Joyland is Hiring! We’re looking for a New York Editor, a Social Media Assistant, and an Editorial Assistant

Joyland Editor: New York

Joyland is looking for two new editors for its New York region to edit and solicit writing. The position is focused on editing and soliciting works of fiction (short story and novel excerpts), though there will be room to work on nonfiction, as well. Editors are encouraged to publish approximately 1-2 pieces per month. Editors will be sent a curated selection of stories by the submissions editor, and are expected to actively solicit stories and writers for Joyland as well. Like all Joyland positions, this is a remote, unpaid position open to those who live or have lived in New York. If you do live in New York, you will be invited to attend monthly staff meetings. This is a flexible position with a variable time commitment that can take about 3 to 5 hours per week.

POC, LGBTQIA+, and disabled people are very encouraged to apply!

To apply, please send us a brief biographical statement, a resume, and the answers to the following questions to joylandpublishers@gmail.com with the subject line: Joyland Editor Application.

1. What is a published short story or essay that you would have loved to edit?

2. Send us a short story or essay you have edited in the past. Please send 3-5 sentences about why you accepted this piece and what the experience was like.

3. What is a story that you would love to see represented on Joyland? You can name specific writers you would solicit if you were editing for Joyland or describe a genre or perspective you would be interested in working on.

4. Who are some writers that you admire? What was your favorite recently-read book?

Both of the below assistant positions can be done remotely. If you do live in New York, you will be invited to attend monthly staff meetings. Like all Joyland positions, the Editorial Assistant and the Social Media Assistant  positions are volunteer based. This is not a typical assistant position in the sense that you will be working 9 to 5 five days a week. Instead, you will work remotely for a few hours a week. Both positions will start ASAP and extend through December, with the possibility of further renewal.

POC, LGBTQIA+, and disabled people are very encouraged to apply!

Social Media Assistant

Responsibilities include posting Joyland essays and stories to Joyland’s Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts; creating graphic images for Instagram; selecting quotes from Joyland stories and essays to share on social media; and handling other relevant content on social media, including creating Joyland events, sharing Joyland news, and sharing news regarding works by and events for Joyland contributors/Joyland editors.  Social Media Assistants must be familiar with Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Familiarity with Hootsuite a major plus. This job will require you to read the nine stories and essays published on Joyland each month, often before publication.

Please send a cover letter, resume, and links to your personal social media accounts to joylandfiction@gmail.com. Please include “Summer 2018 Social Media Assistant” in your subject line.

Editorial Assistant

We are looking for an editorial assistant to work closely with our Managing Editor and Publisher. Responsibilities of the editorial assistant include helping to manage Joyland’s Submittable account, composing a new newsletter, working to organize Joyland’s archives, helping to organize Joyland’s annual print issue, and other administrative/editorial duties as needed. Familiarity with MailChimp and Submittable a plus.

Please send a cover letter and resume to joylandfiction@gmail.com. Please include “Summer 2018 Editorial Assistant” in your subject line.
