The tentacles were surprising, but not enough to cause her to lose focus. Justinia had seen weirder things. Hell, she had done weirder things. Still, there were a few farmhands in her way. She drew her warhammer and for ready for battle. Each swing drew forth a bright white streak as the frost enchantment activated. Enemies were frozen with each strike. They would live, but they might have a few broken bones. The ones in tentacles squirmed and trashed around in an attempt to free themselves, to no avail.
All leading to the head farmer. He would not be surviving the onslaught. The farmer drew a large crossbow and aimed it at Justinia. The bolt missed the halfling, but struck her steed. The beast stumbled and fell, pinning Justinia underneath. “Help me out!” she called.

As the steed went down and it tumbled to the ground on top of Justinia Adakias surged forward. With a few of the farm hands at the farmer taking aim again he stopped just behind the steed and extended out his hands. From nowhere a burst of wind shot forward, knocking back some of the farm hands, but it was mostly directed at the farmer, who tumbled over, the particular arrow he was about to let loose skittering away from him.

He wasn’t the strongest, but as the rest were occupied he attempted to get the flaming horse off of Justinia enough for her to get free. He held it up with obvious strain, then looking to to her. “Hurry get up!” He called.

Justinia grabbed his collar and pulled him down suddenly. “Non. Lethally,” she insisted before letting him go and turning back to the fields around her. She had done a fair amount of study, enough to unlock her own magical capabilities. To conserve energy, she’ll start simple.
A bolt of fire lept from one hand, striking up a path of flames through the crops. Then another and another. Just as intended, the crops were going to burn down.

Adakias let out a small sound at being yanked down, but became quiet and stone faced at her words. He said nothing as she let go and turned to the fields again. His answer didn’t much change. He’d do his best, certainly. But if the need arose.

He kept his eyes on the farm house, only briefly looking back to the flames as the smell of the fire hit him finally and the smoke began to rise as it started to move and consume other parts of the fields. It wouldn’t be long now.

An alarm bell started to ring out from the barns and people started to come from the farm house. Numbers were hard to estimate, but Justinia had been assuming a dozen farm hands and the one farmer.

“Ready to see something really fucking cool?” she asked, a wide grin on her face. Suddenly, out of the ground erupted a spectral horse, with a name of fire and fangs for teeth. The halfling mounted her steed and spurred it onwards towards the crowd, aiming herself at the man in charge.

Adakias was on the verge of saying ‘what do you mean?’ He went wide eyed at the spectral horse appeared. He was awe struck a moment before shouting, “awesome!” as it went barreling towards the farm hands.

He brought up the rear. Following after the flaming horse he looked to the farm hands. Running a bit closer he got within a few yards before pausing and lifting his hands. Concentrating a moment he looked to the group of workers. After a moment a black inky patch materialized before them. Some managed to stop in time but others weren’t so lucky.

Black tentacles sprung forward, ensnaring a good few farm hands in their grip. Some attempted to fight their way free, but Adakias made sure to keep his concentration to hold those he captured.

It had been a hard struggle, but Arram had forced himself not to look at the boy’s face the whole not. He’d instead busied himself with finding kindling for the campfire. He let the light mostly die down during the night so they wouldn’t draw too much attention, but as the morning dawned cold Arram built it back up again. By the time Adakias woke up Arram had shifted, and was in the process of trying to scoot a fallen log back into the flames. Arram looked up as Adakias began to shift.
“Good morning,” he said. “You hungry? I’ve already eaten but we can stick around for a bit if you need time to get going.”

“I-uh-huh-uhm,” Adakias rubbed the sleep from his ‘eyes’, taking a second to briefly glance to the fire. “No no, I can eat while we’re walking, or, er, whatever we’re doing-wait uh, did you sleep?” He asked in a croaky still half asleep voice.

“You didn’t wake me,” he went on to explain, as if it really needed one. Had there been a point they were unguarded? That didn’t seem safe.

