Real talk here for a second. I work in computing professionally and it bothers me when I see these posts upsetting people, so I’d like to talk about it.

The majority of Tumblr users will have what is known as a ‘dynamic IP’, something given to them by the provider of their internet service. This is true regardless of where you are in the world. This will allow someone who has your IP address to use geolocation to find your internet service provider, but does NOT reveal your physical address or personal details. If you happen to live in the same city as your ISP and someone says “hey you live in such-and-such” and it is correct, it does NOT mean they know your actual address!

Some people make the conscious choice to have a ‘dedicated IP’, which is specifically assigned to you. This will NOT reveal your physical address or personal details either - these details are safeguarded by your internet service provider. If you do not know whether or not you have one, you probably do not. Ask the person responsible for your internet service at home or contact your internet service provider for more information about this if you’re concerned.

If you have a dedicated address (and for a limited time, it may be possible to use a dynamic address, but these change frequently), this can IN A VERY LIMITED SENSE be used to remotely probe the network you are connected to. A sophisticated and dedicated attacker MAY discover a way in but will then need to additionally find a way of accessing your computer - and your run-of-the-mill hacker is HIGHLY UNLIKELY to have the skills, software, time and dedication to do this on completely random people with little chance of securing anything of financial gain.

Let me re-iterate, someone having your IP address does NOT mean you have been compromised in some fundamental way and does NOT pose an immediate threat to you. It does in no way make it EASY for people to gain access to your computer, much less gain control of it or access any of your details stored on it.

This post is correct in advising caution, but know the facts before you decide to leave Tumblr, go on hiatus or make other decisions. Many websites on the internet are capable of collecting the IP address of their visitors for statistical purposes and it’s possible that is how these are being harvested - if they know your IP address, it does not automatically mean you are under threat.

I don’t have many followers, but I encourage who I do have to reblog this. I am also happy to take asks, anon or otherwise, to provide further information.

Some people are going around and blaming Anonymous for the raids, saying their computers will shut down and that people might come after them. Here are facts to put your minds to rest. Anonymous only attacks organizations that violate a human right, if that organization attacked first, or if that organization acts against their ideals.

Anonymous makes an announcement prior to the attack that they will be attacking that organization

They may not be organized, but they do have one thing that unifies them, and that is their ideals.

Ideals such as;

Freedom of information Free speech. Unregulated internet. No criminal activity for financial benefit Mischief.

M.O.D. actually has respect for Anonymous. Tumblr is too small for them to care about. You don’t really need to fear for your personal safety, this isn’t the work of Anonymous, it’s just the work of people being mean for the sake of being mean.

Although annoying, you can calm down a little bit. This raid is going against Anonymous’s ideals, so their wizardry isn’t part of this. This is below Anonymous.

Stay calm.

With the recent 4chan attack, M.O.D. and Momma have been FLOODED with asks about people scared and wanting to defend themselves.

Here are some basic things to do to defend yourself!

AVOID THE TAGS People are posting explicit and gory content and tagging them popular things so that people will see them. It seems that most tags aren’t safe- fandom tags, social justice tags, and lots of other tags are affected. Just avoid looking at tags until things calm down.

TURN OFF YOUR ASK, FANMAIL, AND SUBMISSIONS This one is the easiest and the most effective- they can’t get to you if they can’t get to you.

BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR SELFIES Some people are photoshopping user’s faces onto pornographic images. If you see yourself or someone you know in this situation, screenshot it. Record it and alert the proper authorities. this is highly illegal behaviour, especially if you’re a minor.

CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD Some people are scared about being hacked.

This is a little self-explanatory.

USE AN IP PROXY SERVICE This is only if you’re extremely afraid, but it is a safe way to keep your identity safe.

IF YOU MUST, STEP AWAY FROM YOUR ACCOUNT You can either simply just stay away from tumblr for a while, or you can make a temporary secondary account if you’re afraid your first will be attacked.

IGNORE THEM. JUST IGNORE THEM.

Stay safe, and don’t fan the flames. Don’t go too crazy, they’re not worth your attention. The most you can do, if you want to, is to flag and report the offending blogs and posts to hopefully keep other people safe.

M.O.D. has a high threshold for things like this, and will report as many as he can.

BE CAREFUL. AVOID THE LINKS If you’re very easily triggered, don’t click links on tumblr today. None. Some of the spammers are using a bait and switch tactic- using links masquerading as other things, such as fandom things and even pretending to be comforting places- and filling them with gore.
