We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, ‘You can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise you will threaten the man.’ Because I am female, I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important. Now marriage can be a source of joy and love and mutual support. But why do we teach to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors – not for jobs or for accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing, but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are. Feminist: the person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes.

Why I need feminism: I need feminism because I cannot handle boys constantly saying “she’s on the blob” whenever a woman is aggravated. I need feminism because I do not wish to be applauded whilst I am walking down the street whilst wearing a playsuit that happens to reveal my cleavage. I am not a show. My breasts are not a sexual organ. I need feminism because I don’t wish to be wolf whistled at. I’m not a dog, I’m not inferior to you. I need feminism because of people still play “blurred lines” as well as people still making rape jokes, blaming the victim. I need feminism because there are a lot of women out there who do not agree with feminism purely because men won’t help them with their shopping or change their tyre. I need feminism because women around the world are getting abused by their husbands, boyfriends, friends and even strangers, not just sexually. I need feminism because once a nude photograph of a woman is released, she is slut-shamed. Rather than the person who has betrayed the woman’s trust, the woman gets the blame. Women are supposed to be hated. I need feminism because a nude photograph of a woman can ruin her career, whilst men who have their nude photographs released they are “praised.”
