being [redacted] must be so funny. you make a movie without a sequel in 2010, not part of any franchise, and you and the guy you shared 10 minutes of screen-time with get fanart and fics written about your characters even 12 years later. sometimes you reblog a gif of you and said co-star improvising a vaguely-fruity 3 line dialogue and watch a corner of the internet implode. And you love it

About the Great Betrayal of 1957......and why it was so impactful (besides the obvious) and the final nail in the coffin of their relationship......it isn't because Hawk caused a significant practical harm to Tim or lost him a job but because in that moment Tim realised that it didn't matter. Up until then, Tim must have thought on some level that their relationship was affected by Tim's principles. His inability to make peace with Hawks marriage. His unwillingness to constantly lie and put up a facade. Wanting a deeper connection than just sex. All of these things were boundaries he was constantly pushing for and what in his view, on some level made him lose in the end. He could have chosen to stay even after Hawk told him he was going to marry Lucy, but it was a deal-breaker for *him*.

So when he comes back in 1957 he aims to be chill, basically. He "has no expectations". He says "it's fine, I'll compromise on ALL these things that are super important to me. If it means Hawk will truly accept me." And it seems like for a while, it works. Hawk even indulges them a lot with attention and intimacy. He thinks he has figured out a way to make it work.

But that's the betrayal. Because Tim gave up everything. His faith. His principles. And it STILL didn't work. Because Hawk threw him out again. Cruelly and for no good reason. That was the betrayal. It wasn't about a job. Or government work. Hawk betrayed his *hope* that if he did exactly what Hawk wanted, if he simply compromises Hawk will hold up his end of the deal. But of course not.

Tim is never the same with Hawk after that. Why he calls it a "fantasy" because in 1957 hawk demonstrated that even in the best circumstances they could hope to have he would find a way to push him out. He understands, very clearly that Hawk is at his heart a self-saboteur and will get in his own way no matter how much he submits, how much he bends. He will not be chosen. And that is the ultimate tragedy.

I agree with 90% if this but I'm not sure if Tim would see that it was cruelty for cruelties sake. At first it would appear that way but as we see when he appears at the hospital apoplectic with rage, he sees baby Jackson and immediately understands why Hawk did it and accepts it.

Im in search of fics where Arthur and Eames are together for a while, then break up because one or booth dont think theyre really ready for a relationship/dont want one but theyre still hella in love and have to bear it each time they see each other until thEY FINALLY CRACK AND REALISE HOW MUCH THEY NEED EACH OTHER AND THERES A REALLY HOT MAKE-OUT SCENE AND THEY BOTH FEEL LIKE INSECURE FUCK-UPS BECAUSE THEY ARE BUT ITS PERFECT AND THEY LOVE EACH OTHER AND THEY GET BACK TOGETHER AND ITS PERFECT

You pretty much just completely described the exact plot of Lauand’s Cut-Out Cookies but + repressed!Arthur.

I recced it last night but protect this house really fits this.

this lonely house by tourdefierce fits this but with a “can’t quite get started” deal

i’d probably sandwich Merely Players by raitala into this, if “because one or both don’t think they’re really ready for a relationship” you mean “one of them sabotages the job they’re on and has to skedaddle.”

And by that guideline I should prolly throw The Rebel French onto the pile.

this happens in this fic by 10001cranes, but only for like a day :D

this describes both that one time in amsterdam by enjambament and the chav!verse by delires, except the breakup motivation in each is “we need to split up for our own safety,” and also kinda describes kiyala’s AU fusion The Devil Takes His Own except the breakup motivation is “we can’t be together because it would distract us from surviving the zombie apocalypse”

this describes Volta by weatherfront if by “really hot make-out scene” you mean “rescuing you from limbo over many many words”

There are lots of fics where this happens except the breakup motivation is “mal dies and arthur has to go be with cobb.” and an endless number of fics where they break up because they were never ~officially together~ to begin with, and fic that are combinations of both, like this is all there is, roll the dice by wanderlight, and if you want to try (there’s no worse you could do) by wadebrampton.

and then there are the combinations of “never officially together” and “angsty misunderstandings” like whatever the fuck is going on in this terrible heartbreaker by gunsandbutter ugh kill me

and then there are the ones where they break up in the professional sense, like, uh, in certain light by airgiodslv, and i guess, this one by me?

this is just really not a remotely comprehensive or complete list at all, i’m sorry /o\

So Alex is alive right? Being totally serious. It seemed like it.

