes! Exciting. Maybe a little but too exciting. It felt almost like making a friend. All she could so was smile, almost sheepishly too, “if you help me buy the snacks?” Kate asked in return. Well, Japanese was a difficult language and while her spoken Japanese was doable, reading it…was a whole other level of difficulty. Never mind navigating the food, sure, even when she could read the food…didn’t mean she knew that it was.

“I found out what umeboshi was the hard way,” a small sigh, yeah, turns out they were soup, very sour, extremely sour. God. For a moment she paused, an almost embarrassed expression on her face, but, living here had got her over that fast. If she got embarrassed every time something threw a curve ball at her here, and she had to ask for help, it would be a constant embarrassment.

“Stories like that is I guess why people think I’m stupid though.”

“Mmm, the kids want a cat,” she mused, smiling softly at Kate. “Marlene says we should get one that matches Cloud’s hair. Something tells me he wouldn’t really approve.” It’d be a never ending joke, which would be funny for about a day, then would wreck havoc – especially if Yuffie ever came around.
“Sounds like this cat knows who to trust then,” Tifa added, her smile growing. “Maybe I’ll take you up on that offer one of these days. It’d be nice to get a break from here every once in a while. I love it, but a change of scenery is good for the soul.”
Image

Kate laughed. Properly laughed. “You’re not gonna find a cat with hair like that,” no, wouldn’t come close, “need a chocobo for that – but I’m guessing I’m not the first one to make that joke.” Not by a million miles. “Hairdressers must hate him.”

Honestly, Kate considered that it would be a downgrade in scenery but, whatever, “it’s not much to look at but, you know, it’s home…now.” It was all she had. It was the only place here she actually really knew now. “Suppose anywhere can be home if you think of it like that.”

Avatar
Kate’s tone was almost robotic…foreign to Tifa’s ears, surely. Her eyes narrowed, her blood pumping as she tried to understand why there was blood and a dead body behind her place of business.
image
Her face hardened immediately, hands on her hips as she focused all attention on the woman in front of her.
“You’re going to explain to me what’s going on. Now.” Her voice was low and cautious. Not all too dissimilar to what she sounded like when disciplining the children, but she was all seriousness now.

The tone of voice, said it all.

Kate didn’t know what to say.

What was she meant to say? A deep breath, she considered for a moment telling her the truth, and right now, there was no other way out. “So when I said I was not from here I quite literally meant this planet, I’m from another world and the thing that stranded me here is now here to get me, and potentially create utter chaos while doing so.”

Silence. She just blinked.

Was that too much?

“So…if you don’t believe that, that’s totally understandable but I have to go stop this. Can you feed my cat?”

“I think I deserve six bottles of vodka.” Reno made sure that was loud enough as he was taking out his phone again. Had to tell Elena that the keys were. Then he spent a couple minutes answering the messages that he had gotten before slipping the phone back into his pocket. Alright boy, what are you supposed to do now?
“How are you feeling right now?” There were just certain things that didn’t get commented on for varying reasons. Those reasons being that Reno couldn’t handle other people crying around him. And he was aware that certain subjects just brought that out in people. Would this whole family topic do that with her? He had no idea, but he wasn’t going to chance it just yet.
“Need more morphine or something? A fluffier pillow? A warmer blanket? I know where all that shit is, I’ve been here often enough.” And he might make one or two more stops along the way just to get some things that he needed.

“Alright – alright – you can have the vodka.” She relented, unusually. “Don’t expect me to give in again.” Kate was too tired to keep the argument up. Instead she just smiled to herself, the small laugh made her side hurt, a wince crossing her face.

“Sore.” It was an unsurprising answer. A badly timed cough just exacerbated the entire thing. Rubbing her face with her hand, she rested her wrist over her eyes, trying to steal a moment of darkness from the room as pain washed through her, “yeah – yeah.” It was hard to admit. She would have normally pushed through it but…god no, not this time.

“It’s pretty sore…” and at least it would help knock her out too, and she would get some kind of unconscious sleep mix.

Avatar
“ thankfully you’ve never seen me in an actual argument. ” defiant, insisting and without a pause; now that is how ren describes himself when he’s fighting against something and the other party isn’t listening. “ and i prefer to keep things a more pacifistic way when it’s possible… although a little chaos can’t ever harm someone. ” he winks at kate and then he laughs. a nudge is given along; just as a treat.
image
“ maybe once april is over i can invite them; this month is quite busy for them after all. ” his father would have to work his students along for exams and his mother had many things to check and discuss about. “ but - ” he adds that pause just for the dramatics.
“ i’d love for you to meet them as well. ”

The nudge brought a smile to her face, a bright smile, a blue crept across her cheek as she glanced down her lap. Lifting her head, she aimed the smile at him. “A little chaos brought a whole lot of order to my life.” Paradoxical maybe, but he was the force that held together all he chaos in her life, brought order to something that should have bubbled out of control. Then he surprised her.

