Though Tyson is never afraid to make a call when assigned a job by the Moriarty Mirrors, he is also one of the last to call for a full retreat.

He knows that many employees will hold off on calling a retreat at all, fearing the consequences of failing the Moriarty Mirrors, but no matter how servile Tyson maybe, when he is tasked with an assignment he will act to the best of his judgement and refuses to buckle from what he believes. It’s why he’s an asset to the Moriarty Mirrors in the first place.

Instead, Tyson’s lack of full retreats comes from his more cautious approach and meticulous planning. He will gladly pull out before being an offensive, replan, and approach once more a dozen times before committing if that is what is needed.

He also isn’t afraid to approach again when a temporary retreat is forced, rather than abandoning the job completely. Tyson is the furthest from reckless, but he knows how to use confusion and panic as weapons in his favour. Once a retreat is forced, few would expect the next assault to follow immediately.

Rather than letting the dust settle, Tyson uses it as cover.

Tyson’s Army!Verse home is […] large open spaces that flow from one to another, more distance from the city and full of natural light. It’s a home that suits Tyson when he’s recovering (Veteran AU/Chicago!Verse), where he needs more space (HDM AU), or where Sebastian needs Tyson under his thumb (Kitten!Verse). This is also the house that main!verse Tyson owned before he abandoned the army.
  1. Front Entrance
  2. Kitchen + Patio The patio runs down the length of the house then along the bottom too. In every verse it appears in, this patio is covered in cacti and slopes downwards very gradually to meet the lower ground of the back garden: slowly enough to avoid actively noticing it, yet steep enough to be an issue in winter.
  3. Closet This room is primarily used as a bedroom/playroom for Tyson’s pets.
  4. Closed living-room In Kitten!Verse, this is largely Sebastian’s space for when he wants privacy.
  5. Open living-room
  6. Meditation room In Kitten!Verse, this is largely where Tyson can be found; nestled amongst the blankets.
  7. Back entrance
  8. Main Bedroom
  9. Bathroom/Shower
  10. Study
  11. Spare Bedroom

Tyson is most naturally aligned with Earth, but how would Tyson manage with the other four elements?

Elemental AU: Book 3 (Air)

With fire in second and water in third, air is the element that Tyson would struggle with the most, and a simple exercise proves it:

Hold open your arms in a welcoming gesture, then throw your arms wide open, like an Airbender.
Now try and imagine Tyson completely exposing his front that way. Even welcoming back his brother after years away, Tyson’s arms would be closer to his body and no where near as open as a normal ‘welcoming gesture’.

Whilst Tyson would appreciate the move defensive and evasive nature of air, Tyson is ill-suited to its open positioning. He has the flexibility, in his tactics and physicality, to work with air, and yet it simply wouldn’t work for him. ‘And yet’ is a common theme when describing Tyson’s connection to air.

When it’s said that Tyson is Icarus that means he is made to try and fly, to reach for the sky, but to always fall back down to the ground. Broken, but not beaten. To climb in through your window, stay long enough to lick his wounds, then jumping out again. A constant cycle of falling and trying, and not ever flying.

Much like water, air is something that Tyson can admire and understand, but it’s not an element that Tyson could comfortably wield. He can understand the roaring rage in untamed winds and the delicate dancing of the breeze, he can feel the pang of longing in his chest for those things, but that simply isn’t who Tyson is at the end of the day.

Air is the element of freedom and spirituality, of endless horizons and lungs full of life. New begins and new hope. Tyson is perseverance and structure, of planting his feet and refusing to say die. Keeping to the status quo, and repeating the same mistakes over and over again with grim resolve.

The last person Tyson would have slept with would be Sebastian or Lex.

He isn’t fond of one night stands and whilst fooling around with Lex seems like the more likely last time, Tyson has been known to tumble into bed with Sebastian once more during temporary truces between the two of them.

Corruption!Verse and Redemption!Verse are the exceptions, where Tyson’s last time would be sharing the bed of Levi & Sienna McCullum. Naturally, Sienna was the one to suggest this and - as always - Levi & Tyson shared a shrug, then nodded along with her plan.
Whilst Tyson has shared their bed in every verse where he knows them, that has only ever been for sleep. Corruption/Redemption!Verse are the only places where Tyson is consistently confident and comfortable enough in himself that Sienna would feel comfortable propositioning him.

