A-Level Maths

@alevelmaths / alevelmaths.tumblr.com

Hello, my name's Lizzie, and this is a blog to help you with all things mathsy, specifically tailored for OCR A-Level Mathematics. If you have any questions, maths related, blog related, anything, don't hesitate to send me an ask ^^

Hi! How much do you think taking the OCR Free Standing Maths Qualification will help with ALevel maths? (Currently in year 11 and picking options soon)

VERY HELPFUL! I did this and it’s basically all the difficult things from C1 and C2, which means it’s pretty tough compared to GCSE but it is so so helpful, I slept through most of my C1 and C2 lessons because of it. Highly recommend :) Good luck with it all!

Dear Diary,

I started going on tumblr again after several days with little activity. There is a frog on a unicycle now. He is not the smiling frog or the frog sipping tea. He is a new frog. Every day is a new gift.

I’m honestly terrified of this post??

i stuck a lemon in the microwave and it fuckign exploded and i will do it again

Hi. I got low marks in AS and A2 math. I did P1 P3 S1 and M1. Should I pick C1 and C2 instead of P3? Can you list them according to difficulty ? Thanks!

Hi there! Thank you for your question :) I'm afraid I can't help you with this one, it sounds like we did different exam boards as I never had any P modules! Best of luck for A2

Dear all,

It’s now been a year since I finished my A Levels, and for this reason I am no longer able to provide hugely in-depth or general tips/advice about the A Level Maths course, simply because I’m no longer fully immersed. As my degree is largely maths based I am still “maths-current” so I can still answer questions you send through to me or questions about maths in general, but specific tips about A Level are no longer my forte. Feel free to ask and I’ll do my best but I can’t promise to be overly helpful in that respect. Keep sending your questions through, and very best of luck for the forthcoming exams!

So I moved house and need to start year 12 again, I did psychology economics and history. This year I was thinking of picking maths, psychology and biology, would it be wise for me to do maths even though I haven't for a whole year ? Any tips ?

Ultimately that depends how confident you were about maths when you did gcse. If maths just came naturally to you and you enjoyed it then getting back into it shouldn’t be a problem at all. It’s been a year now since I did any A Level maths so I’m fairly rusty at certain things, but I know I could get back into any of it if I needed to very quickly. It also depends how much of a challenge you’d like. Personally, I’d say it’s very doable :) I don’t have any general tips to offer (AS level was three years ago for me now!) but if you have any more specific questions I’m happy to try to explain. Good luck with it all!

Hi there! Do you have any info or tips on FP3 or D2?? Your tags aren't working :(

Avatar

Hi there! I don’t know when you sent this, but I hope it reaches you still relevant. I didn’t do D2 so I can’t offer any advice there I’m afraid. It’s also over a year now since I did FP3, so while I could happily help with any questions or explaining something specifically, any general advice I had has long left my brain. Just doing every past paper you can get your hands on is generally the thing to do, but I’m sure you know that. The tags don’t work for those two as no one has ever asked about them so there’s simply nothing tagged as those modules! I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful but if you have any more specific questions I’m sure I could lend a hand. Good luck!

Just wondering, do have any unusual maybe even unorthodox revision tips? FYI I've just started AS Maths, Further Maths and Physics.

Awesome subject choices! I'm sorry to say my revision methods were pretty standard, details of which can be found in this post: http://alevelmaths.tumblr.com/post/113013942919/just-a-quick-question-how-are-you-meant-toSorry I can't be more helpful! If anyone wants to share alternative revision methods in a reblog or message, please do!

Hey!

To everyone just starting AS Level, welcome! I hope I can make your A Level maths just that bit nicer for the next two years :)

And to everyone returning for A2, let’s smash this motherfucker.

A little update on me: I’ve finished my A Levels! I got AAAAA at AS in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Latin, and I got A*A*A* in A2 Maths, Further Maths, and Physics. I’m off on Saturday to study Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial College London. Life is good.

We’re officially into term time now so I guess this is just a reminder that I am here for you guys, whatever you need, message me any time :) :)

Hi, I am in year 9 but I've started learning derivatives and integrals (and such so I can be ahead) but I'm going all over the place and need help, it's sorta hard and I have no one who can help. Can you suggest a guide or something for me to follow so I'm not randomly learning random topics. P.S I'm from Australia and I absolutely adore your tumblr!

Hiya!

Sorry for the late reply I’ve been really busy prepping to go to uni.

I guess you’re looking for an online course or a book then. When I was doing maths at secondary school I just used what my school gave me, which at your level was this book  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Extended-Mathematics-IGCSE-David-Rayner/dp/019914785X and I used a website called MyMaths which was excellent and I recommend but you can only use it if your school buys it which sucks. I don’t know about the availability of that book in Australia tbh seeing as it’s for a British qualification, but you could get something that’s for the equivalent Aussy qualification? Or having had a quick google, this website looks like it may be of use https://alison.com/learn/maths. Or I could send you a list of topics you could work through?

And of course, if there’s a topic you’d like to talk about or a question you want to discuss, drop me a message and I’ll be happy to answer :)

It’s so impressive and inspiring to see you going out there teaching yourself extra maths, you’re awesome, keep at it!

And thank you! I’ll do my best to keep it active and updated x

Hey! Do you have any tips for starting M1?

Hi there!

I have a little advice I could impart, yes ^^

First off, if you’ve done AS physics (AQA definitely but presumably other exam boards too) you will have a strong foundation for M1 which will be helpful. I hadn’t already done AS physics, I did them at the same time, and I managed alright all the same so no worries if you haven’t :)

For the most part of M1 you’ll be looking at systems and working out what they’re going to do (qualitatively and quantitatively). What really helped me with this is really thinking about the system before I started the calculations... let me explain what I mean by “really thinking”. Unless you’ve lived in a dark room all your life you have seen how the laws of physics affect reality; how friction reduces the acceleration of a moving object, how when a ball is thrown it makes a parabola shape in the air, how a ruler will fall off your finger unless supported evenly about its centre of gravity. Use your instincts that you have built up over your whole life to try and work out what the system will do before you even put pen to paper. This skill won’t come straight away - it takes practice - but if you can get your head round it you will have a huge understanding advantage when tackling a question! My teacher always reminded us of this with the words “you’ve got to see the matrix” (that may go over your head if you haven’t seen the film but oh well).

I’d also say that if you like rote learning, M1 is probably not the module for you. Almost every question you encounter will require a slightly different approach. Of course there are basic methods for working things out that you have to learn but these methods must be applied in different ways - you need to see the matrix and then figure out how to apply what you know.

Lastly, if your having trouble understanding a concept or want a hand with a question please drop me an ask! I will be doing an aeronautical engineering degree as of this October (grades permitting!) so I’ll be more than happy to lend a hand with mechanics :)

M1 is entirely different to anything in maths you’ll have done thus far, it’s a challenge but I for one found it really fun, and I hope you do to :D Message me again if you like if have any more questions x
