ya’ll this cool new site lets you know if a certain movie or TV show has any affiliation with anyone who was accused of sexual assault. this is important for those of us who are passionate about not supporting work that associates itself with sexual abusers, for the sake of the victims.

I keep seeing this post making rounds so here’s my two cents.

Firstly, lest I get hate, which I probably will anyway, I am not condoning the actions of the accused. Sexual assault is capital B - Bad.

But this site does pose a question: Should an entire work be condemned because an individual who has done unsavory acts is somehow connected to it?

Perhaps the answer isn’t so black and white.

The example that comes to my mind is J*hn L*sseter’s involvement with Moana and more recently Coco. Moana is the role that gave Auli’i Cravalho wide recognition; it’s a role that will cement her career for years to come. It was an opportunity that few in Hollywood will ever get. Think about how special it was for Indiginous islanders to see a film in their own language, even though the Maori are a largely forgotten and persecuted people. Similar things can be said about Coco and the impact it’s had.

Hundreds of people contribute to the making of a film. Some are getting their first taste of success, some have spent years enjoying their job. Do these people deserve to have their work blacklisted?

I’m not saying you shouldn’t boycott. For example, I’ve heard (feel free to link because I could not) that L*sseter only signs off on Pixar movies these days and actually contributes very little. Should you condemn those movies? What about a movie written, directed, and starting W**dy All*n? What if that movie gave your fave their big break?Does that change things? Again it’s a choice you need to think about. Ask yourself if these films deserve your money and viewership. Sometimes the answer will be yes and sometimes it will be no. And that’s okay.

This site should be used to help you make a decision, not to make the decision for you.

and we all know how Moana is a groundbreaking concept and evidently had a positive significant global impact

I also think the website’s use of “one rotten apple spoils the barrel” is a false analogy when it comes to media since this saying is mostly linked to one person being a bad influence to everyone it comes in contact with so to call it “rotten apples” seems unfair when there are hundreds and thousands of staff who have worked their asses to create a film. Movies, music, and literature or any form of media can offer a good positive and important message to their audience despite them being problematic by association.

So I guess what we can take home from this is that it is best to be critical about the media we consume and see the bigger picture. You never know one of these days, one of those movies with a “fresh apples” rating could get “rotten apples” because an allegation pops up connected to a staff from the movie.

It is unfortunately not black and white. I think the best thing we can do to support the victims is to donate to organizations who help victims and boost their message. 

I also think the bigger problem lies in the industry itself where these corporations allow these offenders to still work under them. If they end up arrested and punished, then it’ll be a much better outcome than boycotting a good work that was unfortunately tainted by them.
