Howard Payne’s monologue is rudely disrupted by a loud snort, erupting from the other side of the couch. Happy, who had been listening attentively to the film, kicked her foot into Toby’s hip. He shot up, nearly dropping the bowl of popcorn he cradled against his stomach.

“Happy, what was that for?” he groaned, lying back and shielding his eyes in the crook of his elbow.

“You were the one who wanted to watch this movie” Happy barked, tugging the blanket off Toby’s body and wrapping it around her own, “and your snoring is interrupting the best part of the movie.”

“I thought the bridge jump was the best part of the movie.”

“The whole movie is the best part of the movie” Happy interjected.

She heard him sigh and sit up, placing the bowl on the table in front of them and kicking his legs out to the end of the couch his head had just been occupying. Then she felt his arms tug at her waist, wrapping himself and the blanket around the both of them.

“Sorry” he mumbled, burying his face in her hair and placing a kiss to her scalp. “You’ll have to catch me up on what I missed.”

From there, Happy gave Toby a brief recap, and they both fell silent as the film continued.

Happy suddenly woke up, her body propelling forward with a force of shock from the dream she had been having. Toby, who was awake and had been smoothing a strand of her hair between his fingers, braced her shoulders as she rose.

He blinked, briefly startled by her emergence. “Hey Hap, you okay?” he asked, rubbing a reassuring hand over her arm.

She nodded, slowly declining till her head was once again laying against Toby’s chest.

“Bad dream?” he asked softly.

Her eyes flew up, giving him the best glare she could muster beneath her fleeting lids. “No, I did not just have a nightmare.” She was met by an amused smirk and raised eyebrows. She sent a budge to his ribcage in reply and settled in for another nap. “I just… realized how good it feels to be this close to you.”

She sounded so quiet and listless, and he almost completely missed her words, which seemed to take residence in his brain under “the neverending list of awesome things Happy has ever said”. “Happy, did you just-”

“Shut it, Doc” she barked sharply, despite the lull in her voice. A moment later, her soft snores were brushing over the lapel of Toby’s jacket, and his hands were once again brushing her soft hair off her shoulders.
