After two years of steadfast service to the ring, Anna finds herself haunted by both the daily horrors of the war, and the face of the one man she could never forget. Deciding to throw caution once more to the wind, Anna boards a boat for Scotland, relying only on the name of some distant far-off town whispered to her so many years ago.
The journey is long and arduous, the skies absent of the very stars that have filled her dreams since she abandoned the only life she’d ever known. When she finally reaches Scotland’s shores, she is struck by its beauty, and cannot help but imagine a young, bright-eyed boy with a makeshift telescope climbing the rocky hills. It is only when she at last finds a quaint grey homestead - only when she is knocking against the smooth varnish of the door - that she is thrust into a great fear. Will he forgive her? Could he trust her? Can she trust herself after years of deceit and spying and manipulation?
As the sound of approaching footsteps grows nearer, Anna fiddles with the one piece of jewelry on her possession, the one item that remained with her during the long seasons of military encampment. The engagement ring is a bit looser now, a bit scuffed at the edges, but it is still as beautiful as the day Edmund had slipped it onto her finger with shaking hands, whispering his joys by firelight even as Anna’s mind had been brimming with tactics and maneuvers.
Anna shakes her head at the memory, and holds her breath when the door creaks open in front of her. Edmund’s eyes - those deep, strange eyes that had once held so much love and trust and misguided hope - are still for just a moment, widening slightly as Anna stands a few inches away, terrified to speak. After several moments - too many to count, the air frozen in place between them - Edmund blinks and steps forward.
And keeps walking. Beyond the library and past Anna, out beyond the house and into the rustling green grass. The large main door hangs open behind his retreating form, and Anna observes the sunset of Scotland spilling golden at her feet. She thinks later that she called out to him, some variation of ‘Edmund’ or ‘ come back’ or ‘please,’ but she cannot be sure. It is only when she feels the rawness of her throat that night - like fire, like a burn secreted away beneath your skirts - that she is certain.
Hi all! This will be an ongoing AU series that will take us through Anna and Edmund’s relationship in Scotland. I’m not sure yet how many parts there will be. Hope you like it!

Caleb didn’t ask for this cat, she just kinda showed up. He did ask for this shitty job situation, I mean he could quit for the fifth time if he really had the guts. He didn’t ask for that incredibly attractive man to move in next door, he just kinda showed up too. He definitely asked for the trouble of falling in love with him, he thinks he can handle it. But Caleb didn’t ask what the man does for a living. And that was a mistake.
