BOTTLEBRUSH

 In the dusty heat

of a Melbourne summer afternoon

red spikes flare in the street,

brush vermilion on azure.

Sunlight sears the edges

of everything, metal gates

burn to the touch,

the air holds its breath.

 In the cool clay evening

of autumn blush and caress,

your hands slide over me,

your fingers, as they

brush my face,

are softly serrated

like bottlebrush leaves.

Three haiku

Two burnished fish held

in rushing water arms. One

leaps aside to swim.

Pink fluff rises to

strong stem, silken fronds spring out.

Galah feather lost.

Grey-brown moth brushed with

silver fur turns to show her

red striped petticoat.

this is no pop song

send me

wagtails and wrens fluff feathers

bury beaks in the water

as they preen and double dip

rainbows float in the wet spray.
