She was sinking, falling, deeper and deeper into this vast sea of darkness.
He was already at the bottom, alone in the abyss of hopelessness.
Until he looked up and saw her, falling, falling, falling towards him. She was sinking, sinking, sinking into the depths of despair. Slowly, almost reverently, he held out his arms and she floated gently down into them. He was struck by the irony of this, that the most powerful and loved of them all could fall to his level. He, the most powerful and most hated. She was a deity that emanated love and acceptance. It mattered not. She would soon learn the art of hate.
“You’ve fallen from grace, great Fairy Queen,” he said. “You are no longer a creature of light. You are like me, a resident of the dark. A monster with no place to run and no home on this earth. You are among the unloved now.”
Titania, the great, the mighty, the infallible, Erza Scarlet looked up into the crimson eyes of her companion, and felt despair overtake her. How could it be that she’d fallen? All she’d ever wanted to do was to protect her comrades. To protect them, to be with them, to love them. How had she fallen, knowing that her desires had only been pure. As if he read her thoughts- perhaps he could, the mighty Titania had no idea of the true powers of the black mage currently supporting her in his arms- the hated man spoke.
“Your lamentation is not a unique one. I too, only had the purest intentions before my fall. I, like you, fell for love. Unfortunately for you, love will not be enough to preserve your light in this infernal abyss. Give up now, Fairy Queen, there is no hope. Once you’ve fallen to my level, there is no chance of redemption.”
Erza’s eyes widened, but she still made no move to escape the arms of her new acquaintance. She could feel his words resonate through her soul, her mutilated, blackened soul, and she could feel their truth. However, she hardened her eyes and glared up at him.
“You are wrong. We are nothing alike. I will return to my family. I will escape this hell.” Zeref sighed, unsurprised. He gazed down, almost pityingly, and knew that her attempts would be futile. Her stay here was eternal, and he only had to wait until she accepted this bleak reality. He was immortal, after all, and he would be there to experience her descent into madness, as well as the descent of all those who followed her.
Such was his curse, the curse of those who dared to love.
