Every Literary Reference Gale Makes When Selected in BG3 (That I Could Find)

"Oh, what a tangled Weave we web!" -

A play on words referencing the famous quote, "Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive," from Sir Walter Scott's poem "Marmion."

"What fools these mortals be." -

A quote from William Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream," spoken by the character Puck.

"All the world's my stage and you're just a player in it." -

A reference to the famous Shakespearean line, "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players," from "As You Like It."

"No rest for the wicked" -

A phrase that originates from the Bible Isaiah 48:22 There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked.

"To hold the world in the palm of one's hand" -

I believe this is a reference to this part of the poem Auguries of Innocence by William Blake: To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour.

"'Doth thy mirror crack?' Apparently not." -

I was so sure this was a quote from some Shakespearean play but nope lol. This is a Waterdhavian phrase that was mentioned in a DnD companion book at some point.

"Seek and you shall find me." -

From the bible. Specifically Matthew 7:7–8 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: for every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

The path less travelled. -

A reference to Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken," which includes the line, "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by."

"Creator. Destroyer." -

This is a reference to the Lord Krishna's words in the Bhagavad Gita. O Arjuna, I am the creator, maintainer and destroyer of all created objects, such as the sky. Of all knowledge I am knowledge of the self, and in logical debate I am vāda, the philosophical principle that asserts the conclusive truth.

"A rough tempest I will raise" -

I found the explanation behind this quote from a reddit post: "Shakespeare - Tempest, - this is a mash-up of two quotes: In Act V, Scene 1, Prospero uses the phrasing "when first I raised the Tempest". In the same scene, he recites a soliloquy about the great works of magic he has accomplished, before finally renouncing magic altogether: " … But this rough magic I here abjure" https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/comments/17uher2/literary_references_in_gales_selection_remarks/ (this person came to the same conclusions as me for many of the prior quotes but I only used their post for this one haha)

I almost certainly missed a few! If there are any others please feel free to reblog and add them!

You can't convince me Gale wasn't totally advertising himself as marriage material throughout the entirety of his romance. He's got a tower. It's got a great kitchen and a wine cellar. He can cook. He'll formally introduce you to Tara over a nice dinner. His mother will love you. And after so many years of the bar being in the pits of hell for irl men I fell for that shit hook, line, and sinker. Feel his shirt that smells like a library. It's husband material.

What's crazy is the way that success makes you kinder to yourself.

I've lost 6lb now in 2 weeks. Knowing the number is going down makes my goals feel achievable. My goals feeling achievable makes me want to do other things, like take care of my skin and my hair. Do my makeup. Wear nicer clothes.

It snowballs. But why don't I feel like I'm worth taking care of if I can't control my weight? What is that all about...

Avatar

I don't have a lot of places to vent so I'm like, screaming into the void here.

I finally started losing some weight but I feel so demotivated by the fact that I am still the heaviest I've ever been. If I'd have been able to do this months ago I wouldn't have gotten to this point.

I want nothing more than to be thin. I've never been thin in my life.

Right now I'm 87kg down from 90kg, and I need the number to keep going down for my sanity. I ate stuff I shouldn't have eaten today and I just feel guilty. I can still make today's calorie goal but why did I make it harder for myself.

I've got so far to go. I want to fit into the pants I bought months ago before I got this big. I can't believe I was getting close to 200lb.

I feel sick today and it's making it harder to stick to the new diet. It's not unhealthy, it's perfectly reasonable but I'm addicted to snacking and when I feel bad it makes me want to snack even more. I need to stop eating my feelings.

Hello! Hope youre having a great day! I absolutely love how you draw clothing and how varied the layers and folds are, where do you usually take refs from? I havent found any good resources to reference from sadly, was wondering if you good help. Cheers!

there are like... two basic things to always keep in mind. or at least i keep them in mind...

cheat trick: draw the seams! its basically contour for your clothes. it gives more structure and detail by default. you can do like a simple line, or do like a striped line. or you go the extra mile to do a pattern stich.

Triangles Rule! clothes have a this habit of falling in triangles. like there is a Fix-point that holds the cloth and then it spreads out, usual in a triangular structure. depending how tight it is pulled the triangles get tighter, or wider when the garment is just draped draping over the body. how much into detail you want to do depends on each artist.

fix-points wher most the fold and details happens is usualy where we have our joints. elbow, knees, armpit ect.

my references are more for inspiration as to what the characters are wearing rather then how to draw the fold. though... i struggle lots with hoods but in that case i just google "hoods" and tada! dozen and dozen of references. thick hoods slim hoods. pulled up pulled down.

about layering clothing... i do in fact just... layer them? like i have my thumbs of course where its all like mixed toghether in one. but if i feel like it i take the time to go through each layer and to figure out how the clothing interact. or like... i can like this see the clothes underneath more clearly in case i need them? ha i make my own dress up dolls somehow hahah hm...

which is fun to me. because lets say it it suddenly hot or getting cold the character has some variation? uhm... i have more doodeled out. this are just few i have finished and... urgh one day i will continue figuring these guys out... anyway this was a lot. uhm... thanks for reading this far? hope this helped