Beyond not trusting strangers enough to touch him, and his usual suspects consisting of someone who keeps trying to beat him into near death and someone who’s ego does not need any fluffing, Tyson tends not to have sex that often because he doesn’t feel as though the reward is worth the effort.

Tyson is more than happy to go along with whatever will bring his partner pleasure and he certainly enjoys sex, but he is prone to sensory overload after sex and his drop from climax is more often than not a harsh drop back to reality, which can end up overruling whatever pleasure he might have felt.

Across all of his verses, Tyson has an army of pets, but there are three that are his pets across most universes and regardless of whether the magical/advantaged technology level of Tyson’s main universe is active, and those are Lily, Bobby, & Jack.

Lily

The Dalmatian/Dhole hybrid has been with Tyson since Pakistan, where she began tailing him for food and eventually led him to water. At this point in time, she is nine years old.

Lily’s spots are black and her coat white, though most the time it looks more grey from rolling around outside. On her left thigh, there are only three spots that make a triangle like a bowling ball’s holes. She is normally wearing a brown leather collar and her leash is a black rope. Her dangling ID tag looks like this, the bell jingles as she walks and the information is inside.

She loathes water with a passion. When they first met, Lily was terrified of water; including the river she led him to for water. Since those days, Tyson has helped her calm down and taught her to swim, but she still hates taking a bath and she never wants to stay out in the rain. More often than not, Tyson will wash her in the en-suite’s walk-in shower instead.

Lily is one of two dogs to give Tyson serious scars. She is very protective of Tyson and will actively stand between him and anyone she doesn’t like. Lily is well-trained and will immediately fall back when given the command, but generally, Tyson trusts Lily’s judgement.

Lily loves playing with bubbles. Tyson can keep her entertained for hours by blowing bubbles for her to snap at and chase around. Whenever she actually manages to catch one, she spends a solid minute making a fuss, rubbing her tongue on the ground to remove the taste, before chasing them again.

Most often, Lily can be found perched on top of the armchair in Tyson’s living room, looking out the window onto London’s streets. At night, she does tend to join Tyson (and Bobby) in his bed, but usually, she prefers to curl up at the end of the bed to save a little space to herself whilst still being near.

Bobby

He is a Dalmatian/Dhole/Beagle. At this point in time, he is five years old.

Bobby has black spots. His floppy ears are completely black, which is the only distinctive part of his coat, as the rest of his spots are just spread about randomly. He was the runt of the litter, Lily’s litter, she gave birth thanks to a Magic!Anon. Bobby’s collar is a red fabric collar and his leash is a red rope. His dangling ID tag looks like this.

He hates having his belly rubbed. Bobby is perfectly fine with his chest being touched and the inside of his back legs, but he gets upset whenever his stomach is touched. Tyson has to be extra careful when drying him off. He isn’t aggressive when touched there, yet clearly distressed and wants to get away.

Bobby loves water, and swimming, and rain, and jumping in puddles, and… anything wet. When he was a smaller dog, Bobby used to swim laps in the bathtub. Whenever Tyson goes to take a shower, Bobby insists on jumping in to join him.

When Bobby was a puppy, he loved water just as much as he does now. He once ended up falling asleep in the bath whilst settled on Tyson’s chest. This left Tyson unable to move as the water cooled and Lily outside of the bath licking her puppy clean of soap, whilst being completely unwilling to get touched by the water herself.

Bobby can see ghosts and is able to seek them out. He will go out of his way to find ghosts, even taking Tyson miles off course. Though Tyson has his dogs trained to an incredible level, the former Lieutenant largely allows his dogs to do as they wish unless given a direct instruction. That training means he can trust them enough to allow such a loose metaphorical leash.

Unless Tyson is trying to get somewhere specific, when Bobby starts leading him and Lily off to the left on their morning walk, Tyson shrugs and follows the course Bobby would like the walk. He doesn’t understand what exactly is catching his Dalmatian’s interest, but he enjoys the opportunity to take a new route and see different areas of London when it happens.

