Could We Begin Again? Pt 8

The shadow couldn’t get it out of his mind. They way her lips were pulled into a frown, how her nose slightly twitched, the way her hands seemed to clutch the folds of her dress as her eyes barely shimmered within the light… of course, she wasn’t doing those things now… so why was he still focused on that look she held just moments before? 

It wasn’t natural. Before the small shadow met this lady, moments seemed to slip out of mind the instant they entered. Nothing seemed to matter and neither did knowing nothing. True, he had retained some useful information.  For instance, eating the fruit and nuts that grew on the trees helped keep his tummy from aching. And the importance of staying within all shadows when the burning light rose from the nearby distance forest certainly remained. So why was it important that the nice lady’s fleeting look of despair remain within as well? It didn’t seem as important as the fact that he can’t play outside the boundaries of the shadows around him… yet, something kept screaming within to keep her sad figure memorized.

With a frustrated sigh the creature pouted, more confused than ever. In fact, he was so confuzzled by these cursed thoughts that he didn’t even notice that he had blindly followed the strange lady in question right inside the giant castle! Strange smells of sweet and tang filled his nose and for a brief moment, the shadow was distracted with the gnawing ache increasing in his tummy as he gave a pitiful whine of anticipation.

Every so often, as Minnie made the gentle trek across the field to the great doors of her castle, she looked back to ensure the strange creature was following her.  She caught flashes of it lurking in the shadows, sticking to trees and rocks and even her own if there was no nearby shade.  It reminded her of a small cat the way it clung to her heels, and it almost relieved the heaviness of her stomach and the tightness of her chest.

Of course, there were few things that could alleviate that kind of pain.  Minnie wandered through the front gates, giving a small smile and wave to the vigilant guards before beginning to stroll through the long, bright hall.  She knew she’d have to speak with the captain of the guards to increase security around the kingdom before the day was out; having exiled criminals show up at this point in time with everything else going on was especially worrying.  But the pitiful whine reminded her she had other duties to attend to first and a smile pulled at the Queen’s lips as she turned down a corridor to the kitchen.

“Hungry?” she asked the shadow over her shoulder as she opened the door to the castle’s kitchen.  The cook was startled at the sudden noise, but her troubles were put at ease once the Queen came into view.  “Good afternoon,“ Minnie said, “We wouldn’t happen to have any extra fruit, would we?“

“ Thank you so very much for taking me under your wing. I….don’t know anything about this whole royal business let alone how to address everyone properly!” She flushed and looked at her feet and fiddled with her fingers before timidly looking at her from behind auburn lashes. “ I’ve heard so much about you from the little time I’ve been around everyone. I definitely can’t wait for our own little training sessions. I want to be the best person let alone princess I can be.”

Kairi’s eagerness was definitely something to admire.  Her willingness to learn, as well as her general kindness, put the Queen’s mild apprehensions at ease.  She had never had an apprentice before, but considering how open Kairi was already being, Minnie knew things would go well.

“And I’ve heard an awful lot about you.  I’m sure you’re gonna be amazing,” the Queen replied with a smile before standing a little straighter, “Now, why don’t we get goin’?  There’s no point in sitting around in a huge audience chamber when there’s work ta be done!”

     “Yeah… the King and Riku have me training like crazy!” His lip turned out in a pout at the thought. “Riku hardly lets me take a break.”

“Oh, I’m sure,” the Queen replied with a gentle laugh, “You need to keep up your training, after all.”

“Minnie? Ya around?” The mouse wondered the endless hallways of the castle until he peered through the inner castle walls where the garden lay. There, he could see the small yet beautiful figure of his wife tending to the flowers.

“Keepin’ busy?” He asked casually with a mischievous grin- he hasn’t been home in months and leapt at the chance to surprise her.

It wasn’t like she needed to tend the flowers, now that she thought about it.  The castle servants were quite adept at taking care of the gardens, but there was something therapeutic about pulling weeds and watering blossoms that always put the Queen’s mind at ease.

The silence was broken so suddenly that Minnie nearly dropped her watering can in surprise, but the familiar voice pulled a smile to her lips as she turned.  “As busy as I can be,” she replied slyly, holding a trowel out to her husband, “Well, are ya gonna help me?”