Image

Sure, she had dropped the hint but she hadn’t expected him to run with it so fast. “Huh? Really?” Maybe he was joking? Though this didn’t seem like the joking kind of conversation. Yet, there was a complex weave of emotions that hit her. He seemed to have this perfect family, wonderful parents. She couldn’t offer him the same.

“Are you okay with…not meeting mine?” Well, maybe he would one day but it wouldn’t be the same, it wouldn’t be a pleasant experience. Not one she would subject him to. While family was important, some were just…not worth the trouble.

“Pfft. Elena is gonna get wine drunk and sing karaoke with the cat.”
Reno wasn’t saying that it would happen. He wasn’t saying that it wouldn’t happen. But he had known it to happen before. Still had the video somewhere. Probably on his laptop at home. Could he access that video from his phone though? It was worth finding out.
So his phone was in his hand, but it was sending messages to the others. First to Elena to let her know she was on cat duty. “Is there a key somewhere she can grab so she can get in?” A brief conversation with Elena before he started sending a couple messages to Tseng. Then he started sending messages to Rude about coming to pick him up soon. Reno was now having a total of four conversations at the same time.
“We might not be a blood family, but we’re still a family. Turks take care of one another.” So there really wasn’t a need to thank him or the others, but he wouldn’t say that. If she wanted to, she could. There was no one saying she couldn’t.
“Just focus on getting better. We’ll take care of the rest.”

“The cat will love that,” she was serious. “Attention seeking little shit.” Despite the profanity, she did love that cat, a lot. “It broken into my apartment through an open window and never left.” That was that. Kate had been chosen. Blessed by the cat God, and that was the end of that story.

It took her a moment of thinking, to work out where her stuff was. Hell, fucked if she knew. “There’s spare keys in my locker…I don’t know where my stuff is.” It would show up eventually she was sure. It would need to.

It sunk in, this idea of family, “at least I got one family that wont try to kill me.” The statement slipped out, normally she would have caught it, but, too late now. She offered him a smile, “thanks, I owe you…like…six drinks.” A pause, before she spotted the loophole in her own plan. “Beers. Like…I’m not buying you six bottles of vodka. You’ll die and I’ll be broke.”

Avatar
“I’ll take a drink, Elena.” Rude had said once Kate declined hers. It gave Elena something to do, something other than peering over at their guest like she was just itching to strike any of them. Reno, on the other hand, had already grabbed an alcoholic beverage from the fridge, popping the cap and haphazardly falling onto the couch right next to the woman.
He had to raise his bottle so that he didn’t spill it through the crash landing he did. “Don’t worry, nothin’ bad is gonna happen. Elena is just short-fused these days. I used to be like that.” Reno gave the blonde a toast before taking a swig of the brown bottle.
“Haha, very funny. I don’t think I changed one bit.” Her voice carried on from inside the fridge, grabbing Rude’s personal choice and handing it to him after popping the cap off with such grace and quickness it was obvious she had done this plenty of times before.
The commotion must have awoken Rufus for he suddenly appeared at his bedroom’s doorframe, leaning into it and giving off a very bewildered look. “Guests?” He spoke, softly at first before clearing his throat. He didn’t recall having any sort of appointment with anyone in his book.
“Oh Sir!” Elena chirped, knocking over the chair that she had just sat down in. “I wasn’t expecting anyone as well! But Reno and Rude here said that you were looking for a ‘good getter’.” She made sure to use their own words in this explanation. “I’m sorry we woke you, I tried to make Reno shut up..” She mumbled while putting her chair back to the table from its toppled position.
Waving a dismissive hand his eyes fell to Rude to explain. “This is Kate, Sir. She’s done quite a lot for the citizens of Edge. I believe she can do good here and for the company as well.”
With a nod, Rufus focused on her now. “Welcome to our headquarters, not much as you can see.. but we are starting out fresh, after all.” A small smile formed.

Honestly, this was just a tad too close to the kinda shit that went down in Avengers town for her liking, except, they were like, the Anti-Avengers? Watching Reno out of the corner of her eye, she held back the urge to let out a soft sigh, “you’re just like Clint.” The penny dropped. That was why she’d said yes. The attitude, the cockiness. Yeah, that was Clint all over.

Trying not to second guess her choices, all she could do was sit and walk, she had never felt so much like the odd wheel in her life. Truth was, she didn’t really know what it was she was meant to say, or what they actually wanted. Even the introduction felt a little odd, but she stood up, offered a small nod of her head, it felt like the polite and more formal thing to do. This might be another world but she had her manners.

“I…” she tried to wave the comment from Rude off, she had done a lot for people? It wasn’t her intentions. It was just…what Kate did. That was it. “I um…” a small rise of her finger, like she was about to point out some kind of inaccuracy in his statement, but the conversation had already moved on.

“Oh-um, thanks.” She glanced around quickly, before offering him a small shrug of her shoulders. “I’ve seen, much worse headquarters believe me.” Kate offered a smile, she was missing out the point that normally she was raising them and arresting people, but still, point was valid. “Though I gotta ask – why in the universe am I here, I don’t know what I can do to help you. I mean – it’s not like I’m doing anything wondrous, I help kids find lost dogs and you know, other lost things.”