Bobby loves people, but he tends to be unsure when initially meeting other dogs. After a minute and no negative reaction, Bobby will gladly play with other dogs, but he does need a moment to make sure everything is fine. No amount of time will ever convince Bobby that cats are anything other than malevolent.

Jack

Jack is a Doberman. At this point in time, he is eleven years old.

Jack was originally a dog that Tyson trained for the army, but when he refused to take orders from anyone other than Tyson he was deemed unfit for service. Tyson agreed to take him in without hesitation and now he guards the family manor under Jasmine’s care.

Most who meet the black Doberman would call him cold, but Jack is a one-man dog: Tyson’s dog. With Tyson and Lily, he is loyal and friendly. He is slightly more reserved with Jasmine - who he is in the care of, most of the time - and Bobby, but still loyal and protective of both. Jack, like Lily, doesn’t seek affection and is more comfortable with having company to lay next to.

Tyson has a tracker on Jack’s purple collar. It’s not that he distrusts Jasmine or her ability to care for his dog, but it soothes Tyson’s anxiety to be able to check in on Jack from time to time. Jack is one of the few constants from the time before he was forced to abandon the army.

Jack is largely impartial about water. Whilst he won’t care about walking out in the rain, he also won’t jump into the water; unless it’s a very hot day or ordered in by Tyson. Bath time has always been easy with Jack.

Jack’s favourite toy seems to be washed up seaweed. It’s like a tug-toy that he can destroy and rip up in minutes, and always have more to play with.

Whenever Tyson visits Cambridge, he makes sure to visit the manor and spent some time playing with Jack. If spare weren’t already at a premium in his apartment, Tyson would love to have Jack with him, but he knows the Doberman is better off with the space and grass of the manor.

Since he was twenty-three-years-old, Tyson has been cutting his own hair.

He began cutting his own hair during his relationship with Kim. Tyson mentioned to her that he always felt stressed whenever scissors or clippers were taken to his head, always fearing an attack, and Kimiko asked why he didn’t just cut it himself.

That question dumbstruck Tyson. He had never really considered it an option before. It took him a while to get used to doing it right, but these days, though he largely uses a mixture of scissors, thinning scissors, and clippers, Tyson can even cut his hair properly using only the straight razor he uses to shave.

At this point, it’s largely muscle memory as Tyson always cuts his hair at roughly the same time; before it’s noticeably any different from its usual puffy nature. As such, he isn’t great at having to cut anyone else’s hair, but he can do a decent job.

Though the other contents of Tyson’s rucksack will change regularly, there are a few constants to be found there:

  • His latest journal. - The notebook/journal has several poly-pockets to store any loose papers and almost always has a business card for Pup’s Pet Store inside.
  • Medicine box – Tyson got the medicine box while travelling across India with Sebastian. The content changes often but there is always a set of bandages, fabric gauze, rubbing alcohol, stitching thread, and PTSD suppressant medicine.
  • Two hunting knives - One has a silver edge for when he meets supernatural and the hollow handle has salt in it. The other has a serrated edge and a sharpening stone, piece of flint, and a fake stone with a GPS tracker in the handle. The bottom of this knife has a compass in it.
  • A teabag tin, used to stash away anything incriminating in a way that Tyson can hide away if he thinks he’ll get arrested to store safely away from the elements for later retrieval. There is a GPS tracker inside so that other agents of the web can retrieve it, if necessary.
  • And, inevitably, a few half-crushed dog treats.

Frequently, Tyson will be protecting his belongings from other pickpockets with a padlock and a crow plush from his nephew will frequently appear inside his bag.

Outside of the rucksack that Tyson carries around everywhere, the former Lieutenant always has a duffel packed as a go-bag. If he needs to uproot his life at a moment’s notice, Tyson can. He has everything he’ll need to survive and escape in that bag.