“ … I know as well that the Ancients do jack shit, but they at least sometimes do their studies. And some of them are older than dirt pretty much. So, if there was a way out, they’d have found it. I know, I’ve snuck in there a few times myself. “ Mostly for the same thing they were going to the Ancients now for. Cy was just as jaded as her newfound friend here, but she also knew how useless this quest truly was.
“ They’re not going to let me in there, “ She laughed loudly with surprise, “ The Ancients don’t let the grimy dirty soldiers in there. But… I can help you sneak in. “ After all, she’d done it a few times herself now.

“Well regardless i’d rather look for myself. Or even ask them myself. I have been asked to here by heavenly forces so maybe these Ancients need to get themselves in gear. Something is obviously paying attention to this place. So they need to do something.” Adakias was adamant that there had to be something someone could do. Or if anything, going through every avenue and getting nothing, maybe his angel would just drop it and they could move on.

“Alright, grimy dirty soldier, how do we get in then?” He asked, looking to her.

"Want to see a cool spell I learned?"
"People cant normally do that, can they?"
"Yeah right. Magic's not real."
"If I show you what I can do, will you keep it a secret?"
"What will you do? Turn me into a frog?"
"I'm not ashamed to admit I can do magic."
"What are you, some kind of witch/wizard?!"
"Yeah, I can cast spells. What about it?"
"Is that a spellbook or something?"
"Whatever you do, don't cast that on me!"
"Does that mean you're a warlock, then?"
"Can you teach me how to use magic?"
"I didn't know magic was real!"
"So how long have you been doing magic?"
"What kind of spells can you do?"
"Wow, you're actually a wizard/witch!"
"Leave me alone or I'll turn you into something nasty."
"Want to see something really cool?"
"What sorcery is this?!"
"How did you do that? It's like magic!"
"So, do you actually ride a broomstick, or is that a myth?"
"No. No, you can't ask me to turn you into something."

It took a long moment, full of the crackle of flames and the dance of light over their figures, for Arram to grunt in something like agreement. “Alright. Take your time.” He shifted in place again and gestured to the ground beside the fire, “Feel free to sleep, if you want. I’m not tired yet, I can stay up for a bit and keep watch.”

Adakias gestured to the spot in particular before nodding. “Alright,” he mumbled quietly ultimately scooting over to the place Arram had pointed. Getting himself as comfortable as he could be on the floor-using his bag as a pillow, unfurling a somewhat worn but fairly nice looking blanket-he curled up, back to the fire.

As sleep was starting to creep in he managed to get out, in a tired tone, “if you want me to keep watch after you sleep just wake me.” And it wasn’t long after that before he did eventually drift off.

Arram sent a half-hearted thumbs up at the kid, though he was uncertain if Adakias saw it. Whether he was asleep or whether his hood covered his eyes, either way it didn’t really matter. Arram would keep watch until the sun came up, and the kid could get a chance to rest.

Almost immediately it occurred to Arram that he could simply look under Adakias’ hood while he was sleeping and none the wiser. What was he hiding under there? Some deformity, like he said? Or was he a wanted criminal on the run? Arram had no place to judge either way. Throughout the night he struggled with the curiosity and with the knowledge he should respect the young man’s privacy.

Adakias was more keenly aware of himself being asleep then he usually was. Perhaps because he was waiting for something. Waiting for some sign from on high about his current predicament. But in true Pham fashion what he instead got was a feeling of uncertainty and a random image of a group of people that were had to make out or recognize. A real help all in all, not that Pham was usually crystal clear with him anyway.

None of it seemed directly pointed at Arram. As far as he could see. So maybe he could tell him. Hopefully. As morning approached Adakias groaned, shifting on the ground and giving a stretch. He glanced about after for Arram.

Justinia was all decked out in half plate armor with a battleaxe on one hip and a warhammer on the other. The longsword from the previous day was nowhere to be seen, but it had not been visible before she drew it before. “Equip yourself with whatever it is that you might need. Just get ready,” she said. There was a fire in her eyes, one that wasn’t there before. She was excited for the day. After all, it was a big day. Finally, they would be cleaning this town back to the way it should be.
“Hurry hurry hurry! We have big things today, don’t forget!”

