We have the opportunity to partner up with Rubik’s Cube and customize our own cube. I was thinking of naming it the Cube of Pride. Do we take on this project, fellow Pride Knights? Yes or no?

How is this?

THIS IS THE COOLEST THING EVER

But what if we make… two cubes?!

The way they don't process how the immediate influx of cash can, if used right, lead to getting the book, or having the credit score, or even having an actual meeting with a celebrity (since he's also a businessman) is always gonna stab my brain the wrong way

Capitalism is a hell of a drug.

You're not "built different" because you think "hustling" for every measley little dollar is better than having a life where you can actually do what you want without fear of starvation, you've been brainwashed.

A simple reminder you are free to unfollow me/block me if you feel like my presence on your dashboard is bothering you.

I promise I won't call you out for that, I won't make vague posts about it or pop in your DMs to ask you why.

You are free to curate your experience and if my presence muddles your experience, please unfollow/block me without fear. I promise I won't come after you.

I would like to also participate in this simple reminder. I do not look who follows or unfollows me and I don’t take it personally if someone unfollows. I follow and unfollow people all the time, it’s how I adjust my feed. That’s what the method is for.

crime shows are like “this character is being obnoxious and causing problems by not letting police enter somewhere without a warrant, you know, like what the law says” and everyone just lets them

crime shows are like “this cop only feels bad about murdering a suspect after discovering that they were actually innocent, implying that the murder would have been okay if the person had really been guilty” and everyone just lets them

Avatar

Crime shows are like “this suspect asks for a lawyer (making them seem guilty) after being harassed and beaten by the police but oh wait plot twist OF COURSE they were the criminal the whole time which makes it all okay actually” and everyone just lets them

LITERALLY and then crime shows are like “asking for a lawyer or demanding police come back with a warrant is an obvious sign of guilt instead of yknow just being your basic rights as a person” and then everyone just Believes them

Hold on now! SOMETIMES the person demanding a fair legal process does turn out to be innocent and then we get to see the cops bitch and moan about how the ignorant fool wasted precious investigative time by demanding fair legal process and sometimes because the BUFFOON made them get a WARRANT for NO REASON, the REAL MURDLER got away with ANOTHER MURDLE!!!!!

Disney's writer wage-theft is far worse than reported

Back in November, we learned that Disney had pulled a breathtakingly criminal wage-theft manuever on one of science-fiction’s most beloved authors, Allan Dean Foster, an elderly cancer-patient caring for his sick wife.

Foster is the bestselling author of some of the most successful movie novelizations ever, from the first STAR WARS novel to ALIENS novels and more. Thanks to Disney’s monopolistic buying spree of companies like Lucas and Fox, they now owned the movies and Foster’s contract.

Here’s where things get criminally weird. Disney argued that when they bought out Lucas, Fox, etc, they acquired their assets, but not their liabilities. In other words, they’d acquired the right to sell Foster’s work, but not the obligation to pay him when they did.

This is not how copyright contracts work, period. If it were, then any publisher with a runaway bestseller novel could incorporate a new company, sell its assets - but not its liabilities - to that company, and stiff the writer.

Both Foster’s agent and the Science Fiction Writers of America tried to negotiate with Disney quietly on this, but they were stonewalled and insulted (Disney insisted that they wouldn’t even *discuss* a deal without first getting nondisclosure agreements from Foster, another unheard-of tactic).

After failing to make progress with private negotiations, they went loudly public, launching the #DisneyMustPay campaign. The good news is, the campaign was successful, and Foster has been paid.

The bad news is that the campaign flushed out *many* writers who are also having their wages stolen by Disney. The company is stalling them, too - refusing to search its records or volunteer info unless the authors can name the specific instances in which they’ve been robbed.

In response, SFWA has joined forces with the Romance Writers of America, the Horror Writers of America, the National Writers Union, Sisters in Crime and the Authors Guild to form a coalition called Writers Must Be Paid.

They have a form where writers who suspect that Disney has stolen their wages can report it, anonymously:

There’s a reason for the anonymity: Disney’s anticompetitive mergers (culminating with the destructive Fox merger) has created a monopoly with vast market-power to destroy creators’ livelihoods by excluding them for speaking out.