In other verses, the items in Tyson’s normal bag get changed a little:

  • DC UA: Here Tyson usually has a small laptop for his work as a professor, to back up his cover story whilst working for the web from his phone.
  • Hogwarts AU/Honey Badger AU: Tyson keeps almost everything he owns at Hogwarts within his rucksack to keep it safe.
  • Mythical!Verse: His tarot cards are a permanent fixture in Tyson’s rucksack in this verse and his grimoire joins his journal.
  • Pokémon AU: His rucksack has been combined with his go-bag, with a few extra additions to care for his Pokémon, as Tyson is almost always on the move in this verse.
  • Redemption!Verse: The crow plush is now a permanent fixture in his bag.
  • RWBY AU: Tyson’s weapon - Triumph - is attached to his bag in this verse, and he’s always carrying around dust and ammunition with him.
  • UA India: In addition to his normal phone, Tyson will always have a burner phone in his rucksack to contact Sebastian in emergencies.

Tyson is most naturally aligned with Earth, but how would Tyson manage with the other four elements?

Elemental AU: Book 2 (Fire)

Tyson’s phobia of fire is well-established, but he would do rather well with fire.

His pyrophobia is one of his oldest and deepest phobias, yet it is also the one that Tyson has the easiest time handling; fearing something has never prevented Tyson from loving it or flourishing with it. He is Icarus, after all.

His tendency to throw himself in the pyre aside, Tyson has fantastic self-control and discipline; near infinite patience. He has the focus to push past his fears to harness fire. In many ways, having control over fire would help dissuade his fears, which mostly rotate around the wild and uncontrollable nature of fire.

He favours defence over attack, but the best defence is a good offence and Tyson is an old hand at turning something intended for attack into a viable defensive strategy. Sometimes that strategy is clever and cunning, and at other times it’s as simple as no longer needing defence if the enemy is defeated.

It may not be his favourite technique, but Tyson knows the defensive potential of power yet to be unleashed; of having superior firepower. In a more physical sense, though it too applies to larger strategic thinking, Tyson knows how effective taking an attack stance can be at providing a defence. Defending by forcing the opponent to retreat into their own defensive position.

He is an opportunity attacker who would be well-suited to fire’s versatility of attack styles and the idea of unleashing a flurry of blows into an opening to inflict as much damage as possible once an opening presents itself - or using that onslaught to force an opening - is something that Tyson regularly utilises.

Tyson is destined to burn by flying too close to the sun - several times - yet until the day that arrogance finally finished him off, that experience gives him an intimate knowledge of fire. He knows the dangers of playing with fire, but he also knows how to toy with it; how to tease and dance away with minor singes.

And that’s fire, taking a surprising second place.

Good - Neutral - Evil
Tyson has a moral code that he follows but because his job means blindly serving others regardless of his own views Tyson has bent the needle on his moral compass enough that he can use other people’s compasses. Tyson’s morals change depending on who he is around.
Example: When around Moriarty murder is fine, everything is fine, so long as he remains loyal to Jim despite that he has described Jim as follows, “Some men follow their moral compass like a golden thread. Others let it sway with every step. Jim, well, he uses his moral compass as a yo-yo.”
Tyson’s behaviour and views change depending on who he is around, so when he is alone and following his own he keeps to his own views which are mostly moral and correct.
When he is following his own compass he tries to be good - he does his best to help people and make people happy at the cost of his own happiness - so he could never be evil but, even [especially] to his own mind, he has done far too much bad to ever be good.
Lawful - Neutral - Chaotic
Tyson has far too many [nervous/OCD/general] ticks and routines, is far too predictable, to be chaotic or neutral. He has created too much structure in his life to be anything but lawful. Even the way he chooses when to be good or bad is lawful, it is dictated by those he is around rather than chance or his own opinions.
But he is mentally unstable enough to almost be a neutral. He is just after the boarder. Over time as he becomes more and more derailed he may drift over to being a neutral, though it is highly unlikely that he could ever loose enough of his ticks and routines to go over to chaotic.

If he were ever to need a class, Tyson would be best suited to a Paladin-Rogue. He has a strong moral conviction and code that he follows, even if it doesn’t always seem that way, but he is also a habitual pickpocket and well-suited to the shadows.

