I still find it hilarious that Zero was talked up as being more diverse than the original, but they put so little effort into the character work that the only indication that any of them are minorities is the voice actor.
Meanwhile the characters made by a bunch of mostly-white gamer dudes in 2003, managed to have:
- Sarge, a veteran with PTSD who is either bisexual or violence-sexual and not fussy about the physical sex of who is doing the violence.
- Grif, who is Hawaiian and into men.
- Simmons, who is bisexual, part-Irish, and has a bunch of prosthetics.
- Donut, who is gay and probably deaf in one ear.
- Doc, who is black and has DID.
- Tucker, who is black and a single father.
- Caboose, who has brain damage.
- Wash, who has brain damage twice.
- Kaikaina, who is Hawiian and pansexual.
- Carolina, who is probably Jewish.
- Church, who is a depressed, bisexual Jewish robot with so many mental traumas that his traumas actually became different people, with Church himself left stunted both emotionally and physically by the loss of those aspects of himself.
Church alone is arguably more diverse than Shatter Squad.
