@woodlxndguard It wasn't often that Thranduil took two apprentices at the same time. Larist was halfway through her apprenticeship and was shaping wonderfully into any number of beasts without any lasting affects. He never saw her bare fang or sport feather and talon once she drifted back into her elven state. It was with an unnatural grace. It was just as well- she was from the Oske-Opanv tribe and the Rain Dancers were known for the swift grace amongst everything they did within the forest.

Never had he met a mage from their clan before and he wasn't disappointed in their first offering. He just hoped prideful Larist would accept this new little one into their family.

Meludir, the little clanless one.

He did not imagine the Fuswv Hoporrene would have any issue with him adopting this little one into their clan. His mages always worked with the scouts as their second pair of eyes. They would be gladdened to have a little one with magic under their belt.

Legolas rounded the corner and entered the room, interrupting Thranduil's thoughts. “Father, Galion says Meludir's room has been furnished. He also has Larist' old books put in there since she doesn't need to study anymore.”

“Oh?” Thranduil asked, quirking his eyebrow. “Did she consent?”

Legolas shrugged, “I don't think she will notice that they have gone missing to be honest. She had them shoved in the back of her linen closet, forgotten and covered in dust.”

Thranduil tried no to wince- paper was expensive and it had taken his dissections along with a hired field artist decades to finish the grand book. “Well thank you for saving it from her clutches. Had I known that she felt so negatively about it-” He made a soft tutting sound. “Never mind. Would you have Meludir sent to the classroom? I will prepare the ceremony for him.”

The scout simply nodded, his braids bouncing on his shoulder as he did so. “Very well. Half an hour, Ada.”

                                                                                      “Half an hour, Towessece.”

The little Maia suspected the wolf wouldn’t come to him like a trained hound would, but he still politely held out his hand for it to sniff anyway. He wasn’t disappointed when his lightly curled fingers were ignored, but the wolf disregarded the rest of him as well, seemingly more interested in looking over the meager bones of his forge as if he were not there at all.

Was this normal wolf behavior? Mairon withdrew his hand, feeling the hairs at the base of his neck start to prickle. He almost missed his hammer, but at the same time he suddenly felt very glad he’d made himself as non-threatening as possible as his guest sat in the middle of the forge floor.

He gave a panicked cry, toppling backwards as the wolf cracked and morphed into the shape of an elf. Mairon was no stranger to beings who could alter their form at will; he’d been one of them, once. But that ability meant someone powerful had paid him a visit, someone whose presence had a casual demand of respect, and whose voice carried a sense of authority. Not to mention the claws.

Of course that was based off what little Mairon could see while trying to avert his eye.

“Y-you’re ah. Um. D-do you want–” he squeaked, fumbling blindly with his scarf until it was freed from his neck and offered hastily to the stranger. It left the scars on his neck out in the open, but it was worth it if it meant he did not have to face a completely unclad person. He could feel his face burning furiously enough as it was. “…Documents? I- I didn’t know- I thought I wouldn’t interfere with your laws if I built outside the border. …Am I in trouble…?”

The king did not wear the scarf handed to him. He could smell the discomfort coming from the creature in waves but he did not put two and two together. Instead his mind matched it with the shift over all and he pooled the scarf into his lap, studding the weave and letting his claws catch on the threads to test their strength.

“Nay, you are not in trouble as of yet.” He answered, looking up from the fabric in his grasp. “I figured from talk that you were a foreigner. You reside outside my border, its true- you have no reason to pay me allegiance nor are you bound my the rules of my kingdom. However you are trading with my folk and I would like you to come and document yourself.”

He tipped his head and set the scarf aside in the grass so that he could lean forward, elbows resting against his bare thighs. “Our trade partners must sign a document of renewed interest every ten years and must write their interests and personal information down for us. There must also be an invoice of all trade made with our kingdom once a year. It allows us to make sure that none were short handed and all debts are clear.”

He lifted his gaze to the crude forge and lifted his fingers to slowly work at braiding his hair into one long rope. “Though no tax shall be placed upon you. The people of my kingdom are coming to you to trade- I must warn you if you enter my kingdom seeking patrons however, that there will be a merchant’s tax. If you wish to hunt, even within the border of my kingdoms, you must purchase a pass as well.”

Laughing at Thranduil’s attitude, she followed, giving the lupine plenty of room to be a brat. Instead she hung back a few paces. She was often surprised at how playful her king could be. Not that it was a private, or new occurrence. The elleth simply had been so caught up in idolizing him as a child that she had not seen it. Strange how such things happened.

Fur raised slightly at her laughter but the beast king showed little other response as he walked stiffly to the family quarters. He simply looked at the guards posted outside the doors and the two redheads opened the heavy oaken door with a small smirk at Tauriel.

“Dog bathing duty, Captain?” Canwest jeered and his twin gave a huff, signing for him to be quiet. Thranduil echoed that huff and walked past, ignoring his guards immaturity for now. Canwest snorted and gestured for Tauriel to pass before giving his brother a sulking look. Liwest’s own glance was quite apologetic as he gave the elleth a small smile.

There was only time enough for Rossiel to remember to catch a breath before they hit the water, and she coughed and spluttered between her giggles upon coming back up.  “F-for the time being.”  After all, treading the water took the greatest portion of her concentration, and there was none to spare for making jokes, or much of anything else.
There would be time later to think about things like whether she had a dry shift to change into, and how heavily the halls were going to smell of wet dog.