Though certain songs are important to him, Tyson’s enjoyment of music is largely passive.

For the most part, he listens to a mixture of classical music and video games soundtracks simply to have background noise to keep himself from getting too caught up in his own head. When actually wanting to listen to music, Tyson’s preference generally ranges from blues to rock to punk and alternative.

If one were to look at the playlists saves on his phone or laptop, however, a very different picture would appear. Almost every playlist Tyson has it tailored around someone he spends time around, songs he knows that they’ll enjoy or to put them in a specific mindset.

There are the obvious ones - a playlist for babysitting James and one for hanging out with his brother, Jethro - and some less obvious choices, such as the purely K-Pop playlist for when he’s hanging out with Billy or the video game soundtrack remixes for when he’s working with Nate.

Tyson will transition between two different playlists for Lex, as he needs to calm or energise him for the job at hand, and two for Dick; starting with cathartic blues to transition into more cheerful songs to encourage him into a better mood.

Lusus Naturae | Pretty Mythical | Jim & Tyson

Dad joke,
k
From Jim ‘Savior of Spanish Literature’ Moriarty
Presumably he’d have the money for the ticket in order to actually attend in the costume by the time his attendance was ‘all but mandatory,’ so that was fully possible – given if he did, he’d likely have the money to afford a bedazzled flamingo mask as well.
He did have the time and effort, at least enough of it just for this, so after Jim had finished packing away all his notes on Delaney’s lecture he stayed. The bouquet was still on his mind, having found another one that morning especially piquing his concern. Hopefully translation would take his mind off things. Besides, staying there felt more comfortable then heading to his home that day. He was probably just being paranoid. Jim hopped up to his feet and padded over to Delaney’s desk. “I’ve gotten a bit better at keeping the allure in with my wings out.” Really not much, but he had been practicing. “Do you have any more lollipops? I think they’d work pretty well as ‘I’m proud of your accomplishments due to implementing the advice I gave you, so have a small something’ reward.”
The smile that followed that up was too-expectant and innocent to be genuine. He was relatively certain the lollipops had been a lie, probably a cover up for some sort of magic thing considering the glowing tattoos. Delaney didn’t really seem like the lollipop type, to be honest – probably why the class had been so amused about the whole thing.

With a lazy wave of his arm, the classroom sealed itself against interlopers and magical emanations once more. “And I’m sure you’ll be h-happy to prove that hard work rather than expecting m-me to take your word,” Tyson countered, flicking his wrist towards his desk then upwards. Obligingly, a blue lollipop - altogether the wrong shade to match the affliction of his tongue – freed itself to hover just out of reach above the young man.

It wasn’t Tyson first choice for confectionary but, while he didn’t have a particularly sweet tooth, he did struggle with low blood sugar every now and again. Besides which, he found sweets a useful motivation for students of any age. Though his stutter had returned now that he was addressing Jim in isolation rather than addressing an entire classroom, Tyson was clearly more relaxed than he’d been all lesson. He had been perched against his desk all that time, but now his posture was looser, less tightly wound.

Another gesture behind himself and the books, his research, and a small glass jar filled with metal filing obligingly marched themselves out of his office and up into an orderly line on Tyson’s desk. “How are you feeling today, Jim? Ready for some p-practice, experimentation, theory, or all of the a-above?”

