The ability to seduce is oftentimes seen as a gift, a natural-born talent that only a few people possess. However, it is nothing but a sophisticated artform invented by women, using their persuasion and the man’s desire for sex to impose an indirect and psychological, yet very powerful hold on them. In fact, it’s pointless to resist seduction, for people yearn to be part of a mind game, separated from their normal routines, and experiencing the thrill of the unknown. Such everyday life mundanities in Suh Enterprises will never be the same.
- Based on 'The Art of Seduction' by Robert Greene -
"Never has a woman been in such complete mastery of another's heart."
From early on in life, the Beauty is gazed at by others. Their desire to be looked at is the source of their power, but also the source of much unhappiness: if they are honest with themselves, they also sense that being worshiped only for one's appearance is monotonous and unsatisfying—and lonely. When their mind and soul are being appreciated, they will grow dependent.
“You are all soul when you want to be, when you feel it, take me far away from my body.”
What separates Novices from ordinary innocent young people is that they are fatally curious. Finding their innocence a burden, they long to be initiated into the ways of the world. Everyone sees them as so sweet and innocent, but they know this isn't so—they cannot be as angelic as people think them.
"You are the constant object of my thoughts; my imagination exhausts itself in guessing what you are doing." A prude is someone who is excessively concerned with appearances, with what society considers appropriate and acceptable behavior. New Prudes are secretly oppressed by their correctness and long to transgress. Once you open them up they may overwhelm you. They are simply asleep, waiting to be awakened.
“Though I fear neither God nor devil, when I am in (her) presence I am ready to tremble like a child, and (s)he could make me go through the eye of a needle to throw myself into the fire.”
The Rogues have lived the good life and experienced many pleasures. On the outside, they tend to seem cynical and jaded, but their worldliness often hides a sentimentality that they have struggled to repress. They have tamped down their own romantic tendencies for so long that when it bursts forth, they lose control.
“It is the first time in my life such a thing has happened to me. I have made up my mind, so long as you are here, to do all you wish. My fancy for you is, after all, only a passing madness."
The Professors' minds are overdeveloped and overstimulated. Even when they talk about love or sex, it is with great thought and analysis. Underneath their intellectual strength lie gnawing insecurities; deep down they long to be overwhelmed by someone with a physical presence. They would like to escape their mental prisons, they would like pure physicality.
"Late in the night we enjoy a misty moon. There is nothing misty about the bond between us."
The problem with Crushed Stars is that at one point in their lives they did find themselves the center of attention, yet those days are gone. They suddenly receive some attention in a social setting, and it makes them glow; a little wine in the system, and they become effervescent. The reward of seducing Crushed Stars is the powerful emotions that are stirred up.
“The cultivation of the pleasures of the senses was ever my principal aim in life.”
What marks the Sensualists is not their love of pleasure but their overactive senses. Sometimes they show this quality in their appearance, but sometimes it is more subtle: because they are so sensitive, they are often quite shy, and they will shrink from standing out or being flamboyant. What the Sensualist lacks is precisely enough sensual experiences to appreciate and relish.
"The most attractive women, are women full of maternal love.”
Some people refuse to grow up. Perhaps they are afraid of death or of growing old; perhaps they are passionately attached to the life they led as children. Disliking responsibility, they struggle to turn everything into play and recreation. The Aging Baby does not want competition, but an adult.
“Love brings to light a lover's noble and hidden qualities— his rare and exceptional traits: it is thus liable to be deceptive as to his normal character.”
Powerful people are treated differently, and this has a big effect on their personalities: everyone around them tends to be fawning and courtierlike, to have an angle, to want something from them. This makes them suspicious and distrustful, but do not mistake the appearance for the reality: Lonely Leaders long to be seduced, to have someone break through their isolation and overwhelm them. Succeed and great power can be gained in turn, for in their loneliness they will come to fall dependent.