Thranduil made a face as the hounds followed in, the air filled with the sound of splashing and immediately permeated with the musk of wet fur. Peasant. He really only had himself to blame for that though- he was showing his pack bad behavior.

They splashed around him though most stayed in the shallows on the bank where they could still stand properly and supervise the pups who were still clumsy in their endeavors. Thranduil was not clumsy however and swam with all the grace of an elf who had spent centuries fishing on the coast.

“If you are at least temporarily cured I suppose it was worth the venture,” he replied, amusement still warming his voice.

Maeglin resisted groaning, and internally chided himself for his choice of words and how he approached the situation. But it was too late now. After little more than a wince once he realized where Thranduil was headed, Maeglin put his hands just above the  ridge of his hips and turned to face Thranduil again.

“I would assume that to mean that I will be going into the forest accompanied. And that you would have me do something for you.” The smell of the opium faded a little, and as though it was a farewell to it he breathed in a little deeper to savor the last of it. “I suppose… a day in the forest with someone is wiser than going alone.” Maeglin had never tried telling Thranduil ‘No’ but he imagined it would make for an awkward conversation. Tomorrow, he would have to be more assertive.

“Have you counted how many days it has been since you were outside, then? And you have to ride along with someone else before you leave your room?”It was his turn to crack part a smile and inject a sort of teasing humor in his voice.

The chief’s golden gaze was sharp but friendly, the mock of irritation. His fingers felt his braids to make sure they were all holding before he stepped away from his desk towards the other elf. “I was outside just the night before, pup.” He jeered with a smile of his own. “And it is none of your business who I went riding with. Perhaps if you were more observant you would know.”

He smirked as he tapped Maeglin’s shoulder before turning and leading him out. “Come along. I will accompany you today but tomorrow I expect you to remember the path. You will keep a journal and hunt for three weeks until you know the animals well enough to construct them entirely from memory- muscle, nerve, and bone.”

Thranduil looked over his shoulder, smile radiant. “But today- today is for fun.”

In the moment that he was pinned Legolas had, at first, resisted; though he was a warrior no longer his body retained the strength of his centuries of fighting. His body tensed at the impact of being thrown to the ground, and he grabbed the hand at his throat with his own, eyes wide with confusion, but not fear. He thought–no, he knew–that Thranduil would not hurt him. No matter what lay between them, no matter how long they had been apart, nothing could make either of them hurt the other.
After a few moments, he stopped his resistance, form relaxing enough but not to the point of being fully complacent. His hand remained on the one, shaking at his neck, and his face softened into something kind. Though this was, indeed, not the most comfortable of meetings, Legolas could not deny that he loved Thranduil, and had missed him greatly. There was something warm and caring in his chest, and he felt a familiarity that he had lacked for many years. His voice was soft as he spoke.
“I make a mockery of no one,” he said. “Open your eyes, and do not let yourself be deceived by dreams or spells. Open your eyes and look at me.”
He slowly moved his hand away from Thranduil’s, in a small gesture of trust. He did not need to hold a hand away that would not hurt him. He did not need to hold away a hand that belonged to his father, and his king.
“Look at me,” he repeated, calm still. “Look at me. It is me. It is Las–your Las. Your son. Open your eyes past these foul tricks and see me.”

Why wasn't he fighting? The body beneath him remained solid and tense- not slipping away as smoke or shimmering light. Not bursting into a cloud of fireflies or swarming butterflies. In remained and ever so swiftly it relaxed. The hand slipped away, the throat simply offered in a manner of trust.

Was this a game or? He shuddered as the elf spoke, thighs quivering from where he was perched. He wanted to run now, wanted to flee until the gardens turned his fea in circles. “Towessece,” he murmured, voice soft while his hands trembled. It was a nickname pressed lovingly from his mother language. Rough fingertips moved from the ellon's neck to cup his face and Thranduil hunched over him, pressing his forehead against Legolas' face. "Vmeppuce...? Estomen...? Cestome kerretv?"

He was dizzy with wonder when he sat up, eyes almost fever bright.

Then he moved away, rising to stand a few steps apart. His white deer skin skirt hung low and brushed against his ankles as he looked at Legolas then looked away towards the gentle garden. He was silent for awhile, not enough kindness left within his reserves to offer a hand. Instead he looked weary and almost resigned as he tapped clawed fingertips against his leg and stared off. When he finally spoke, his voice was rough and tired.

“Did they fetch you? Have they exhausted their tricks so much that they                               must use my own child against me?”

She grinned wide in joy, and relief, at his affections. While she couldn’t know the exact thoughts that went through his mind at that moment, he seemed to appreciate the gift, and that was well and good enough for the time being. Petting at his head and snout, Tauriel placed a kiss to the hard plate on the top of his head.

“Would you like me to run you a bath? You look tired, mellon âr.”

The wolf pressed his head into her hands for a moment before flinching back at the kiss. There was no visual discomfort past a second look of shock- the sound startling him instead of the action. He darted forward to give her a small look before taking a few steps away to scratch at his ear.

He didn’t respond to her question and instead headed back out into the halls and then towards the family wing, tail lax and gait languid with exhaustion. A bath did sound quite nice but making Tauriel run to the kitchens to carry heated water all the way back was unnecessary- cold water would do.