Quadrumvirate Duumvirate | Mythical | Sanjit & Tyson

A calm reaction, even taking Sanjit’s own projected emotions into the equation. The man wasn’t uncomfortable with magical beasts, in that case, or perhaps just had an impressively tight control over his panic response. To give an explanation for the assumption Sanjit sent out, ‘Most travelers I have encountered this far into darkness have lost their way.’ The language switch was mirrored; while he defaulted to whatever was considered their native tongue, he was not so rude as to push it if the one he was talking to favored another.
His head did tilt, one ear up and one down in the stereotypical canine fashion that he had never seen reason to teach out of himself in this true form. The personification of the city was lost on him, Sanjit instead assuming that a woman had given a thorough tour of the area. At least until Tyson spoke again and then understanding snowed down lightly upon Sanjit and therefore on Tyson as well. ‘Ah, the nearby settlement.’ It seemed lovely indeed, from a safe and outside perspective. Sanjit had no particular desires to go see how nice it was up close, though.
‘I am no blessing.’ Sanjit casually sent as he softly persuaded the vole off his back and watched it scuttle off into the underbrush. ‘No more than she was or you are.’  Tyson was not the first human to respond to Sanjit’s presence with that type of worship-respect. While Sanjit couldn’t denounce it as a reasonable response to something unusual that you don’t want to offend, he had no use for it.
He stood, silently padding over closer to Tyson but not passing the thresh hold where his claws would make contact if he struck them out to attack to avoid giving Tyson ample reason to raise his guard. It was a symbolic gesture, with Sanjit’s claws being arguably the least effective offensive tool he had, but one he extended regardless. ‘You are unusual for a human. May I inquire as to your purpose here?’ It wasn’t his business, inherently, nor did he have any right to pass judgement on the answer but little wisps of curiosity glided out of him.

Tyson could only describe the sensation as being poleaxed. Hearing London called a settlement almost felt jarring enough to eject him into the astral plane. It did, at least, teaching him someone more about the potentially Scandinavian and certainly very blue possible bear. It would hardly be the only sentient creature repulsed by a city, but – as Hyde Park was encompassed on all side by London – Tyson was curious how much it knew about the world beyond the forest. Enough to be reasonably familiar with humans at any rate.

The language switch was curious; it wasn’t a coincidence, but purposeful choice to use his native tongue. Or perhaps, an instinctive response. Magic could be as much intent as intuition.  He was also curious about the vole, but it would match behaviour of some manner of forest guardian. “Well, if not a blessing, I am certainly a delight,” was out of Tyson’s mouth before he could even think to curb his tongue. “So surely y-you are as well.” Not his smoothest recovery, but it would suffice.

He had no reason to retreat. It was frankly more unnerving how certain he felt about that than watching the creature approach. He could feel Jack swirling defensively in his shadow, but he remained subsumed and Tyson focused his efforts into not accidentally shifting from his position. If he pre-emptively defended himself or flinched away, there was a chance he could lose a far more costly game than any physical harm that might have been done.

“My purpose here is the same as anywhere e-else, I seek knowledge. Hyde Park holds something of great interest if the h-hearsay is to be believed.” Tyson had been considering as he spoke. It was showing his hand a little, but the potential payoff would be well-worth it. “Something much better in my care, than m-mounted on a trophy hunter’s wall.” If this was a forest spirit, it was unlikely to look favourably on hunting.

“It must take a truly intelligent person to be able to use probabilities and such to determine one’s luck.” James mused. He had noticed the way Magpie’s good nature had plummeted. Some people were dealt awful hands in life and James wondered if Magpie’s injuries weren’t a continuing representation of his current luck. If so, James would do his best to ease some of the ache of it, for he knew very well what it felt like not to have luck on his side.
Luck had been a fickle friend for James as long as he could remember. There were many things he felt blessed for having and many things he wished had gone differently. Having a roof over his head, coin enough for food and hobbies, and the ability to work a skilled trade were all blessings that he counted daily. On the opposite end of things, the Wanders and memory loss tended to balance his situation out. No one would consider him a man with a Midas Touch.
“There’s a lot of mathematics in botany too.” He commented as the kettle began the first wisps of a whistle. Quickly he rose to his feet and fetched a mug along with one of his favorite teas- a lemon and lavender blend that was perfect for the end of a long and surprising day, “Though it has more to do with leaf counts and ratios and things like that. There’s a lot to tell about plants by the measurements in the way they grow. I do admit I’ve dabbled some into my own research, though there’s so much to learn it’s hard to pick just one subject!”

“It’s just logic, James. K-Knowledge and experience. At the simplest level, card counting is j-just memorisation, but imagine for a moment. Three h-hunters gather around a priced boar. Each w-with only one arrow left. The first hunter knows s-she’s the quickest draw, but would lose if it became a b-brawl. If she shoots the second, the third will shoot h-her, and vice versa. Her best option is to shoot b-between the pair, force them to take each other o-out.”