The coalition has five modest demands for Disney:

I. Honor contracts now held by Disney and its subsidiaries

II. Provide royalty payments and statements to all affected authors

III. Update their licensing page with an FAQ for writers about how to handle missing royalties

IV. Create a clear, easy-to-find contact person or point for affected authors.

V. Cooperate with author organizations who are providing support to authors and agents.

More broadly, I hope this brings more creative workers into the discussion about competition.

Specifically, “monopsony,” the excessive buying power that happens when a companies dominate access to a market, which allows them to squeeze their suppliers, especially workers.

FUCK DISNEY.

Oh I get to say this now:

Speaking as a card carrying member of the Horror Writers Association, Disney can come here and suck my entire hog

"It’s often unhealthy to hyper-analyze your sexuality to the point where how you experience it changes where you belong. This is why the idea that broader terms are somehow more restrictive is baffling. Continuously breaking labels down and creating terminology for each facet of one’s identity shrinks communities until it’s just one person convinced that they’re the only one who relates to their experiences. It isolates people and ignores the importance of individuality within a collective identity."

the last time i went to pride a few years ago i brought one of these things and filled it to the brim with vodka and i was too busy sharing hits off the secret vodka bag with every stranger who wanted to partake to care about anything else. it became a whole bartering system where people gave me pins or lei's or other trinkets to gain a spot in line for the secret vodka camel bag. didn't matter what they looked like or how much clothes they wore, drag queens and leather kings and all the other ruffians got a hit from the camel bag if they had something to share, even if all they had was themselves. it was fucking disgusting. nobody had to bend down or anything because the straw was several feet long. moral of the story is at the end of the day... coexist.

the essence of pride but the soup is secret camel bag vodka

tricky words I always see misspelled in fics: a guide

  • Viscous/viciousViscous is generally used to describe the consistency of blood or other thick liquids. Vicious is used to describe something or someone who is violent.
  • Piqued/Peaked/Peeked – To pique someone’s interest is to catch or tease their attention. When something peaks, it reaches its total height or intensity. To peek (at) something is to look briefly, or glance.
  • Discrete/Discreet – this is a tough one. Discrete means to be separate, or distinct, i.e., two discrete theories. Conversely, when someone is discreet, they are being secretive or cautious to avoid attention.
  • Segue/Segway – one is a transition between things, the other is a thing you can ride at the park and definitely fall off of.
  • Conscious/Conscience/Conscientious – to be conscious is to be awake, i.e., not unconscious, or to be aware of something. Your conscience is the little voice in your head telling you not to eat the entire pint of ice cream. Finally, to be conscientious is to be good, to do things thoroughly, to be ruled by an inner moral code.

Hope this helped! Please add more if you think of them!

Phase/faze: A phase is a temporary state, usually in a known progression, as in My daughter is going through the phase where she puts everything in her mouth.  (Or one of a number of defined states, as in Ice is the solid phase of water.) If you’re writing certain genres, it’s also what people do to walk through walls.  Faze is to confuse or disorient someone: The blow to the head didn’t faze him.

Rain/Rein/Reign: Rain is water that falls from the sky.  Rein is the thing you use to control a horse, or metaphorically to rein in something you don’t want to have happen.  Reign is the length of time a monarch is in power, e.g. Queen Elizabeth II’s reign began in 1952.

Navel/Naval: Navel is a bellybutton.  Naval is something pertaining to ships.

Flaunt/Flout: Flaunting is making a point of being obvious about something: He flaunted his detailed knowledge of the X-MenFlout is to defy a rule or expectation: He flouted the ethical guidelines.

Taut/Taunt: Taut is being tight as a result of being pulled on, like a bowstring or a tarp that’s tied around the edges.  Taunting is making fun of someone.

Alter/Altar: To alter is to change.  An altar is the thing at the front of a worship service.

some more :)

Affect/Effect: Affect is a verb, meaning to make a difference. Effect is a noun; the difference being made, or in some cases, a verb meaning to cause to bring about.

Eminent/Imminent: both adjectives. Eminent means powerful, important, successful, well-known, and respected. Imminent means happening very soon.

Elicit/Illicit: Elicit is a verb meaning to evoke or draw out - ex.; something elicited a reply. Or maybe “They were unable to elicit information from him.” Illicit, on the other hand, is a noun with this definition: forbidden by laws, rules, or custom. For instance, one could speak of illicit drug$.

Breath/Breathe: breath is the noun, and breathe is the verb.