I’ll preface this by saying that I honestly don’t think that Tom Rob Smith actually knows if he wants Alex alive or not (plot-wise) and so it’s being left so open ended for him, more-so than the audience. If he needs to have Alex be a alive for plot-reasons in the future, then he has left that door open. That’s the only reason this makes sense.

But yeah, I think he probably is alive.

Frances said, “oh this is a chance for us to start over” but…no? They don’t want Alex to have contact with anyone from his past life. That includes her. You think she would be smart enough to realize that, but she legit seems to think she could be in contact with him.

So, they stop her from going back into the room, and then they knock her out so that she can’t see anything. Frances never actually sees Alex die, and they put the heat on whoever’s body to make it decompose so it can’t be identified.

Afterwards they tell her that Alex was lying and do they decided to kill him since he wouldn’t be of use to them anymore (I don’t understand why this agency is so averse to killing people (namely Danny, secondly Frances) but they would kill Alex, who is actually useful) and she believes it.

It’s still open for Alex to be alive ~in America~, but I personally have never wanted a series two (and I don’t really know if it’ll get one) so it is what it is. I think that scene (which was amazing; Ed did amazing) was just about the only good one in the entire episode, yikes.

But honestly why didn’t they just kill Danny or Frances? Like?????? Too many things in this episode that weren’t talked about at all, and too much time spent on shit we already knew.

if it makes you feel any better, I feel exactly the same way about London Spy :\ it was just naff

Throughout the series I've had to suspend my disbelief and there were many times when the plot stretched and plot hole after plot hole cropped up but I stuck with it only for that ludicrous finale. Not only was it stupid, clunky and nonsensical it was also disturbing with that traumatic scene of Alex in the trunk.

London Spy : Episode 5

I'm so pissed off. All this build up and a cute blossoming fandom - which I hope flourishes because someone needs to fanwank away that ending.
I feel robbed and cheated and also quite disturbed that this was the end, not only of the show but yes, really of Alex and what an unnecessary and gruesome way to kill him off. Urgh.
So Scottie was a good guy, I don't know if it was poor direction or a weak script that meant we are dubious of his motives throughout. Why did he have to die though? I don't get why they didn't just kill Danny off (I know cos we wouldn't have a series) but I don't get what they wanted to achieve with Scottie's character and death.
I'm so upset at such a gruesome end to Alex. What a bonkers scene, like seriously what the fuck was that about?
Also, what the hell the last ten minutes? His biological mum went on a rampage and burnt down Alex's childhood maze then Danny decided to throw his lot in with Frances who ultimately murdered her son?!
I'm so incoherently angry about a damn TV show you guys.

On London Spy, Alex and Danny

Some thoughts about Alex’s alleged affair or infidelity:

I don’t think that Alex were ever with that prostitute. I think it was a lie. I know, there were flashbacks, but I think they show what Danny imagined happened, not what actually happened. This entire show is shown from Danny’s point of view. All scenes are with him, showing us what Danny experiences. That is the point of the show, to tell Danny’s story, if I understand Tom Rob Smith correctly. He said that he made it into a tv-show because he wanted to tell Danny’s story, from Danny’s point of view, it would be a first person narration, and that it would never make sense for Danny to write a book as he never would. The tv-show allows TRS to create the most realistic way of telling Danny’s story. So I think that all scenes either show us the world as Danny sees or imagines it. Those scenes with Scottie’s blue lover were not Scottie’s memories, they were how Danny imagined it had happened. And the same with Alex and the prostitute. He imagine how Alex would have reacted and looked like. Which also explains why Alex was so out of character and actually initiated the whole thing. The same Alex who ran from Danny first time the met, didn’t react until Danny had started to walk away the second time they met and the same Alex who waited a week until he showed up at 5 in the morning at Danny’s place. So no, I don’t believe that Alex had some random blowjob with some random dude he never saw again. Do people not remember how nervous he was? Not just about sex, but kisses, too. In the scene where the waiter spills something all over Alex, he seems so relaxed about stranger touching him. That doesn’t seem like Alex to me.