He shrugged. “All you have to do is figure out the optimal outcome, t-then work backwards to find the safest path. I-It doesn’t always work, life is messier than theory, b-but at least you can anticipate deviations and h-have a backup plan ready.” Tyson knew his understanding of mathematics was better than most, but it had never seemed remarkable to him. It felt so obvious, patterns and probabilities giving shape to predictable behaviours.

Tyson nodded his understanding, weary of the throb of pain and how heavy exhaustion had made righting himself afterwards. “Golden ratios and fractals, yes. The p-perfect spirals in sunflowers heads and plucking l-leaves or flower heads at regular intervals to make the r-remaining ones grow larger or simply healthier; reduced y-yield for higher quality.” He offered a looser smile towards James. “I imagine it’s much harder, having to wait f-for your research to grow to prove any particular theory. M-My interest would bounce around too.”

Tyson is most naturally aligned with Earth, but how would Tyson manage with the other four elements?

Elemental AU: Book I (Water)

Tyson loves water and he’s a great stamina swimmer, but Tyson doesn’t mesh with water as an element.

Water is the element of change and adaptability. Whilst it’s true that Tyson is incredibly adaptable, that is a combination of always having a backup plan for every backup plan and thinking quickly on his feet, rather than an agree-ability to change. Tyson is very resistant to change.

He will roll with the punches like an expert, but it is far more in Tyson’s nature to plant his feet and endure whatever is thrown at him than to change his form.

In combat, he does prefer to use his opponents’ strength against them, but the way Tyson utilises that it more direct - in using it to force an opening for him to exploit, taking advantage of a moment - rather than his primary fighting style.

As a fighter, Tyson wants to be darting in-and-out of the mid-to-close range. Defending until an opportunity opens, then doing as much damage as possible before waiting again. A largely reactionary style doesn’t suit him. He’s an opportunity fighter.

He has the self-control and discipline that water demands as well as the poise and patience, but Tyson simply does not work with the slower more graceful style of water. He is more comfortable planting his feet in one place between bursts of movement. Stop and start fighting, rather than flowing from one movement to the next.

Water is something that Tyson can admire and understand, but it’s not an element that Tyson could comfortably wield.

So, that’s water coming in third.

Avatar
Tyger Tyger, burning bright,  In the forests of the night;    What immortal hand or eye,      Could frame thy fearful symmetry? In what distant deeps or skies.  Burnt the fire of thine eyes?    On what wings dare he aspire?      What the hand, dare seize the fire?

Tyson is Icarus; and the Moriarty Mirrors, Moran, and Kim all work as his Apollo.

Our little Icarus would rather rip his own wings off, if it prevented them from getting clipped again or if he thought the cage door was closing. […] Tyson would rather fly free, and have the trust from someone else that he will always come back. That so long as the door remains open, Tyson will tumble in through the window instead.
He may, in fact, be completely incapable of stopping himself from showing off for a pretty face. […] If it will get him a second of the sun’s attention, our little Icarus will hurl himself off of cliffs - or, more accurately, rooftops - over and over again.
Our little Icarus knows that he’s going to burn himself up, and does it gladly, because - to him - it is entirely worth whatever pain may come to bask in the sun; whether that is The Colonel or the Moriarty Mirrors, Tyson will gladly take that leap of faith every time.
Tyson always knew that Kim would never be his to keep. […] It was fun. It was all just a game, and Tyson knew it would hurt like hell when it ended, but he treasures every precious moment with Kim. And he would do it all again.
The risk of burning up to bask in the warmth of the Moriarty Mirrors or The Colonel is a risk that Tyson will take every time without failure. Even in Tyson’s mind, it’s not a risk of burning up. He knows he will burn to make them happy, and Tyson is fine with that. He welcomes it with open arms. Our dear Icarus will not flinch from his fate.
…has a confusingly big heart and a kind disposition that cannot be changed so easily. […] He’d been burned again and again. And yet, Tyson still offered out his heart and compassion - his body and soul, for friendship and love, and even that old lady down the road with a barbed tongue and far too many shopping bags - not without caution, but a boneheaded determination to give until his confusingly big heart had nothing left to offer.
His instinct to survive is (almost) as strong Sebastian Moran’s to kill, and yet Tyson is the limping walking embodiment of Icarus; a role he openly embraces with ‘calculates risks’ that avoid ever taking unnecessary risks.
He is just too stubborn to die and though he struggles to motivate himself, Tyson simply doesn’t stop once he starts. He keeps going until he has nothing left to give. […] His talent for picking himself up, though admirable, would be entirely unnecessary if Tyson didn’t keep putting himself in situations that knock him to the floor.
…somewhere in his heart, he’d accepted that the odds were stacked against him; that this would be his undoing. […] but Tyson never stopped trying. He refused to stop pushing himself to make that next step, to live for another day. It doesn’t matter if Tyson thinks he can’t, he will. He will survive and fight to his last. […] Brave, stupid, Tyson. Too damn stubborn to die, marching forward and refusing to fail. After all, he has to live to see that new day. Tyson can’t throw his life away for someone else tomorrow if he lets himself die today.
“Icarus didn’t b-believe he’d fall. I knew I would, and did it a-anyway.” […] “That doesn’t sound wise to me, Sir,” Tyson countered, that devil-may-care smile unwavering. […] Despite his genuine pyrophobia, Tyson was but a moth to flame, and couldn’t that sum up his entire life? Tyson knew it was dangerous, knew it would hurt, and chased it anyway.

