Galavant has made a name for himself. He did not get it because of his background. He did not get it because of nobility or royalty. He strived to become the best he could, unlike his friends, who only cared for wealth & women. He learned, he studied, and in time, he became the best knight there ever was within the Five Kingdoms.  He has a right to feel the way he does. He not only was at the top of his game, but he let the one thing he vowed never to do get to him. He vowed never to let a woman get in between him and his goals. Carnal sins would not be his major downfall. He would rise above and become the greatest there ever was and he did. That is exactly what he became. But soon enough his past crept back up to Him and he fell. He fell hard.  He let that sin creep into his heart and thus his love for Madalena bloomed. It's not that he thought he could never love. It's that he never thought love would ever govern his actions. So when love became his downfall, it broke him. He's been bested in fights. He's slain dragons, but got his ass handed to him by pillagers. Losing is not a new thing to him because all good people win some and lose some. It is life. But he has NEVER allowed love to break him so when it did, he not only broke him, but shattered him into a million pieces.  This journey is more than just getting the girl back. He wants to mend what was broken. He wants to gain back what he lost. He has to overcome his love to be the man he used to be. The man he fought long and hard to be.