“Alright alright alright,” Adakias said as he tugged on his clothes and cloak. He equipped himself with a few daggers and flipped through his spells before deciding, ultimately, he was going to be as ready as he physically could be.

Admittedly looking like he just woke up still he stepped out of his room and closed the door behind him. “Big things, I know.” He gave her a tired smile before nodding. “Let’s do this.”

Justinia grinned and started to move out of the inn, heading off towards the farm. The farm was on the outskirts of the town, crops full as the harvest had not yet hit the town. Unfortunately, there wouldn’t be a harvest at this farm.

“Okay. Cover me in a bit. I’m going to burn the fields, take out any farmhands coming. Non-lethally, if you can. We don’t know for sure that these people are directly involved in the trade,” she said and started to prepare for spellwork.

“I’ll do my best. If they get too physical with me though,” Adakias trailed off, figuring that was answer enough. He positioned himself to be facing away from Justinia and instead more towards the farm house itself.

He was more shoot to kill as far as spell casting went but he had a few tricks to keep them at bay. He extended his hands to his sides, readying his spells in case he saw anyone coming.

“Perhaps you should. History can be useless for the future. What if you’re being punished for something that was someone else’s years ago? Something that can be dealt with instead of just excepting it.” Adakias frowned a bit, crossing his arms. If he could help this place then he’d do it, and that seemed like a good place to start. “Where is the Ancient’s libraries?”

“ Listen, if the Ancients haven’t found a way to fix it, I doubt any of us are going to, “ Cy sniffed, rolling her eyes. When she was asked where the libraries were, she sighed once more before motioning with a nod of her head towards the edge of town.

“ In the Ancient’s building thing - the headquarters. But strangers are definitely not allowed in there. Mm-mmm. “

“Here is the thing you should know about any sort of higher beings that can literally do anything, they most of the time do absolutely nothing because they could really give less of a shit.” Adakias’ tone was plain if not personally miffed at the mentions of the Ancients. He knew first hand how little a celestial power of beyond could care about people’s plights.

He glanced in the direction she nodded before looking to her. “Oh. Well. Good thing you’re here then huh?” He grinned a bit towards her, crossing his arms. “Since you’re willing to do anything to protect your home you’d certainly want to do anything to make it better, right? So you’ll vouch for me, right?”

Avatar
“Oh….oh! Okay!” Adakias grinned brightly to her, an idea having crossed his mind. “Do you have any sort of records in this town? Or even a decent history book? There might be clearer clues in those kinds of things. If I need to talk to the Ancient ones then that might be a good place to start. I may also know a way to do it but I have to wait till i’m sleep.” Hopefully if he could directly contact his angel he could get a clear answer on how to talk to these Ancient ones.

“ Both of those would be in the Ancient’s libraries. There might be a history book in the Area, but… “ Cy shrugged, with a frown, “ I don’t know about that. I don’t know about any of that. I mean… we don’t really talk about history all that much. “ It didn’t really matter in the long scale of things. It didn’t make it easier to survive in the day to day aspects. It didn’t help when someone had a knife to your rib cages.

Just as she said she would, Justinia Shortankard went drinking. A lot. It was a wonder she didn’t get arrested that night, but she managed to get back to her room early enough to get a good night’s sleep. After all, the next day was too important to sleep through. She quickly made her way down to the front desk, found out which room Adakias was in, and went to knock loudly on his door. “Wake up! Time to get started!” she called, not caring about how loud she was being. In all truth, she might have still been a little drunk. But that was fine. She could fight well either way.

Adakias had gotten his room, got ready for bed, and let himself be consumed by numerous dreams. Some crystal clear some vague and foggy. He felt the presence of his angel in some of them, but it was hard to tell what he wanted. There was an air of warning, of caution, but he couldn’t delve in any deeper and before he knew it a loud knocking and an equally loud voice had him snapping awake.

“AHWHATI-OKAY,” Adakias scrambled up, practically tumbling out of bed before he was heading towards the door and tossing it open. Still half asleep he attempted to flatten down his bed head, clearing his throat. “Give me a few minutes to get ready.” He said turning back into the room to get dressed.
