‘Inside the Shadow (W. Metals)’ by Burning Star Core I was relistening to Prurient’s Factmag mixtape (which is really good btw) http://www.factmag.com/2011/07/18/fact-mix-266-prurient/ today while I worked. This is the last track on it. It was probably my introduction to drone, or it was at least the drone track that made the genre snap into my head and suddenly make sense. I’ve endured many a cold, windy day since listening to stuff like Burning Star Core.

BSC is da bomb!

Dang, I knew these were some of the things he was doing, but it’s still fascinating watching him break down his approach. Also, I got excited when he was talking about ostinatos and likened his sax to a synth bassline.

Artist Evan Holm is convinced that ‘there will be a time when all tracings of human culture will dissolve back into the soil under the slow crush of the unfolding universe’.

To demonstrate these rather dark thoughts, he created a submerged record player that’s still producing a nearly perfect audio as demonstrated in the short video below.

Before I continue, I think this piece is really cool and interesting.

Playing the vinyl wet isn’t SO wild. Some stylii were designed for wet play, though you don’t see it very often. My old Thorens turntable has separate anti-skate weighting instructions for wet and dry play.

Room description and DJ guidelines

This is the description for the Amon Tobin to Zeni Geva room on plug.dj.  For those that love it weird and usually loud!

(TL;CR? At least scroll down and read the bold parts below, or don't bitch when you get kicked offstage! #1 rule - don't play stuff where its mostly about the lyrics!)

Facebook group link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/290213787655333/

We love atypical electronica, noise, non-commercial metal and rock, fat beats n breaks, power electronics/noise, alternative hip-hop, and especially experimental shit. And lots of other stuff too. If it doesn't fit into a genre and other rooms don't like it, we probably do! (see below though). We prefer lyrics (if any) in foreign languages or otherwise performed in ways we can't understand. Because most good musicians aren't poets, to put it mildly. And its nice to get a break from constant narrative. Vocals with English lyrics that blend into the music are much better than ones that dominate or contrast with it. Failing that, abstract lyrics are much better than literal ones.

The room does vary quite a bit with the DJs, so it can change radically from day-to-day or even hour-to-hour. Try not to inflict your tastes on everyone if they are into something else (duh.) Look at the playlist before DJing, and listen for a bit if nothing seems familiar. Originals: One per day, subject to the quidelines above, and keep it short.

IF people shower you with praise, go ahead and play another. If you start playing a lot of originals, expect some criticism! If people aren't nodding, take a hint!

Don't just come here to play originals, as that is just fucking rude. If you don't like the music we play, the feeling is likely mutual.

Ask before playing tracks > 15 minutes. The answer will likely be yes, but people might ask you to wait so they can play something short first.

DJ GUIDELINES: Ironically, to be most inclusive its easier to say what we DON'T want in the room... We like most genres of music, but we FORBID the following outright: ******************************** Commercial Country/Western Broadway Showtunes, musicals Smoov Jazz, R&B, soul or anything else that might be deemed Smoov... Nickelback and other shite corporate rock Teen idols and pop divas

John Williams and other pop classical, including video game tracks

Novelty tracks of less than stellar musical value

Any song that says the word "Baby" more than twice

Pretty much anything else sappy!!! Play any of the above and you'll be treated like the troll you probably are. ******************************** Not to diss the following, but they are really NOT in the spirit of the room, where the music should be dominant and not the words: Singer/Songwriter Old school, "real" C/W, folk Straight-up Rap/Hip-Hop when the lyrics are the focus Plenty of other fine rooms to play it in on TT!

It should also go without saying that SPOKEN WORD is generally not welcome here. If you want to play a piece with a long monologue in it, please ask first!

******************************** We also very much discourage these: Dubstep - especially Brostep!! Overplayed electronica DJ/producers  Any industrial/Oontz played to death in the Industrial rooms, esp. Combichrist, Suicide Commando, Grendel.  Rock & Metal often heard on the radio or popular rooms on TT. Any song that says "Niggah" more than five times, unless in an ironic context. House, trance, psy, techno, and oontzies with 4/4 and consistant BPM. Yawn. Metal with clean singing - especially in English Conventional Jazz and Classical. (Sick and Twisted jazz and classical - stuff that would scare the genre rooms - are generally loved.) The above MIGHT be OK if they are TRULY exceptional - but ask first

If you play dubstep, psy, trance, house etc without asking, and its what you would find in a genre room - you will be lamed out and/or kicked offstage.

When playing exceptional but well-played artists like AFX, NIN or Amon, try to play remixes or rarities whenever possible. Tracks not in the TT/Medianet library are especially good!

******************************** If its truly genre bending it will probably be liked, if not loved. (If its not sappy.)