For all of Tyson’s humility and self-doubt in his own abilities, there is a level of hubris - of sheer, barefaced arrogance - in the way he plants his feet and say ‘I will burn to make this happen. Then I will do it again, and again, and again; until I have nothing left, and no one can stop me.’

Tyson took that leap of faith and survived it. He survived The Colonel. He licked his wounds. The story should have ended there. A lesson in hubris was learnt. Tyson’s heart, body, and mind were broken, but he lived to learn his own lesson rather than to be a cautionary tale.

Tyson took a different lesson from that. Not the usual, don’t fly too close to the sun, but rather: if you fly too close to the sun, you will be burn. You will hurt, and keep hurting forever, but you will survive and you caught the sun’s attention. For a brief moment, you shone together and made the sun happy, so go try again.

The arrogance to come limping back home, tail between his legs, and then to stare the sun in the face, haul his broken body up onto the roof, and jump again is intrinsically Tyson. He survived this once, he can survive it again. He survived The Colonel, he can survive the Moriarty Mirrors; probably.

And if he survives that attempt? Tyson will do it again.

But what if you die?
Then I die.

Tyson works himself to the bone. He is burning the candle at both ends, whilst trying to find a way to ignite the middle too; all whilst chastising himself for being too lazy, for not pushing himself harder.

All to prevent the Moriarty Mirrors from burning themselves out too soon by burning too brightly, Tyson throws himself wholeheartedly into trying to sustain them for a long as possible; no matter the emotional or physical toll on him. He taunts and stokes the fire of Moran’s anger to make sure Sebastian never loses that burning passion, because he would rather burn himself than watch Sebastian flicker away.

To Tyson, any sacrifice that he must make is worth it. He is confident in his ability to survive, to adapt and dust himself off afterwards, and he isn’t throwing his life away pointlessly. However, the knowledge that - eventually - it will kill him does not deter Tyson.

If it’s the next leap of faith or the leap two hundred attempts from now that will kill him, it does not matter. So long as Tyson knows that he gave it his all. That he never stopped trying to seize that fire, to cradle it to his chest and protect it, no matter how much it hurt to do so.

And the part that proves without a shadow of a doubt that Tyson is Icarus? He knows that he is. Tyson will gladly admit that. Not somberly resigned to an inescapable fate. No. He does not flinch from duty.

Tyson says ‘I am Icarus. I will gladly burn myself up to bask in the sun’ with a cavalier - devil-may-care - smile. Cocksure and arrogant. Proud in his inevitable demise. He welcomes this fate, openly embraces it. He is galvanised by it.

He leaps, and dares the world to do its worst. He is not afraid. He’s ready.