And no, I don’t blame Danny for believing the prostitute. I know he’s good at catching lies, but we can all be lied to and believe it. He’s not perfect. And the prostitute does know a lot of intimate details about Alex. (Even though that seems a bit weird that he knows/remembers so much about one blowjob several months ago.) But I’m pretty sure those details could be found out without actually giving Alex a blowjob. They did bug both apartments, so how he sounded during sex would not be that difficult to figure out. As for the birthmark, they probably had some surveillance footage or photos or something.

All in all, I don’t believe it. And I still believe that Alex’s alive. But that’s mainly because I can’t bear the thought of him being dead, not because I think he’s gonna show up in the last episode. Even though it would be epic if he did.

Yes, we see Alex's affair through Danny's eyes, remember in the police station when he was getting interrogated about being high and not unlocking the trunk? We saw Danny having vivid 'flashbacks' of that fake scene and for a second you believed that it could be true.

I think what matters, whether it's true or not, is that Danny forgives him. That whole stunt was designed to invalidate Danny's love and their relationship.

Kawaii! These little kitties aren’t just unbelievably cute, they’re also edible. They’re made by a Japanese mom named Caroline for Neko no Hi or Cat Day, which takes place each year on February 22nd.

Cat-shaped treats seem like a wonderful way to celebrate how much you like your feline friends. These treats are cat-shaped nerikiri, which is “a traditional Japanese sweet made by mixing shiro-an (sweetened white bean paste) with gyuhi (made of glutinous rice, similar to mochi but softer).” Caroline sculpts her nerikiri cats and kittens into various sizes and poses and then uses edible dyes to add distinguishing markings and fine details. She even makes little accessories for them, like tea sets and pillows for extra-comfy lounging.

Based on the effort that goes into making these sweets, it seems likely that Caroline’s family probably has at least one real life cat of their own and we’re guessing it leads a wonderfully spoiled life.

THOUGHTS THOUGHTS THOUGHTS

DANIEL EDWARD HOLT.

Gifs in a bit!

Anyway. Things that turned out to be true first, of course.

Now for thoughts about things going forward.

Avatar

you make great points under the cut but i just wanted to address a couple of them because it does seem that things are done differently in the UK… so it leaves us confused

-you mention “the government” being against danny. yes this could very well be true but it’s worth noting that in the united states, the CIA has undertaken operations without the knowledge of the president. they can do that, and they’re the only institution that can do that. completely covert. i don’t know if this is the same in the UK with MI6. probably though.

-if i’m not mistaken, the way the legal system works over there places the burden of proof on the defendant NOT on the prosecution… which is the opposite of how we do things in the US, theoretically speaking… and that’s terrifying. that’s why danny is completely stuck. the system is broken. the police have a story all made up and ready to go, and they’ve been assembling the “evidence” for months… it’s on danny to prove he didn’t kill alex… someone correct me if i’m wrong about this!

-”take the test in america danny” LOL (but seriously their healthcare system is government-run. it’s free. possible clue? there’s more interference from the bureaucracy there than there would be here in a for-profit private clinic… just a thought)

-this episode suggests alex really is dead… your thoughts? setting aside anything pre-planned by him, of course.

*Agree with most points but we’re supposed to be innocent until proven guilty here in the U.K.

*Private testing clinics would have been more likely to have been bribed into faking the test. Also there would be far fewer private testing places that Danny could have gone to whereas NHS clinics are in every suburb, how they would have narrowed it down to that one at that time with that nurse, nah can’t see it happening, so, unfortunately I don’t think they faked the test, that would stretch credibility far too much for me.
