St. Denis is the original cephalophore; a saint martyred by beheading who is depicted carrying their own head. It is said that after his head was cut off, St. Denis picked it up and walked several miles while preaching, then died at the end of his sermon.
The visual inspirations were statues that depict the Virgin Mary weeping, the statue of St. Denis at his basilica in France, and Hedy Lamarr’s star crown as worn in the movie Ziegfeld Girl (1941).
