all the gory details

@thegorydetails / thegorydetails.tumblr.com

We had our son in July 2010 and our daughter in September 2012. This is where I am documenting all the gory details related to the adventure; pregnancy and beyond. And some other non-related stuff. I have another, more private blog that allows more...

Me, 10 hours ago: Abby, we should get your bangs trimmed after school today.
Abby, at dinner: Uummmm....weren't we going to get my bangs trimmed today?
Me: Oh! I forgot!
Abby: Ughh, I was talking about it all day!
Me: We can do it tomorrow. Will you remind me in the morning?
Abby: No. I can't.

To remember

I got up with the kids and made breakfast, the kids finished and disappeared. I came upstairs to shower and found them snuggles in bed with Jimmy and the dog. Who could resist? I climbed back into bed for some snuggles. Abby said, “We’re all happy!”

And we are. The fog and frustrations of baby and toddlerhood are behind us. That’s not to say we don’t have challenges. But the kids are so fun and enjoyable right now. They play together, and make each other giggle nonstop. We’re all happy.

The kids started cross country ski lessons today. It was raining and pretty miserable. We were all wearing down coats, not waterproof shells and ended up soaking wet. Luke threw in the towel halfway through and sat in the car, wearing one of my fleeces and half inside a sleeping bag. Abby, though, stuck with it and had a great time (proving wrong my prediction that she wouldn’t participate and would be a pain).

Hoping next weekend the weather is better… we’ve gotten a ton of snow this year so we need to enjoy it!

2016 Bucket List*

  • Capitol Reef NP
  • Canyonlands NP
  • Girls’ weekend
  • Cross country ski
  • Fly fish
  • Oregon Coast
  • More float trips
  • New house (convince Jimmy)
  • Buy less STUFF that we don’t really need (new house excluded)
  • Remember that traveling and camping with kids is challenging and I need to lower my expectations and be OK with everything not going as I had planned

*because I’m not one for resolutions but I have things I want to do this year and I like making bulleted lists.

Technically, I have a couple days to keep working but let's tally up.

  • Capitol Reef, check. We went over Memorial Day weekend and did some off the beaten path hikes and barely saw a soul. And the visitors center sells mini pies and pickled green beans. We immediately started looking for property in the area (*that* will stay on the bucket list for a while).
  • Canyonlands NP. We had a trip planned but a late spring snowstorm scared us off. Maybe next year! Or maybe we’ll focus on the newly designated Bears Ears National Monument (thanks, Obama!)
  • Girls' Weekend. Yes. Amazing. Will do again. It was with a different group of women than I had originally thought I’d be doing a girls’ trip with, which meant I got to meet a bunch of tumblr friends!
  • Cross country ski. Went a few times in Jan-Feb, bought my own gear in July, have gone a couple of times this winter, including today, where we introduced the kids to it.
  • Fly fish. I went once, while camping in SE Idaho. Keeping on the list.
  • Read more. I read more, mostly because I was traveling for work, which was lame. But I'm trying! (Currently reading "Hillbilly Elegy")
  • Oregon Coast turned into Mexico coast. Had a great time (heat exhaustion, sting rays stings, roof falls, and puking aside) in Sayulita.
  • We only got in one float trip. But wind aside, it was a blast.
  • New house. I convinced Jimmy! Hoping to list ours in the spring!
  • Totally failed at buying less stuff but was better about purging old stuff.
  • And finally, lowering expectations. I think I was better but the kids were also better. They are so fun and traveling and adventuring with them has hit a real turning point. We spent a week in Mexico and it was so good. All of our more local trips were fun and stress-free. Car rides are a breeze. I'd like to take the credit for improving my attitude but really, they have drastically matured and made life easier.

Overall, 2016 was a really fun, great year for our family. Here's to 2017!
