You guys I just realized that what I’ve always wanted out of werewolf fiction is a story where lycanthropy isn’t a purely human condition

Like this dude wakes up from his wolfbender and his room is full of all these fucking chickens from local farms that he initiated into his pack. They all start clucking and crowing at the moon and when it’s full they all transform into these tiny little weird bipedal wolves with wings.

I don’t remember making this post but it’s going around again and I’m losing my shit

Imagine becoming a werewolf because you got attacked by a fucked up chicken

A wildlife rehab centre discovers that one of its patients is a lycanthrope when the full moon hits and their wolf transforms into a slightly different wolf.

in Disco Elysium I was expecting there to be some kind of “addiction mechanic” that would add a long-term downside to taking drugs, and was surprised not only by the absence of any such mechanic but also that the benefits of drugs greatly outweighed the cost. anyways fast forward to the late game and I was downing three bottles of pyrholidon and smoking an entire pack of cigarettes before attempting any check, and it was only then I realized there was in fact an addiction mechanic

honestly, i think this is why i like the way the game handles substances so much. when i was looking up playthroughs of disco elysium i stumbled across one subreddit thread where someone asked “gameplay wise, is there any point to staying sober?” and just looked at it. like, yeah. yeah, exactly. we know that harry often does drugs specifically so that he can take on a superhuman caseload - as he puts it to kim, to be a “really good detective”. it was so chilling to see a player asking the same exact question that harry would probably be asking himself. without an external punishment mechanic, without being heavy handed about it, and in a way that (as OP pointed out) is so natural as to be almost unnoticeable, it manages to put the player exactly in his shoes as a recovering (or not recovering) addict. it’s a really well-designed mechanic

“Things are harder without this substance, so there’s no reason for me to abstain” being a purely Player-Driven interaction is a phenomenal addiction mechanic. Absolutely fucking gorgeous.

my apologies if this has already been posted here but im sharing this. here is what someone said on twitter along w this image:

the central image text reads: “@everyone I HAVE BEEN RELIABLY INFORMED GUARDIAN JOURNALISTS ARE SNOOPING AROUND ASKING FOR TRANS PEOPLE TO TALK TO THEM ABOUT DIY HRT. THEY ARE PARTICULARLY LOOKING FOR UNDER-18S DOING DIY. SHOULDN'T NEED TO BE SAID, BUT DO. NOT. ENGAGE. SPREAD WIDELY. DO NOT ENGAGE. WE NEED THIS NOTICE SPREAD OUT VIA EVERY GRASSROOTS SUPPORT GROUP AND SOCIAL CIRCLE IN THE COUNTRY.

URGENT. IF THEY GET EVEN ONE TO TAKE PART IT BECOMES A NATIONAL CONVERSATION. TOP ALERT.

Guardian journos are apparently asking trans people about DIY. Trans followers: DO NOT SAY ANYTHING TO THEM. NOT A WORD.
I also know I’ve got cis mutuals who have written for the Guardian. Please know I’ve always thought less of you because of that.

reblogging to add the Trans Safety Network guidelines for media engagement

do not engage with the Guardian if you’re trans and a minor. do not speak with the Guardian on DIY HRT.

heck, unless the journalist is reputable and has a track record of good reporting on trans issues, do not speak with them about DIY HRT. seek out your local organisation if you are approached by a journalist.

I obviously can't verify the screenshot, but the guardian is a toilet, and the guidelines for media engagement posted are worth reading.

It's never worth engaging with an interviewer that has malicious intent. There's no good point you can make that they can't simply redact or spend an infinite amount of time figuring out how to spin in a negative. You've almost certainly seen some right wing interviewers who are so inept at this that they make themselves look bad, but even they're not worth the risk talking to. Their base does not care at best, and it'll help them at worst.

Oh hello,

Hot tip from your neighbor archivist, there is no greater lie than “don’t worry, I’ll remember”

No. You won’t. Write down who is in that photo. Note the date and event. Put a year on everything.

“But it is -insert person and/or event here- there is no way I will forget!”

1) WRONG. Years get murky, relationships fade, people change, family members look alike (especially when very old or very young)

2) even if you somehow do, the next generation has no idea who what where when or why.

This message brought to you by a very tired archivist who has spent days trying to find and ID 3 photographs at work and also deal with all her grandmother’s photos when her children can’t name their aunts and uncles let alone cousins.

I say this not just as an archivist, but as someone who regularly has to look up when she got married because I can’t remember.

(I got that engraved inside my spouse’s ring for a reason!)

That fuckin smile at the end

To the worried person in the comments:

No, a hummingbird’s heart will not stop if it stops moving. You’re possibly thinking of Spoink, which is a Pokemon that supposedly powers its heart by bouncing, and as such can’t stop moving. Hummingbirds don’t sit often because they’re busy looking for food, but they can and do sit. The females sit on eggs in nests, after all, and they do have to sleep.

Fun fact: the leg muscles of a hummingbird are so stripped down to save on weight that they cannot walk. They can step sideways along a branch or other perch, but they cannot go forward without taking flight.

However they absolutely do stop moving. In fact, hummingbirds hibernate! Overnight. Instead of sleeping. Because if they tried to sleep like a normal animal their hyperactive metabolism would mean that they starve to death before breakfast.

Unrelated fun fact: the primary Aztec god of war would take on the form of a hummingbird, and the souls of the bravest warriors were said to turn into hummingbirds in order to join him after death, presumably because every hummingbird is approximately four grams of pure concentrated asskicking which fears no man nor beast and will gladly throw down with somebody seventeen thousand times their size if offended.

this is a really cool post and i love seeing such a small bird but reading “No, a hummingbird’s heart will not stop if it stops moving. You’re possibly thinking of Spoink” killed me

It’s not just that the leaves will break down on their own (and enrich the soil while they’re at it!). During the winter, all sorts of insects use leaf litter for shelter, and they’re the first food available to larvae in early spring. Leaves also insulate the plants under them during the winter, which is important if you’re in an area prone to frost heaving.

One of the best thing you can do for native pollinators in your area is Leave the Leaves!

My mom stopped raking her leaves when she found out about this but her neighbor used his leaf blower to clear out her yard the first year she decided to try. So she started posting a Leave the Leaves sign in the yard each year with an explanation about why it’s good and two winters later only one house still rakes their lawn each year.

We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the biodiversity in the neighborhood since. We have birds that we haven’t seen since we moved into the city from living rurally and those birds are starting to nest in the trees and gardens in spring. The swallows and bats are back at night. The single woodpecker we would only occasionally see visits daily and even has a friend that has joined it. We have more squirrels and rabbits and shockingly fewer moles and voles. We heard an owl outside last fall.

Leave the leaves indeed.

me: oughghgh okay you gotta go OUT today and run errands like an adult, pick up prints, buy floss for the beans cross stitches you sell, maybe some groceries....

also me: oh 3pm's not that late! plenty of time to spend on a cross stitch project!

several hours later, it is already dark out:

me:..... shit.

(ty to @presidentdragon for a sentence that goes extremely hard)

also idk what the cheapest way to get this pattern out to yall would be is there like, a public drive folder somewhere where you can upload free pattern pdfs?

@tempestkwake has a good point i didn't realize kofi has a pay what you want option, so if you'd like the pattern for free, have at it!

for those who would like to do alterations, like @trippol-threat, here is the antialiased transparent png file

Image

okok so I've been putting this off for ages:

first, an update on my prototype of this pattern:

things that I have learned:

  • the blackish-brown and grey thread i chose to distinguish the bird wings has BARELY any contrast. the whole thing needs to be redesigned
  • the red and dark red on the ribbon-work doesn't contrast highly enough, it sort of just. sludges together? I need a darker red or maybe even a red-tinted brown
  • i'm attempting to use some of the blackish-brown as letter outlining to make up for the fact that I chose a metallic (and therefore pricier) floss
  • the auto-settings for uploading a cross stitch pattern based on existing art is uh, NOT GREAT

NOTES! GROUPINGS! SEPARATIONS! oh by god was it a mess. Some colours were so close I had to group them to make it make sense. others, such as the DMC 444, was trying to be both lemon yellow in the text gradient AND brownish straw in the goat itself so they needed separation.

I've remade the pattern stitch by stitch on a different maker. It's still available at the same pay-what-you-like link up there ^ but here's the NEW preview:

oh also i made the birds look more like jackdaws

UPDATE: PROTOTYPE VERSION IS COMPLETE

I WILL HENCEFORTH BE WORKING ON STITCH MY OWN VERSION OF THE RE-MADE PATTERN AS SEEN ABOVE

(also i need to borrow my old roommate's iron this thing is wrinkle city)
